The next morning, as the pale autumn light filtered through the damp masonry of the capital, the time came for our parting.

Lyra stood at the edge of the lower district’s carriage route, her posture straight, her gaze sharp, and her internal frost core humming with absolute stability. Though the night had been spent claiming her body and soul under my complete dominion, duty now demanded discretion.

"You must return to the Frostguard estate before your absence raises further suspicion," I noted, watching her adjust the collar of her traveling cloak.

"I understand, Master," Lyra murmured softly, her eyes lingering on me with an intense, unwavering devotion that completely eclipsed her old persona. "My father still believes I am under the Church’s thumb. I will play the obedient daughter for now... and use their own complacency to dismantle his control from the inside."

Aria stood quietly by my flank, her shadow-daggers concealed once again, giving a subtle nod of approval to the noble heir.

With a final, lingering look of absolute reverence, Lyra offered her formal farewells, bidding us goodbye as she turned her carriage back toward the looming gates of the Frostguard estate to set the final stage of our strategy into motion.

Victor POV

A few days later, After Lyra left to return to the Frostguard estate. I had permitted her departure without hesitation, recognizing it as a necessary prelude to the next phase of my strategy: forcing her father, Duke Frostguard, into absolute submission to House Vance. With Lyra fully bound to my sovereign core, her return to her ancestral home was meant to be the lever that brought her family’s military power under my control.

However, the Duke moved faster than anticipated. Within forty-eight hours of her arrival at the estate, Lyra completely vanished from public view. Reports from my informants in the capital confirmed that her father had erased her official schedule, confined her servants, and issued false reports of her sudden illness to mask her disappearance.

I dispatched Aria immediately to investigate. Operating within the shadows of the capital, my shadow retainer traced the Duke’s movements and uncovered the truth within a day: Lyra was not being held at the family estate. Her father, acting on orders from the Church, had transported her to an ancient, subterranean complex built beneath the city’s drainage channels the Sunken Temple.

Aria secured the structural schematics of the drainage system and discovered an unmapped subterranean conduit that bypassed the primary security wards of the temple complex.

"The main entrance is guarded by a full platoon of Holy Knights, My Lord," Aria reported, kneeling in the shadows of my private study as her tail flicked with silent anticipation. "However, the old aqueduct beneath the eastern sluice gate leads directly into the temple’s lower vaulted chambers. The wards there are ancient, but unmonitored."

"Lead the way," I replied, adjusting the silver cuffs of my dark coat. "It is time to remind the Duke that his daughter no longer belongs to him."

Under the cover of midnight, we reached the heavy iron sluice gate near the riverbank. Aria moved with lethal precision, picking the rusted locking mechanism within seconds. We slipped into the damp, dark passage, where the air grew heavy with the scent of stagnant water and old, pressurized mana.

As we navigated the secret stone passage beneath the sunken palace, the sound of patrol boots echoed against the wet masonry. Four Church guards, clad in silver-and-gold enchanted armor, swept the corridor with raised torches.

"I will clear the path, Lord Victor," Aria whispered, her dark daggers slipping smoothly from her sleeves.

"Do it quickly," I murmured.

She vanished into the dark like a specter. Before the leading guard could raise his torch, a flash of purple mana cut through the gloom. Aria slid behind him, her blade severing his throat seal before spinning around to drive her second dagger straight into the visor of the second guard. The remaining two guards scrambled to draw their broadswords, but I took a single step forward, releasing a microscopic thread of my [True Sovereign Core].

The sudden, crushing density of my aura hit them like a falling stone block. Their knees buckled instantly, slamming into the wet cobblestones with a heavy metallic thud. Before they could cry out, Aria swept across the corridor, her daggers finishing both men without a single sound escaping their lips.

"The lower sanctuary lies just ahead, My Lord," Aria said, wiping her daggers clean against a fallen guard’s cloak. "The barrier ahead is heavy with Holy magic."

I walked past the fallen guards toward the arched stone door at the end of the corridor. The massive oak door was reinforced with heavy iron bands and sealed by a glowing gold rune array a high-tier Church ward meant to suppress dark mana and lock the chamber from the outside.

I did not bother analyzing the magic array. I reached out, my fingers wrapping around the center of the glowing iron latch, and channeled the concentrated weight of my True Sovereign Core into my grip.

*CRACK!*

The holy array flickered violently, its golden runes shattering into useless sparks under the crushing pressure of my obsidian mana. The heavy iron latch snapped in two, and I pushed the doors open with a sharp, echoing thud.

The grand chamber inside was a vast, sunken amphitheater flooded with an inch of stagnant water. Tall basalt pillars held up the vaulted ceiling, and in the center of the hall, suspended over a circular stone platform by heavy anti-magic chains, was Lyra. Her head was bowed, her silver hair damp, and her frost mana suppressed by four glowing binding stakes driven into the floor around her.

I stepped down the stone stairs into the shallow water, my boots making quiet, rhythmic splashes against the floor.

"Victor..." Lyra’s voice was faint, her pale eyes flickering open as she raised her head. A mixture of exhaustion and sudden relief washed over her features. "You... you shouldn’t have come here. My father... the Church set a trap..."

"I told you before, Lyra," I said, my voice carrying clearly through the quiet hall. "What belongs to me is not easily stolen."

Before I could reach the central platform, a harsh, familiar golden light flared from behind the far pillars. Heavy footsteps splashed through the shallow water as a tall figure stepped into the light of the stone braziers, drawing a brilliant, divine longsword from his scabbard.

