Chapter 41: Where is my money?
Nancy held a tray in her hand, and on it was a plate of grilled chicken, roasted vegetables, and a small bowl of soup. She locked the door with a key immediately she stepped in.
Violet stepped to the side, and Nancy walked straight to the nightstand without a word. She placed the tray on the table.
"Your lunch is served, miss." The head maid’s voice resounded softly in the room. She walked over to the door and stood in front of it.
"Lunch?" Violet’s hands curled into fists at her sides. She didn’t need lunch, she needed to be let out. "Thank you, but there’s no need, I need to leave." And she needed medicine for her headache.
After she kept the food, Nancy stopped in front of the door, blocking Violet’s path.
Violet narrowed her eyes. "Open the door and step aside." she said, her voice dripping with cold.
Nancy simply lowered her eyes. "I’m sorry, miss, but Mr. Sullivan has instructed that you are not be let out of the room."
Just as she’d expected.
Violet inhaled a deep, slow breath, willing herself to stay calm. She needed to use the system, but that wouldn’t be possible if Nancy kept her eyes lowered.
"Lift your head, let’s see if you can say that while looking into my eyes."
"I’m sorry, miss, I can’t. Your request to leave is denied." she stated again. "And please don’t try to bang on the door, it’s useless." she said, and turned around.
Violet couldn’t let her leave, so she reached out quickly toward her. She’d force her head up if that’s what it took to make eye contact.
But Nancy nimbly moved aside, turned around and glared at Violet. She’d been trying to stay calm and respectful, only because James had requested Violet be treated well, but it seemed the young lady didn’t want that.
"I wouldn’t try that if I were you." Her tone was cold, the initial warmth she’d carried completely morphed into something dark and bitter.
They locked eyes, that’s all Violet needed. She was about to blink when Nancy looked past her. "Don’t cause trouble. Eat, and behave well if you want a comfortable stay." With that, she turned around and walked out of the room, shutting the door before Violet could utter another word.
Violet stared at the spot where she’d been standing, in total disbelief, unable to comprehend how, or why, the maid had refused to hold eye contact for more than a second.
She pressed her hand against the door and slammed her fist on it.
"Let me out of here, you moron!" she yelled.
But even she knew that was useless.
She returned to the bed, feeling frustrated and completely helpless. The food continued to sit on the nightstand, untouched.
Violet pushed a hand through her hair, anger coursing through her veins.
She couldn’t even call for help, since her purse and phone had been taken away from her. Kierra Adams’s phone was still in her space, but she didn’t want to risk leaving a trail, so she couldn’t use it.
The windows were open, but she couldn’t jump, it was too high, and using something long to go down was out of the question because there were guards stationed below, they would certainly catch her and bring her back up.
The next three hours felt like torture for Violet, filled with mounting frustration. The only good thing was that her headache had finally stopped.
Still, with each second that ticked by, Violet felt like she was going to completely lose her senses.
If he’d brought her home, why wasn’t he speaking to her already? Why feed and lock her up instead? Violet wondered.
She sat on the bed and rested her back against the frame. Her stomach rumbled, twisting into itself, and she brought out the plate of food she’d stored in her spatial inventory earlier and ate it.
Just as she finished eating and returned the empty plate, the door clicked open and Nancy stepped into the room. She stayed by the door and said sharply, "Come with me."
Violet stood up. "Where are we going?" she asked, but Nancy didn’t bother giving her a reply.
When she stepped outside the door, she realised there were two other maids behind her. Nancy led the way, while the other two ensured she didn’t run off.
When they stopped in front of a brown oak door, Violet immediately knew they were outside Harry’s study.
Nancy knocked twice in succession, and a few seconds passed before Harry invited them in.
Nancy walked in first, followed closely by Violet, while the other two maids remained at the door.
Harry was seated behind his desk. Nancy stopped a few feet away, bowed respectfully, and said, "Sir, I’ve brought Miss Violet here, just as you requested."
Harry simply hummed and dismissed her with a wave of his hand.
After Nancy exited the room, he pointed to the couch at the side.
"Have a seat, Violet." he said, without looking up from the laptop in front of him.
Violet didn’t sit, she remained standing, arms crossed over her chest. Now that she was here, she’d simply use her mind push on him and make him let her go.
But first, she needed to get him to lock eyes with her.
"You know this counts as kidnapping, right?" she asked, radiating a calm she didn’t fully feel.
Harry’s hand on the keyboard paused, and he let out a soft, mocking chuckle. "I’m your father. There’s nothing wrong with bringing my daughter home."
Seeing him laugh, a knot formed in Violet’s stomach, she wanted to wipe the stupid smile right off his face.
"You think that gives you the right to treat me like this? Lock me up like an animal?" She forced the words out through gritted teeth.
Harry stood, grabbed the glass of whiskey off the table, and walked to the floor-to-ceiling window at the side.
"Where is my money?" His voice came out rough and distant, as though he were speaking to a stranger, not his daughter.
Violet’s jaw tightened, frustration boiling under her skin at his refusal to even face her. He should be facing her, not turning his back on her.
"You make it sound like I stole your money. You sent me to an auction, and I did what’s done there."
