Chapter 78: The Heart Below
*
The fall lasted longer than Leon expected.
He dropped through absolute darkness, the Aura of the End-Game wrapped tight around his body like a second skin. The glowing veins in the shaft walls rushed past in continuous crimson lines. The deeper he went, the stronger the pressure became—not physical weight, but a slow, deliberate attention focused entirely on him.
The bone shard in his inventory burned steadily now, no longer flaring in pulses but maintaining a constant heat against his side.
When the shaft finally opened, Leon landed in a crouch on a surface of seamless black stone.
The chamber was vast.
It stretched farther than the Ashen Fog could immediately map, its ceiling lost in darkness high above. The walls were not bone this time. They were something denser—layered plates of dark mineral shot through with the same crimson veins, but thicker, older, and moving in slow, tidal rhythms. In the center of the chamber rose a single massive structure: a cocoon of fused yellowed bone and black iron the size of a small fortress. Deep grooves covered its surface, the same claw-like marks he had seen in the upper galleries, only far larger.
The presence lived inside that cocoon.
Leon stood and let the domain expand to its full radius. Absolute darkness rolled across the black stone floor. Where it touched the nearest veins, the crimson light retreated and died. The cocoon noticed. A deep, resonant vibration passed through the chamber, strong enough to send fine dust drifting down from above.
No guardians appeared.
Instead, the cocoon itself began to change.
Sections of the outer bone plates shifted and pulled back with the sound of grinding stone. Crimson light spilled from the growing openings. Something inside was unfolding—slowly, deliberately, as though it had not moved in a very long time and was testing each joint.
Leon watched without moving.
A long, articulated limb of yellowed bone and dark iron emerged first, ending in a claw large enough to crush a siege engine. A second limb followed. Then the upper portion of a vast torso began to rise, still partially bound by the remaining cocoon plates. Two sockets of pure crimson light opened in what served as a skull, fixing on Leon with unmistakable focus.
No system window named it.
No level appeared.
The pressure that rolled off the emerging form was heavier than any Concord commander, heavier even than the Bone Warden. This was not a guardian. This was the reason the guardians had existed.
Leon rolled his shoulders once and adjusted his grip on the Abyssal Stinger.
The massive claw scraped against the black stone as the entity pulled more of itself free. The vibration in the chamber deepened into a continuous low growl that seemed to come from the walls themselves.
Leon took a single step forward.
The crimson sockets brightened.
Whatever had slept under the Bleached Expanse for so long had finished waking.
And it had decided he was the first thing it would kill.
