"Then I’ll come down and get you." The deep, dark eyes of Joshua Hughes held a trace of pain as he slowly closed them.

"Okay, okay, I’m scared of you now. Give me ten minutes." Avery Jane had really been frightened this time. As she spoke, she explained to others that she needed to step out for a bit and asked a colleague to help her deliver some documents.

Even though the New Year had passed and spring had already arrived, why did his heart feel so cold, as if winter had not yet ended, and in fact had grown even colder....

He closed his eyes and remembered the first time he saw her. She was walking alone in fine clothes through the cemetery at night, such a strange appearance that the scene had been deeply etched into his mind. That night, her fingers traced lightly along the tombstone, where the words "Beloved Lucas Yates" were carved. He was her great love. But what was he? In truth, he was nothing—at most just a man who had used the basest means to forcefully possess her....

The door was gently pushed open and a slender figure slipped inside. Her steps were very light. The man sitting behind the office desk had his deep-set eyes closed. Those eyes held the delicate mystery of the East and the seductive dominance of the West. Joshua had once mentioned that his grandmother was of mixed blood, so in his veins there was, more or less, a trace of foreign genes.

Was he tired? Or troubled? With a company this big, it was bound to be exhausting.

His strong arms pulled her into his embrace, tight, so tight, holding her close. "Avery......" His low, husky voice murmured her name softly by her ear, as if thick with feelings too dense to dissolve. "What’s wrong, Joshua?" Avery could sense something off about him. He was a man of strength, so powerful it was unmatched. Yet in that moment, a fleeting vulnerability crossed his eyes. Yes, though it vanished in an instant, she still caught it.

"Avery, no matter what happens in the future, can you promise me... don’t ever leave me, under any circumstances." Joshua spoke in a low voice. He knew he wasn’t being paranoid; the goddess of fortune would not always favor him. Sooner or later, Avery would remember.

"Why are you suddenly saying that? Did you go bankrupt or something? No way. Didn’t you say the company was doing great last year? Didn’t we get a huge bonus? Was all that a lie?" Avery looked completely incredulous. How could a company this big run into trouble? It seemed impossible. Yet Joshua’s expression didn’t look like he was joking.

"Don’t worry. Even if I go bankrupt, I still won’t leave you." Avery was being held so tightly that she was almost out of breath.

Joshua’s tightly pressed lips slowly relaxed. Bankrupt—she really could imagine that.

Holding her, he greedily breathed in the faint fragrance on her body. "Avery, stay here and keep me company this afternoon while I work." He wrapped his arm snugly around her waist to keep her from leaving, opened the file with one hand. There was always so much to do, and it couldn’t all be pushed to the next day.

"Joshua, is this even appropriate? You’re acting like a tyrant." Avery protested. Who did that? "Why don’t I go sit on the sofa, okay?" This was way too weird. What kind of big boss sat with a female employee on his lap while going through documents? If word got out, how was she supposed to continue working in this company?

"Go on." Joshua loosened his grip on her. With her sitting on him, he really couldn’t concentrate on work. The secretary tactfully brought in some black tea and a few small pastries. Joshua had already given instructions: what kind of snacks Miss Jane liked when she came by. The secretary had long since memorized them and prepared fresh pastries every day, just in case Miss Jane happened to come up to the top floor.

This kind of afternoon was peaceful and lovely. Avery curled up on the sofa like a little cat. On the table was a pot of hot black tea, a plate of delicious cookies, and a few small cakes of different flavors, making her eat to her heart’s content. She flipped through a magazine absentmindedly, and slowly, slowly, her eyelids began to droop.....

The person on the sofa slept deeply, her breathing even. Joshua took a warm blanket and draped it over her. His long fingers lightly brushed the delicate skin of her cheek, and he sighed heavily in his heart. "Avery, if... if you found out about everything, would you still be able to sleep so peacefully by my side?" She was completely defenseless, pure as a child.

The light outside was shifting toward dusk, the beautiful rays filtering through the glass and falling on the man’s sharp, alluring features and tall, strong frame. He knelt beside the sofa and tenderly pressed a light kiss to the forehead of the woman who looked like a sleeping beauty. In an instant, the scene froze, as beautiful and romantic as something out of a fairy tale......

If only this moment could become eternal, how wonderful that would be. He would even trade all his wealth just to keep her time at his side. Yet he still faintly felt that something was wrong, though he couldn’t quite put his finger on it. What exactly was Harper Johnson’s secret?

He knew that this secret would definitely affect his relationship with Avery, and it was bound to be a heavy, devastating blow.
