Chapter 7: The Shattered Chain
The lingering echoes of Lucas’s desperate footsteps faded into the subterranean depths of the Sunken Temple, leaving behind only the heavy, suffocating silence of ancient stone.
The moment the hero vanished, Lyra’s strength gave out entirely.
Her knees buckled, and she collapsed onto the wet stone floor of the temple vault, her body trembling violently. White, unnatural frost crawled across her porcelain skin like spiderwebs, but beneath the ice, a burning, unnatural fever flared on her cheeks. Her breathing became ragged, shallow, and agonizing.
In the center of her forehead, a glowing, golden runic mark implanted deep within her cranium by the Church a decade ago pulsed with harsh, jagged light, violently rejecting her natural ice core.
Aria stood a few paces back in the shadows of the temple’s basalt pillars, her golden demon eyes narrowed in high alert. Her hidden daggers remained drawn, her dark purple hair swaying softly as her cat-like ears twitched toward the exit conduits.
"Lucas and his paladins fled toward the surface, Master," Aria whispered, her voice low and purring. "They won’t dare enter these depths again tonight."
"Good," I said smoothly, stepping toward the shivering noblewoman.
I knelt beside Lyra, the dark velvet of my coat brushing against the cold, damp rock of the sunken vault. When my fingers lightly touched her cheek, she flinched, gasping as a wave of uncontrolled, jagged frost flared against my skin.
"V-Victor..." Lyra rasped, her ice-blue eyes hazy, unfocused, and glossy with tears of pain. "Stay back... the Holy Seal... it’s tearing my core apart. If it detonates..."
"It won’t," I murmured, my voice absolute and calm.
I raised my right hand. The obsidian signet ring on my middle finger began to pulse, radiating a dense, midnight-black mana that pooled around my palm like liquid shadow.
When the Church forced that golden seal into her mind ten years ago at the Imperial Villa, they didn’t just suppress her memories they built a parasitic bridge. They turned her natural, high-tier Ice Core into an external mana battery for Lucas, while conditioning her brain to believe that the agony she felt was a "hereditary curse" that only Lucas’s holy light could soothe.
It was a masterclass in psychological and magical enslavement. And tonight, within the damp walls of this sunken ruin, I was going to tear it out by the roots.
"Hold her down, Aria," I commanded softly.
"With pleasure, Master," Aria purred.
In a blur of motion, the shadow assassin was at Lyra’s side, pressing her shoulders gently but firmly against the temple stone, holding her still as her body convulsed.
I pressed my obsidian-infused palm directly over the glowing golden seal on Lyra’s forehead.
BZZZZZZT!
A blinding flash of holy light erupted from her skin as the Church’s magic fought back. The divine runes burned violently, attempting to purge my dark mana, but my Obsidian Keystone Core didn’t clash with her ice it absorbed the chaotic friction, acting as a black hole that swallowed the violent shockwaves whole.
[ SYSTEM ALERT: EXCISE DIVINE SEAL? ]

[ Warning: Subject will experience memory restoration overload. ]
"Purge," I thought coldly.
I plunged my dark mana deeper, driving the obsidian threads straight into the roots of the divine seal embedded in her soul.
Lyra’s eyes snapped wide open. A high-pitched, breathless scream tore from her throat as ten years of false realities, suppressed rage, and stolen memories shattered like delicate glass inside her mind.
The fake, glorified memories evaporated into smoke:
She no longer saw Lucas gallantly saving her from a stray ice beast as a child.
The horrific, unvarnished truth flooded back:
She saw the cold, sterile underground chamber of the Imperial Villa. She saw her father, Duke Frostguard, counting a massive chest of Church gold in the corner of the room, turning his back on his own blood. She saw Archbishop Varos holding her down with holy restraints while a young, nervous Lucas stood in the background, watching as a glowing, parasitic needle forced a holy seal directly into her nine-year-old cranium.
She relived the terrifying realization of her younger self knowing her own father had sold her soul and her magical potential to the Church just to buy a permanent seat on the Imperial High Council.
"Aaaaaahgh!" Lyra choked out, her back arching sharply off the stone floor as hot tears streamed down her cold face.
CRACK!
The golden seal on her forehead fractured. A sound like shattering crystal echoed through the sunken vault, and a wave of pure, unadulterated dark-ice mana exploded outward, freezing the temple walls instantly in black-tinted frost.
The golden light died completely. The holy seal crumbled into harmless gold dust, scattering across her dark silver hair.
Silence descended upon the subterranean chamber.
Lyra lay still, her chest heaving as the burning fever vanished, replaced by a smooth, deep, and harmonious circulation of cold mana. Her eyes slowly opened. The hazy condition was gone, replaced by a crystalline, piercing blue that burned with absolute clarity and absolute, deadly cold.
She looked down at her hands, then slowly raised her eyes to meet mine.
"My... my father..." she whispered, her voice trembling not with pain, but with a terrifying, icy rage that shook her entire frame. "Lucas... Archbishop Varos... they made me a prisoner in my own skin."
"They used you, Lyra," I said gently, wiping a stray tear from her cheek with my thumb. "They bled your core for ten years just to make a talentless orphan look like a hero of prophecy."
Lyra sat up slowly from the stone floor of the sunken chamber. She didn’t shrink away from my dark mana; instead, her natural ice energy instinctively reached out, wrapping around my hand like a loyal pet seeking its master.
She looked at me, her full lips parting as a look of profound, obsessive devotion settled into her features. She realized that while the Church and her own family had spent ten years carving away her identity, I had restored her in a single night.
"I am yours, Victor," Lyra said, her voice dropping into a solemn, unwavering pledge as she bowed her head against my chest. "My core, my house’s birthright, my blade... everything belongs to you. Teach me how to make them bleed."

I ran my fingers through her long silver hair, a dark, victorious smile spreading across my face as I looked toward the dark exit of the Sunken Temple.
"Patience, my princess," I purred softly, feeling Aria shift closer behind us, her golden eyes burning with quiet excitement as she leaned against my back. "The Church thinks they own the realm. We’re going to let them keep believing that... right up until we tear their golden towers down from the inside."
