Chapter 121: The Zombie King’s Favor
If only one zombie were digging, it would be slow. But now, with a thousand zombies digging around the Protective Shield, the progress was incredibly fast.
The Zombie King was smart. Fearing he would alert the barrier, he controlled the zombies to take a step back and dig from a certain distance.
Under The Zombie King’s command and control, they were fast and quiet.
Before long, a downward trench appeared a meter outside the barrier. It was about half a meter wide and twenty to thirty centimeters deep.
But the trench continued to deepen. The zombies’ speed was not to be underestimated. The Zombie King stood not far off, his arms crossed over his chest.
The fingertips of his lower hand tapped unconsciously. He bowed his head, as if deep in thought.
In reality, he was establishing a connection with every single zombie, allowing him to suppress and control them with his absolute hierarchical advantage.
Perhaps the greatest advantage of zombies was that they never tired. As long as their Crystal Cores remained, they would have endless energy to work.
In the latter half of the night, the trench grew deeper and deeper, and they even began to dig a turn in the direction of the RV.
Another hour passed. The zombies successfully bypassed the barrier, reaching the ground inside. Now, all they had to do was break through the surface to complete the first step of their plan.
Meanwhile, Lily Hart and the others were sound asleep. The only one suffering from insomnia was probably Stan Sterling, who was still staring at the ceiling, wondering about the meaning of her last words before she left.
Lying in bed, he groggily heard some noise from outside. He cautiously got up and went to the floor-to-ceiling window.
And saw a shocking scene. Countless zombies had completely surrounded the RV, the hotel, and the convenience store.
Some zombies were breaking through the ground not far from the RV, while others were crawling in through the trench outside.
Everything seemed to be happening in an orderly fashion. Stan Sterling covered his mouth to keep from making a sound, unable to believe the scene before him.
He quickly looked down and typed something on his Light Brain. After rapidly sending a few messages, he worried they wouldn’t believe him, so he took a photo and sent it as well.
The Zombie King had also come inside. He still stood in the center of the zombie horde with his arms crossed, as if he had sensed something.
He looked sharply up at the hotel’s third floor, his gaze landing precisely on a certain balcony.
But it was pitch-black there, and nothing was visible. The Zombie King withdrew his gaze, his fingertips tapping his temple as he frowned slightly.
Stan Sterling held his breath. The moment his gaze swept over, Stan Sterling quickly hid behind the wall.
He didn’t dare peek out again. ’There must be a High-level Zombie in the horde, one that can sense my presence and energy fluctuations.’
He had no choice but to slowly crouch down and turn his Light Brain’s brightness to the minimum. He saw that they hadn’t replied...
’They must be dead asleep.’
Stan Sterling grew anxious. ’If you’re dead asleep now, you might be actually dead later!’
He had no other choice. He didn’t dare make a reckless move, not even daring to leave the room, terrified that the High-level Zombie would detect his movements.
But... doing nothing wasn’t an option!
Stan Sterling had never seen a scene like this. Back at Auspice Base, he had usually undergone grueling training.
An idea flashed through his mind. The situation was urgent, leaving no time for second thoughts. Stan Sterling pulled something out of his spatial storage and gripped it tightly in his hand.
Then, he slid open the balcony door, strode out, and forcefully threw the grenade in his hand—
He didn’t have time to see what effect the grenade would have when it landed. The moment he threw it, he spun around and rushed back into the room.
But just as one foot crossed the threshold, his body lifted uncontrollably into the air, flying backward as a sense of weightlessness washed over him.
Stan Sterling squeezed his eyes shut, already imagining his fate. But he landed securely on the ground, coming face-to-face with The Zombie King.
Unexpectedly, the grenade never hit the ground. A High-level Zombie had caught it and popped it directly into its mouth.
It started chewing with a CRUNCH, CRUNCH. Stan Sterling watched, dumbfounded, and took a frightened step back.
The Zombie King tilted his head slightly, sizing him up. He took a step forward and buried his face in the crook of Stan Sterling’s neck, sniffing lightly.
Stan Sterling’s body went rigid. He didn’t even dare to breathe too heavily. As The Zombie King leaned in, he turned his head away and closed his eyes.
He thought he was about to be bitten to death, but he wasn’t. The Zombie King just took a sniff and then stepped back in disgust.
"Take him aside," The Zombie King said, waving a dismissive hand while pinching his nose. A zombie promptly dragged Stan Sterling away.
Only after Stan Sterling was pulled away did The Zombie King lower the hand from his nose. He took a deep breath of the faint, sweet scent in the air, a look of satisfaction slowly spreading across his face.
And all the surrounding zombies wore more or less the same expression. Even though Lily Hart was inside the RV, several meters away...
...to the zombies’ keen sense of smell, it was no different from her spraying perfume right in front of them.
"Attack!" The corner of The Zombie King’s mouth curled up. His unusually soft tongue licked his lips, as if fantasizing about the delicious taste of human flesh.
All the zombies surged forward, rushing toward the RV in the center. The captured Stan Sterling struggled desperately.
He wanted to shout, but his mouth was gagged. He wanted to fight, but his body was bound. What’s more, his guards were two High-level Zombies. He stood no chance against them...
’Boss Hart will have to fend for herself.’
As the zombies reached the front of the RV, Frost Shaw, in the convenience store, sensed that something was wrong. ’Why are the surrounding energy fluctuations so chaotic?’
He rubbed his eyes and sat up. Wrapping a thin blanket around himself, he went to the balcony. One look outside, and—holy crap, a dense horde of zombies!
Frost Shaw was instantly wide awake. He concealed his aura and returned inside the convenience store, waking up Roman Rowe while simultaneously calling Leo Colby on his Light Brain.
He then tried to notify Lily Hart in the RV, but either the RV’s soundproofing was too good, or Lily Hart was sleeping too soundly.
It wasn’t until Frost Shaw’s call came through that Lily Hart woke up, full of morning crankiness. "Hello? What do you want?"
Frost Shaw spoke quickly and gravely, "There’s a zombie horde outside. Stay hidden and don’t come out."
"Huh?" Lily Hart, in a single motion of shock and turning over, rolled right off the bed. She then scrambled frantically back to her feet.
She went to the window, carefully lifted a tiny corner of the curtain, and peeked out. The first thing she saw was The Zombie King, standing out from the horde like a crane among chickens.
He was two meters tall with a sturdy build and ordinary features. But perhaps empowered by his strength, one look at him was enough to strike fear into your heart.
Lily Hart took one quick glance before immediately closing the curtain. She patted her chest, reassuring herself. ’He can’t get in.’
’Wait a minute! But how the hell did they get outside the RV?! What about the Protective Shield? Did they eat it?!’
Lily Hart lifted the curtain again and scanned the area carefully. Only then did she discover that they had dug a tunnel!
’They pulled a fast one while I was sleeping! Those inhuman bastards!’
’Alright, alright, they’re zombies, after all...’
But Lily Hart wasn’t too worried. The RV had another layer of protection. ’They can’t dig a tunnel through this one... right?’
She relaxed a little, but then it suddenly occurred to her that the convenience store and the hotel didn’t have this layer of protection. Only the RV did. It wasn’t realistic for them to come over now. ’What if they get eaten by zombies the moment they step outside?’
Lily Hart started to worry again. She replied to Frost Shaw, "The RV has a protection mechanism, but the convenience store and the hotel don’t. You guys be careful."
She lifted the curtain, wanting to see the zombies’ next move.
The result... they were charging straight for the RV, attacking it one after another.
’What the hell is this chaos!’
