Chapter 475: Ash Chooses His Own Wrist

The route sheet from the white-gold root lay across the archive table, its three circles dark except for a pulse that followed Ash whenever he approached.

Alder officials had moved the sheet into a guarded room, though the gray damage made patience scarce among everyone studying the hidden node.

One official pointed toward the first circle and said, "The child carries the matching Ringlet, so he can complete the route glyph before Concord reaches the remaining roots."

Ash stood beside his mother with one hand near the pale light above his wrist, while the official placed a copper marking frame beside the sheet.

Hajin stepped between the frame and Ash and replied, "No one places his hand on a glyph because the route is urgent, and urgency doesn’t answer what the mark will do."

The official stiffened and said, "No one intends to harm him, though the Court cannot protect a hidden population if every useful key waits for a child’s comfort."

Hajin kept his voice level as he answered, "Ash isn’t a key, and the Court can’t call an unknown effect harmless before explaining its cost."

Eirwen stood opposite the table and said, "The request is suspended until Ash receives a clear explanation, and no official touches his Ringlet while the answer remains incomplete."

Ash watched the adults speak over the map, then asked, "What happens if I touch the circle, and what happens if I decide I don’t like the answer?"

Ferra opened the copper frame and replied, "The Ringlet may answer the first pulse, reveal a direction, or treat your wrist as an anchor that must remain connected."

Ash looked at the frame and asked, "What happens if it treats me as an anchor, and no one can remove it?"

Ferra answered, "Your body may carry route pressure, the connection may resist removal, and we may need to cut the glyph before learning whether the road is safe."

Hajin turned toward Ash and said, "A healer prepared after the risk doesn’t make the risk informed, and temporary damage still matters when the person can’t remove it."

Ash’s mother touched the table and asked, "Do you want to leave while the adults argue, or do you want to hear what the route can show?"

Ash studied the three circles before replying, "I want to hear, though I don’t want anyone to place my hand there for me."

Hajin nodded toward the official and said, "If Ash touches the frame, he decides when his hand leaves it, and that condition remains recorded."

The official glanced at Eirwen, who answered, "A choice isn’t voluntary if the person loses the right to end it, so record that before the test begins."

Ferra moved the copper frame farther from the sheet and said, "One pulse can reveal direction without opening the complete road, though Ash must decide whether the information is worth contact."

Ash touched the Ringlet with his other hand and asked, "Will it make me stronger, or will it only show where the road wants to go?"

Ferra shook her head and replied, "It may make the route visible, though it won’t grant a Shard, refill power, or make you responsible for the place beyond it."

Ash looked toward Hajin and asked, "Will you stop it if I change my mind, even if the route is almost finished?"

Hajin answered, "I will stop the connection when you tell me, though I won’t choose the moment unless your body loses the ability to speak."

Ash turned toward him and said, "You’re asking my hand to carry the route, so listen when I say where it stops."

Ash stepped toward the frame with his mother beside him, then halted before the copper ring reached his skin.

He asked, "If I show only the direction, will the route understand that I am not promising to follow it?"

Ferra replied, "We can accept one pulse and sever it after the direction appears, though the cut must happen before the route requests a second answer."

Ash looked at Hajin and said, "Then I choose one pulse, and I choose to stop before the second answer."

Hajin stepped back and answered, "Your choice is recorded, and no one will guide your wrist."

Ash’s hand touched the copper ring, and the Ringlet brightened as one pale pulse traveled through the frame into the first circle.

The dark circle opened into a thin line across black mountains, beneath broken towers, and toward the white-tree population inside the hidden node.

Aria displayed a notice above the table after the line stopped:

[Informed route pulse accepted, brief Ringlet contact, no binding authority attached]

Ash watched the line end before the distant population and asked, "Is that the road, or only the part the root remembers?"

Ferra studied the direction and answered, "It’s the road’s memory rather than a safe passage, because the line ends before the protected population."

Hajin watched Ash’s wrist and thought, ’The route showed distance without ownership, and Ash ended the answer before it could claim him.’

The first circle pulsed again, and a second mark began forming beneath Ash’s wrist.

Ash pulled his fingers back and said, "Stop, because the second mark isn’t part of my choice."

Hajin moved toward the frame, though Ash’s mother reached it first and lifted the copper ring without touching the Ringlet.

The second mark vanished while the pale route line remained, and the fading light released Ash’s hand without pulling it back.

Ash breathed through the last warmth and said, "It listened when I told it to stop, so the route heard me instead of hearing the officials."

Ferra closed the frame and replied, "It listened because the first pulse never became a claim, and your choice ended the test before the route found an anchor."

Eirwen looked at the official and said, "Record the route as partial, Ash as a consenting witness, and no passage authority created by the contact."

Didi approached the table and asked, "Do you want the sheet nearby, or sealed where no one can ask again without permission?"

Ash looked toward his mother before answering, "Seal it for now, though let Hajin study the direction I chose to show."

Hajin nodded and replied, "The direction will guide questions, not command your next choice, and no map can change that boundary."

Aria added a final record above the sheet:

[Ash’s Ringlet, one voluntary pulse, route direction revealed, no binding or ownership grammar]

Gray pressure shifted in the upper palace, though it did not enter the archive after Ash gave the route direction without giving Concord his body.

Ash lowered his hand and asked, "Will the people in that hidden place know I found their road?"

Eirwen answered, "Not yet, because a warning becomes a claim when it arrives before its carrier has been heard."

Ash looked at the sealed frame and said, "Then I want to ask before we go there, even if asking makes the road take longer."

Hajin watched the officials seal the route sheet and thought, ’He didn’t complete the road, though he completed the choice that mattered first.’

Ferra packed the copper frame, and Ash left with his Ringlet dim, his wrist still his own after the route test.