Lucas von Radiant.

His holy aura surged outward, boiling the shallow water around his boots as he glared at me with pure, unadulterated hatred. His armor bore fresh Church enchantments, and the crest on his chest glowed with forced, artificial power.

"I knew you would come, Victor," Lucas growled, his knuckles turning white around the hilt of his sword. "The Archbishop knew your arrogant pride wouldn’t allow you to let her go. You walked straight into our domain."

"Lucas," I murmured, taking another slow step forward as my dark-violet status panel flickered at the edge of my vision. "It seems your defeat at the Exhibition wasn’t enough to teach you your place. Did the Church have to drag you out of the mud and strap fresh armor onto you just so you could lose again?"

"Shut up!" Lucas roared, his holy mana flaring violently, turning the water around him into white steam. "This time is different! Within this holy sanctuary, your filthy dark mana is suppressed! I will cut you down, free Lyra from your curse, and claim my rightful place!"

I paused in the middle of the flooded hall, resting my hand casually on my hip as I looked down at the screaming hero with a cold, mocking smile.

"Then draw your steel, puppet," I purred softly, my obsidian core surging to life beneath my chest. "Let us see if the Church’s leash can save you tonight."

The flooded amphitheater of the Sunken Temple exploded into motion.

Lucas lunged forward with a furious war cry, his divine longsword blazing with blinding white energy. The holy shockwave parted the shallow water, rushing toward me with lethal velocity. I didn’t draw a blade; instead, a dense aura of midnight-black obsidian mana wrapped around my right hand like a gauntlet.

*CLANG!*

When his divine edge met my bare palm, the resulting shockwave shattered the surface of the stagnant water into a wall of mist. Lucas’s arms trembled under the sheer weight of my pressure, his eyes widening in horror as my dark mana began to eat away at the glowing holy enchantments on his crossguard.

"Is this the power the Church lent you?" I mocked, my voice cutting cleanly through the roar of his blazing aura. "A borrowed spark trying to suffocate a true flame."

"Shut up!" Lucas roared, leveraging his entire body weight to force me back, but his footing slipped on the slick stone beneath the water.

Before he could recover, I twisted my wrist, shattering the alignment of his stance and sending him stumbling sideways into a basalt pillar.

Across the cavern, the auxiliary entrance gates buckled inward with a deafening crash. A wave of heavy armor and raised shields flooded the lower vault a dozen elite Paladins of the Church, summoned as reinforcements to overwhelm us by sheer numbers.

"Master!" Aria’s voice rang out from the shadows near the central platform, her dark daggers gleaming under the torchlight. "Leave the dogs to me!"

Before the vanguard of the paladin platoon could raise their heavy broadswords, Aria vanished into a blur of purple-tinted motion. She didn’t meet them head-on; instead, she danced along the vaulted walls and basalt pillars, her daggers carving precise, disabling strikes into the joints of their enchanted armor.

*Clang! Thud!*

Two paladins hit the shallow water instantly, their knee plates shorn clean off by her razor-sharp blades. The remaining ten paladins swung wildly, trying to catch the elusive shadow assassin, but Aria moved like smoke, her cat-like reflexes letting her slip between their guard with terrifying ease. She kept them entirely pinned, cutting off their advance and preventing a single reinforcement from reaching Lucas’s side.

"Focus on your execution, Master!" Aria purred playfully, sliding behind a heavy-shield bearer and tripping him flat into the water.

Lucas managed to push himself away from the pillar, panting heavily, blood dripping from a shallow gash across his cheek where my aura had grazed him. His holy armor flickered erratically, the forced divine power burning out under the immense drain of combat.

"Damn you... damn you, Victor!" Lucas gasped, clutching his aching shoulder as he realized he was completely outmatched. He cast a desperate glance toward the paladins, only to see half of their unit pinned down or incapacitated by Aria’s relentless assault.

"Your strength is hollow, Lucas," I said, taking a slow, deliberate step forward, the crushing weight of my True Sovereign Core pressing down on the air itself until the water’s surface flattened into absolute stillness. "And your patron God is too far away to hear you scream."

With a flick of my hand, a concentrated spear of obsidian mana shot forward, piercing straight through Lucas’s breastplate. The holy plate shattered into a thousand jagged fragments, sending the hero crashing backward into the water with a violent splash. He spat a mouthful of blood, his sword slipping from his numb fingers and sinking beneath the ripples.

"Retreat!" Lucas shrieked, his voice cracking with humiliation and sheer terror as he scrambled backward on his hands and knees. "Fall back! All units, retreat now!"

The surviving paladins, battered and harried by Aria’s relentless flanking, immediately broke formation. Two of them rushed forward, hauling their groaning leader up by his arms and dragging him toward the escape tunnel leading to the upper surface.

"Are we pursuing, Master?" Aria asked softly, materializing at my side like a shadow, her daggers unspotted by a single drop of blood as she watched the enemy scramble away.

"Let them run," I replied, watching the empty tunnel where Lucas had vanished.

From the darkness of the receding corridor, Lucas’s hateful, trembling voice echoed back through the stone halls:

"Enjoy your small victory, Victor! Next time I return to this damp hole, I won’t be alone! I’ll drag an entire Inquisitorial Crusade down here, and I’ll have you burned at the stake as a heretic while you watch!"

The sound of their desperate, splashing footsteps faded out into the upper levels, leaving the Sunken Temple once again to silence.

I turned my gaze away from the exit and walked toward the central platform, where Lyra hung suspended in her chains, waiting for the next phase to begin.
