Chapter 8: The Desecrated Hero
POV: Victor
The lingering gold dust from the destroyed divine seal scattered harmlessly into the dark cavern air, dissolving like faint embers against the damp stone floor.
Lyra’s breath gradually evened out as she rested against my chest, her freshly unsealed ice core harmonizing effortlessly with the cold, dark pulse of my Obsidian Keystone. Beside us, Aria slowly withdrew her hands from my knee, her golden eyes flashing with quiet, feral satisfaction as she sensed the permanent shift in Lyra’s devotion.
"Can you walk?" I asked softly, running my palm over the back of Lyra’s silver hair one last time before stepping back.
"With you at my side? Always," Lyra replied, her voice smooth, steady, and devoid of the agonizing strain that had tormented her for a decade. She stood up with effortless grace, her posture reforming into that of a highborn Northern Duchess yet her eyes remained locked on mine, burning with absolute, unwavering loyalty.
I gestured toward the ancient passageway leading away from the throne chamber. "Then let us collect what remains in the outer chambers. Our business in these depths is nearly finished."
The massive stone archway leading out of the Sunken Temple was heavily encrusted with ancient, glowing moss and damp lichen. The subterranean dampness clung to the dark velvet of my coat as we made our way back toward the upper subterranean tunnels. The silence in the wake of the broken seal was heavy, broken only by the steady, rhythmic echo of our footsteps against the worn granite flags.
Lyra walked tightly at my left side, her hand locked firm within mine. The cold tremor that had defined her physical presence for the last decade was gone, replaced by a smooth, icy composure that hummed in perfect resonance with my own obsidian mana. To my right, Aria drifted like a shadow, her ears twitching occasionally toward the dark corridors above. Her daggers remained drawn, their dark blades coated in paralyzed demon-venom, ready to strike if necessary.
"The seal’s destruction felt like a fever breaking after ten long years," Lyra murmured, her voice steady, carrying a sharp, underlying edge. Her ice-blue eyes flickered toward me, glowing with a subtle, dark brilliance. "My father... he forged my signature on the Church’s marital pledge when I was fourteen. He used my ’illness’ to declare me unfit to manage administrative duties, using the decree to strip my birthright as the eldest heir."
"A classic political maneuver," I replied, my thumb absently tracing the knuckles of her cold hand. "House Frostguard controls three-fourths of the Empire’s northern iron and mana-crystal mines. By declaring you unfit, your father ensured that the Church could manage the estates under the guise of ’guardianship’ while receiving massive tax exemptions all while Lucas absorbed your surplus magic to fuel his holy aura."
Aria let out a soft, mocking huff from the shadow of her dark leather cloak. "The ’Hero’ didn’t even realize he was leaching you. Every time he stood near Lady Lyra during training duels at the Academy, his divine sword glowed twice as bright. He truly believed Solaria was blessing his holy devotion, unaware he was simply sucking the marrow from an enslaved girl."
"He will learn the truth soon enough," I said, pausing at the base of the grand staircase that led up into the central rotunda of the outer ruins.
Above us, heavy footsteps boomed against the marble floor. The unmistakable, arrogant radiance of Church-sanctioned light mana pulsed through the cracks in the ancient ceiling. Lucas had not fled the ruins entirely after his panic-stricken retreat from the throne; he had regrouped at the central altar room, gathering the remaining paladins of the Sun-Glaive Order to stage what he undoubtedly imagined would be a dramatic, heroic stand.

"Stay behind me until I give the word," I instructed softly, releasing Lyra’s hand.
She complied instantly, stepping back half a pace without a single word of protest a stark contrast to her previous, high-handed noble demeanor at the Academy. Aria melted entirely into the shadow cast by a collapsed pillar, her presence vanishing so completely that even high-tier sensor mages would have assumed the corridor was empty.
I pushed open the heavy iron-bound doors of the rotunda.
The grand altar room was bathed in an artificial golden light. Massive banners bearing the sun-crest of Solaria hung from the vaulted ceiling, though several were charred from the earlier skirmish. In the center of the hall, flanked by four alert paladins with shields raised, stood Lucas.
He had recovered a sliver of his composure, his golden armor gleaming under his active aura. He held his sacred sword, Solarias, in both hands, its blade radiating a bright, confident yellow light. Though his eyes flared with underlying anger and lingering shock, he wore the proud, righteous posture of an Imperial Hero backed by the Church.
"VICTOR!" Lucas shouted, his voice echoing off the stone walls as he pointed the tip of his glowing blade directly at my chest. "Heretic! You dare step onto sacred ground after deploying your foul, dark sorcery?!"
I stepped into the light of the rotunda, my expression impassive, my coat swaying gently with each unhurried step. I didn’t bother drawing a weapon. My dark obsidian core hummed quietly within my chest, completely suppressed, making me look to an unrefined eye like nothing more than an unarmored, core-damaged noble.
"You make a great deal of noise, Lucas," I purred, my tone light, almost conversational.
