Chapter 474: Five Shards without a Throne
The lower archive had become a shelter, though Concord found the gardeners before the gray voice lost its hold on the upper palace.
Twelve unranked workers stood beside the old seed vault, root dust covering their clothes while pale command marks circled their throats.
The senior keeper entered behind them and said, "The palace needs a living channel, and these gardeners know how to carry root memory without breaking it."
Didi stepped between him and the workers as Crowned Frost gathered beneath her feet, then replied, "You call people channels because the word makes their bodies sound like tools."
The keeper raised one hand, and marks around the gardeners’ throats tightened until several workers lowered their eyes toward the stone floor.
He said, "They accepted service to the Court, and Concord asks them to continue until the palace reaches one answer."
Didi looked along the line and asked, "Did you accept this command, or did you accept work before a foreign voice entered your thoughts?"
The oldest gardener lifted her head and answered, "We accepted the work, not this, though the mark says my hands will move whenever I refuse."
Hajin stood beside the archive door with the Chain around one arm and said, "A bloodless command still removes choice before the body obeys."
Didi raised her gloved hand and replied, "A palace can assign work, set a schedule, and dismiss a worker, though yesterday’s agreement cannot become today’s ownership."
Gray voice entered the seed vault through the ceiling:
[Unranked vessels available, command route stable, complete channel within reach]
Eirwen’s voice came through the archive relay as she said, "Didi, the command route joins their blood to the root beneath the seed bed, so breaking it may send backlash through everyone marked."
Didi kept her eyes on the gardeners and answered, "I will take the backlash before it reaches them, though I won’t take their futures as payment."
Hajin tightened the Chain around his forearm and said, "State the limit before you mark them, because rescue must not become another authority."
Didi nodded and faced the workers as Crowned Frost spread from her feet in a narrow ring that stopped before touching anyone.
She said, "I mark you protected from this command, and the protection asks nothing from you, including service, loyalty, blood, or a promise to follow me afterward."
The oldest gardener stared at the frost and asked, "If I refuse your protection, will the mark leave me alone?"
Didi answered, "Yes, you may refuse it, accept it briefly, or walk away when the route opens, because freedom belongs inside the protection."
The keeper’s gray light flared as he said, "A protector who releases the protected has no claim over the result, so your power will scatter before reaching the command route."
Didi looked at him and replied, "Then it will scatter, because power that survives by owning the person it saves follows the same rule you brought here."
She placed two fingers against the stone, and Crowned Frost rose around the gardeners without touching skin while pale Sovereign marks loosened the foreign hold.
Gray voice pushed through the seed bed, and the backlash struck Didi’s arm hard enough to split her glove along the palm.
Hajin reached toward her shoulder, though Didi shook her head and said, "Don’t carry this for me, because I chose the cost before placing the mark."
The command route tightened around the workers, while Crowned Frost held space between the foreign lines and their bodies.
Eirwen’s partial Zone formed three green paths as she said, "The Brand creates a refusal boundary, though the root still treats the gardeners as one channel."
She continued, "Didi must separate their choices before the route can understand which protection each person accepts."
Didi heard her and replied, "I will ask each person to choose, and the mark will follow the answer rather than deciding it."
She turned toward the oldest gardener and asked, "Do you accept protection for this moment, with the right to leave when the danger ends?"
The woman pressed one hand over her throat and answered, "I accept it, though I don’t swear to serve you afterward."
Frost brightened around her and opened space around the next worker.
The second gardener stepped into that space and said, "I accept protection until I reach my family in the lower archive, then I choose for myself."
The third worker shook his head before replying, "I don’t know you well enough for a royal mark, though I want the foreign command removed if you can remove only that."
Didi nodded toward him and answered, "That is still a choice, and I will protect your refusal from both voices while the route breaks."
The keeper watched the lines separate and said, "You waste authority on people who cannot repay it, while Concord gives one decision to every mind without uncertainty."
Didi’s arm shook beneath the backlash, though she kept her fingers against the stone and replied, "Uncertainty is where a person decides, and I won’t close that space because you find it inefficient."
The fourth gardener lowered his eyes and said, "I accept protection from the command, though I refuse it if the Court can count me as Didi’s subject."
Didi answered, "Accepted, and your refusal remains part of the mark."
The remaining workers spoke one at a time, each naming a boundary before Crowned Frost carried the answer through the command lines.
Others set limits, and one refused the mark while asking Didi to sever the hold.
The last Sovereign line appeared beneath a gardener’s throat, and the bloodless route lost its shared center as gray voice broke into twelve fragments.
The keeper staggered when the seed bed released foreign pressure, then reached toward the roots to force the fragments together.
Hajin set the Chain across the seed bed and said, "The route lost the people who made it stable, so don’t turn their refusal into permission to seize the root."
The keeper looked through the gray light and replied, "Without one answer, they return to fear, hunger, and the failures that made Concord necessary."
Didi pulled her hand from the stone, and backlash entered her chest as cold pressure that bent her knees.
The Sovereign’s Brand burned beneath her glove, then opened into a fifth Shard above her shoulder with a pale crown of frost at its center.
Aria displayed two records above Didi’s wrist:
[Sovereign’s Brand, fifth Shard threshold reached, protection authority expanded]
[Three unassigned stat points granted, no healing or mana refill applied]
Didi breathed through the pain as the fifth Shard settled above her, and the system restored neither health nor power.
Hajin moved beside her and asked, "Can you stand, or are you using the Brand to hide the damage?"
Didi answered, "I can stand, though standing isn’t restoration, and the cost remains in my blood while the gardeners owe me nothing."
The oldest gardener touched the fading mark at her throat and said, "I will remember that your protection left my choice in my hands."
Didi lowered her glove and replied, "Remember the choice rather than my name, because the mark belongs to your freedom before it belongs to me."
The keeper’s gray light withdrew with its fragments, leaving every gardener behind.
Eirwen’s voice reached the archive and said, "The route broke here, though the keeper remains connected, so this protection bought time rather than ending the invasion."
Didi looked at the fifth Shard above her shoulder and answered, "Time is enough when the people inside it can still choose what happens next."
The gardeners walked toward the lower archive as command marks faded, while Didi stood beside the empty seed bed with five Shards and no throne beneath them.
