Apocalypse Regression: I Am the SSS-Rank Nightmare

Chapter 73: Deeper into the Bleached Expanse

The secondary gate closed behind Leon with a soft, final sigh, sealing away the fortress he had just turned into a tomb.

Ahead stretched the true face of Floor 8.

The Bleached Expanse was wider than any sector he had crossed before. Cracked white stone ran to every horizon, broken only by jagged ridges of pale bone that rose like the ribs of some long-dead colossus. The sky hung low and iron-gray, heavy with a dry, metallic wind that carried no scent of life. In the far distance, slow-moving storms of white dust drifted across the plain, their edges glowing faintly with residual crimson mana.

Leon walked.

There was no need to run. The Aura of the End-Game moved with him, a quiet sphere of absolute darkness that erased the thin ambient mana before it could even touch his skin. The drought of Floor 8, which would have crippled most candidates, registered as little more than a mild inconvenience. His core remained full. His senses remained sharp.

Through the Ashen Fog he felt the land differently than the Concord’s old maps would have described it. The previous commanders had treated this expanse as empty buffer territory. They were wrong. The stone itself held faint, lingering echoes—traces of older battles, older deaths, and something deeper that had been buried rather than defeated.

He followed those echoes.

Two hours into the crossing, the first real resistance found him.

A patrol of twelve Concord scouts emerged from a dust storm ahead, moving in tight formation. Their armor was lighter than the fortress elites, designed for speed rather than defense, but the mana signatures were still high. They had clearly been ordered to locate the source of the fortress collapse.

They saw him at the same moment he allowed them to.

The lead scout raised a hand. Crimson light gathered at the tip of a long spear.

Leon did not wait for the attack.

He stepped forward and let the domain breathe outward.

The dust storm itself withered. The twelve scouts staggered as their attributes plummeted and the very air around them turned heavy. Before they could reform, Leon was already among them. The Abyssal Stinger moved in short, efficient arcs—no wasted motion, no grand techniques. Each thrust found a gap in armor or the soft junction beneath a crystal mask. Necrotic Injection did the rest.

Twelve bodies became twelve scattered mounds of gray sand in under twenty seconds.

He continued walking without looking back.

The power that flowed into him settled quietly this time, a steady warmth rather than a violent surge. The land around him remained empty for a long while after that. Only the wind and the distant bone ridges kept him company.

Near the third hour, the terrain began to change.

The cracked white stone gave way to smoother plates of pale material that felt almost like polished ivory under his boots. The bone ridges grew taller and closer together, forming natural corridors. Faint crimson veins pulsed deeper beneath the surface, as though something far below was still alive and slowly circulating power through the floor itself.

Leon paused at the entrance to one such corridor and extended his Perception fully.

Something large was waiting ahead.

Not another standard Concord garrison. The signature was older, heavier, and laced with a different kind of authority—less hierarchical, more territorial. Whatever commanded this stretch of the Bleached Expanse had not been installed by the current Concord leadership. It had been here longer.

He entered the corridor.

The walls rose high on either side, cutting off the iron sky. The air grew still. Even the dry wind failed to follow him in. After several hundred yards the corridor opened into a wide, circular depression in the land, like a natural amphitheater carved from the bone itself.

At the center stood a single figure.

It was taller than any Concord commander he had faced so far, its body formed from interlocking plates of yellowed bone and dark iron. No crystal mask covered its face—only a smooth, featureless skull with two deep sockets that burned with steady crimson light. In its hands it held a long, double-edged glaive of the same pale material as the surrounding ridges.

The entity turned its skull toward him.

No mental voice spoke. No system translation offered a name or rank. The pressure that rolled off it was older and more personal than Concord hierarchy.

Leon stopped at the edge of the depression and studied it in silence.

This one would not fall to the same pattern as the others.

He rolled his shoulders once, feeling the weight of the Void Monarch Set settle comfortably across his frame, and stepped down into the amphitheater.

The bone glaive rose in answer.

The true depths of Floor 8 had noticed him at last.