"Shut up!" Lucas snapped, stepping forward as his golden aura flared brightly, burning away the dark mist near the entrance. "You used a forbidden mind-shattering curse on Lady Lyra! I felt the divine bond sever! What have you done to her, you filthy Vance parasite?!"
"I didn’t break her mind, Lucas," I said, stopping twenty paces from his blade. "I simply took back what belonged to House Vance. And as for Lyra... why don’t you ask her yourself?"
I gestured lightly with my left hand.
Lyra stepped out from the shadowy doorway behind me. She did not wear the panicked, weeping expression Lucas so desperately expected. She stepped forward with the cold, majestic elegance of a true Northern Duchess. Her silver hair fell in immaculate waves over her shoulders, her dark blue noble robes pristine, and her frost mana swirling effortlessly around her fingers in tiny, delicate crystalline diamonds.
Lucas’s eyes widened, though he quickly forced a confident, heroic grin onto his face.
"Lyra!" Lucas called out, taking a grand step forward with his free hand extended, adopting his usual rehearsed posture. "Thank Sun God you are safe! Come here, quickly! Step behind my shield! This heretic forced dark magic into your system, but the High Priests can cleanse you! I will cut him down and protect you!"
Lyra stopped beside me. She didn’t look at Lucas with fear, nor with the brainwashed reverence he had enjoyed for ten long years. She looked at him as if he were a minor annoyance on the hem of her gown.
"Touch me with your filthy light again, Lucas," Lyra said, her voice dropping into a register so cold it caused the four paladins behind him to shift uncomfortably, "and I will freeze the blood inside your heart before you can draw another breath."
Lucas’s smile faltered, his hand freezing in mid-air. "L-Lyra...? What are you saying? It’s me! Lucas! Your betrothed! The Hero chosen by the Church to save you from your illness!"
"My illness?" Lyra let out a sharp, mocking laugh that cut through the cavern air like a glass blade. "You mean the "Glacial Collapse" your High Priests engineered? Or perhaps you mean the parasitic relic shoved into my chest that leached my life force every time you pretended to ’pray’ for my recovery?"
"What nonsense is this?!" Lucas roared, his pride flaring as he channeled his divine mana into a sweeping shockwave meant to overpower us. "She’s cursed! Seize the heretic!"
The four paladins surged forward, blades drawn, but before they could close the distance, the shadows behind them moved.
SLASH!
Two crisp, dark arcs of shadow-mana sliced through the air. Blood sprayed across the marble floor as Aria materialized behind two of the guards, her daggers disarming them and forcing them to their knees in a fraction of a second. The remaining two paladins halted, their weapons trembling as Aria’s cold, slitted golden eyes locked onto them from beneath her hood.
"Stand down," I commanded smoothly, taking a single step forward.
Lucas growled, lunging directly at me with Solarias raised for a high-vertical strike, intent on overpowering me with raw, holy energy. "I am the Chosen Hero! You are nothing but a disgraced cripple!"
CLANG!
I didn’t even draw a sword. I raised my right arm, bringing my obsidian-reinforced signet ring up to meet the edge of his divine blade. Dark, dense gravity-mana flared from my palm, deflecting his heavy overhead strike cleanly off-course.
The momentum sent Lucas stumbling sideways. Before he could regain his footing, I drove my left boot directly into his chest plate.
BOOM!
The impact echoed like a thunderclap. Lucas was hurled backward through the air, crashing hard against the altar steps. His golden armor scuffed against the granite, his divine aura sputtering violently as he skidded to a halt at the base of Solaria’s altar.
He scrambled back up onto one knee, coughing, his golden hair messily falling over his face. His eyes burned with intense humiliation and fury as he glared at me, his knuckles turning white around his sword hilt. He wasn’t broken he still possessed immense holy mana and the Church’s backing but the sheer disrespect of being kicked aside like a common novice burned deeper than any physical wound.
"You... you dirty heretic..." Lucas rasped, breathing heavily as he forced himself back up, holding his sword high. "You think this changes anything?! The Church stands behind me! The entire Empire knows I am the Chosen Hero!"
"Then run back to your masters, Lucas," I purred, my dark eyes looking down at him with utter disdain. "Tell Archbishop Varos that the Warden of the Core has claimed what was stolen. Tell him to prepare his little games at the Academy... because I am coming to take everything else."
Lucas gritted his teeth, his jaw tight as he realized he was outmatched in position and outnumbered in this chamber. He didn’t drop his sword, but he backed away slowly toward the northern exit, keeping his blade pointed at us.
"This isn’t over, Victor!" Lucas spat, his voice trembling with humiliated rage. "When we return to the Capital, the Church will declare you an outlaw! You won’t survive the Academy!"
With a sharp sweep of his cape, Lucas turned and retreated up the stairs with his surviving guards, leaving the ruined altar in complete silence.

I turned my back on the exit, looking down at Lyra and Aria.
"Pack the remaining relics in the vault," I instructed smoothly, offering my arms to both women. "We have a carriage to catch to the Royal Imperial Academy."
