After briefly reassuring Ali and Lena, Lin Mo made his way to the City Lord’s Mansion.

The guards at the entrance to the City Lord’s Mansion were the same old faces. Though it was just a gatekeeping job, working the gate at the City Lord’s Mansion was considered a pretty good gig.

"Looks like you’ve put on a little weight recently?"

Lin Mo knew these guards fairly well, so he greeted them with a joke.

"Haha... I just took a new wife, and she’s a great cook, so I’ve been eating a bit more lately... Don’t worry, sir, I’ll lose the weight soon. I won’t tarnish the image of the City Lord’s Mansion."

The guard scratched his head, looking a little sheepish.

Lin Mo patted his shoulder, not wanting to say anything more.

After all, these things were none of Lin Mo’s business. A joke was just a joke; it was up to the guard to decide what to do. It wasn’t like Lin Mo’s opinion held any weight.

After a few more words, he walked into the mansion.

The guards watched him go, their eyes filled with envy.

"Must be nice... To be so highly regarded by the Lord City Lord. He can come and go from a place like the City Lord’s Mansion as he pleases."

"Forget the City Lord’s Mansion. What about Miss Feney’s room...?"

"AHEM—"

The head guard coughed twice as a warning. "Don’t spread rumors about things that aren’t set in stone."

But deep down, he knew it was pretty much a done deal.

They weren’t idiots. Anyone could see the special treatment Miss Feney and the Lord City Lord gave him. This was especially true for Miss Feney. A few of the veteran guards had practically watched her grow up. Seeing her expressions, hearing her tone, and watching how she acted around him—who would believe she didn’t have feelings for the man?

Miss Feney liked him, and Lady Beixila didn’t object. Wasn’t that as good as set in stone...?

And hadn’t they seen how that mysterious Miss Shefilya treated him differently, too?

Now it was just a matter of when they would make it official and start talking about marriage.

"Well, you have to admit the guy’s got talent and ability. Otherwise, Miss Feney and her mother wouldn’t have taken a shine to him. Have you seen his recent battle record? Is that something a normal person could pull off?"

"It’s true. He’s not just powerful, he’s also handsome. He’s got the looks and the skills to back them up. A guy like that is destined for great things."

...

Lin Mo didn’t hear the guards’ discussion. Having been to the City Lord’s Mansion a few times, he was more or less familiar with the layout. He didn’t go to Feney’s room, but headed straight for Shefilya’s courtyard.

As expected, Shefilya was sitting in the courtyard’s pavilion, a teacup in hand, leisurely sipping her tea.

"Where’s Feney? Did she go to the Church?"

Lin Mo sat down opposite her quite naturally.

Shefilya nodded. "The young miss went over to the Church first thing this morning. She successfully broke through to Level Two yesterday."

Clearly, she knew exactly what Lin Mo wanted to ask.

Lin Mo smiled and gestured to the teacup in her hand. "Aren’t you going to offer me a cup?"

Shefilya rose, poured a cup of tea for him, and set it down in front of him.

"Thank you for all your hard work on this trip to the Secret Realm."

Lin Mo’s thanks were sincere. Without Shefilya, the trip to the Secret Realm would not have gone so smoothly. In fact, Lin Mo likely wouldn’t have risked entering it at all, and he certainly wouldn’t have reaped all the subsequent rewards.

Shefilya shook her head. "As I’ve said, I was only doing my duty."

"Your duty and my gratitude are two different things."

Lin Mo drank the tea as he spoke. The flavor was crisp and refreshing, a faint fragrance lingering in the air. He could tell it was a high-quality blend.

"How have things been in Silver Stream City lately?"

Shefilya shook her head. "I’m not up to date. You can go find the Lady; she’s in her study right now."

Lin Mo shook his head. "That won’t be necessary."

’If something big had happened, I’m sure I would have heard about it.’

Just then, however, a maid approached. "Mr. Lin Mo, the Lady would like to see you."

"Uh..."

Lin Mo put down his teacup, a bit awkwardly. Since she had summoned him personally, it would be difficult to refuse.

So he nodded to Shefilya, then turned and followed the maid out of the courtyard.

He followed the maid to Lord Beixila’s study. After leading him to the door, the maid gave a slight bow, turned, and left.

Lin Mo pushed the door open and entered. Behind the desk, Lady Beixila was engrossed in her work.

"My Lord, you wished to see me?"

Lord Beixila looked up, and a smile touched her lips when she saw Lin Mo. "It’s been a while, but why so formal all of a sudden? Since Little Flora was the one who brought you here, we can consider ourselves friends. There’s no need to be so reserved."

"Haha..."

Lin Mo gave an awkward laugh. In truth, the title of "Lord" didn’t usually mean much to him. After all, he hadn’t grown up in this world, so he wasn’t bound by its notions of nobility and status.

But for some reason, the thought that this was Feney’s mother made him nervous. He felt like some delinquent who was trying to steal her daughter away.

"Feney has been thinking about you an awful lot lately..." Beixila didn’t get straight to business, instead continuing with the small talk.

"She was especially nervous after she found out you and Shefilya had gone to explore the Secret Realm. She was worried sick every day, and even wanted to go find you herself."

Lin Mo could easily picture it, and a smile touched his lips. Feney was indeed an endearing girl. With her kind personality and cute looks, it was hard for anyone to dislike her.

’As for why she was so worried... aside from him being her teammate, it was probably more because of Shefilya, who was like the big sister that had been with her since childhood.’
