The first rays of morning sunlight spilled across the rolling hills surrounding Oriel Estate, casting long, pale shadows over the dew-drenched lawns below Ernest’s study.
He hadn’t gone to bed. Not even for an hour.
The drafting table remained buried beneath a white-capped ocean of vellum. At its center rested the pear-shaped pneumatic converter blueprint. Beside it lay the heat-balance flow diagrams of an integrated steelworks.
Every stoichometric equation had been reviewed twice. Every thermodynamic assumption questioned. Every metallurgical shortcut violently eliminated.
Yet the more Ernest studied the drawings through the haze of a three-day sleep deficit, the more convinced he became that he was staring at the wrong problem. He wasn’t looking at a machine. He wasn’t even looking at a factory layout.
He was staring at the skeletal framework of a completely new economic order.

The realization slowly crystallized in his mind, sharp and cold.
"I’m still thinking like a mechanical engineer," Ernest whispered to the quiet room. He leaned back in his leather chair, staring at the ceiling mold. "I need to start thinking like an industrialist."
He pulled a fresh, thick sheet of heavy drafting vellum down onto the center of the desk, sweeping his slide rules and graphite stubs to the side.

Across the very top, he dipped his fountain pen into the ink and wrote five words in heavy, dark block lettering:

Years ago, right after he’d woken up in this world, buying up those seemingly dead mining rights had been the single largest financial gamble of his life. At the time, the local merchant guilds thought he was out of his mind, and even the King assumed he was just securing raw stone and timber for Helmarte’s urban reconstruction. Not even Arthur had understood why he was hoarding iron ore rights when the kingdom was still using wrought-iron horse shoes.
Now, for the first time, the grand design clicked together.
"I already own the raw inputs," he muttered, a sudden surge of adrenaline washing through his fatigue.
Unlike every independent forge and custom foundry across Belfast, he wouldn’t need to waste months negotiating long-term supply contracts with stubborn regional cartels. He wouldn’t have to bid against competing blacksmiths for raw iron bloom, and he wouldn’t have to watch predatory merchants manipulate coal prices the second winter set in.
He controlled the entire supply chain from the rock in the ground to the liquid metal in the ladle.
Raw materials weren’t the bottleneck. Refining physics was the bottleneck.
He turned to the main body of the paper. He drew a single large box on the left margin:

The limestone quarries that had been feeding lime-kilns for cement during the capital’s reconstruction could easily scale production to supply blast furnace fluxing agents. The upstream extraction was ready. It was the downstream processing that needed a total, violent overhaul.
He drew the next node in the chain:

The bituminous coal coming from his northern pits wouldn’t be burned raw in the hearths anymore. Raw coal contained volatile hydrocarbons, moisture, and destructive sulfur that ruined pig iron. Ernest drew a massive, thick-bordered rectangle right in the center of the sheet. Inside it, he wrote:

His pencil moved rapidly now, dragging output lines straight into the heavy manufacturing sectors:

Ernest stared at the network of arrows, whispering, "This isn’t a manufacturing plant..."
A slow, tired laugh escaped his chest.

He rolled the pneumatic converter blueprints into one heavy leather tube. The integrated steelworks layout went into a second. Finally, he rolled up the master corporate blueprint for the Teucher Iron & Steel Corporation, slide-locking the caps in place.
Before he marched into the Royal Palace... before he demanded another Royal Charter... before he sank millions of riels into the most aggressive industrial gamble the kingdom had ever seen... he needed to talk to a practitioner.
An hour later, Ernest’s carriage rattled down the cobblestone avenues of the eastern industrial sector.
The heavy, metallic smell hit him through the carriage window first—the acrid bite of sulfur, hot quenching oil, pulverized anthracite, and red-hot scale flaking off forged iron.
Despite the massive expansion of Helmarte’s manufacturing district over the last five years, one stone structure remained untouched at its core: Hollen’s Forge.
It was larger now, of course. The old coal-fired hearths had been augmented by steam-powered line shafts humming overhead, driving row upon row of mechanical trip-hammers and heavy iron planers that thundered against the stone foundation.
The smiths and machinists recognized him the second he stepped through the soot-stained archway.
"Baron Teucher!"
Several veteran smiths raised their leather aprons in greeting. A few of the older men still remembered the thin, quiet boy who had walked into the forge years ago, reorganized their chaotic ledgers, fixed their thermodynamic flue drafts, and asked bizarre, obsessively detailed questions about carbon saturation in iron bloom.
Ernest greeted them warmly, nodding to the shop floor before heading up the iron stairs toward the master office at the back.
The heavy wooden door was half-open. Inside sat Hollen behind a battered oak desk covered in delivery receipts and material invoices. His hair and beard were almost entirely silver now, and deep crow’s feet carved the skin around his eyes, but his gaze remained as sharp and unforgiving as a hardened cold chisel.
Without even looking up from his ledger, Hollen grunted, "If those leather tubes beneath your arm are full of fresh engineering drawings, Ernest... I already know my workshop budget is about to die a violent death."
Ernest chuckled, stepping into the office and letting the heavy door swing shut behind him. "I’m afraid this one is going to cost a bit more than a workshop budget, old man."
Hollen finally looked up, his pale eyes tracking the three leather document cases tucked firmly under Ernest’s arm. He let out a long, heavy sigh, resting his calloused hands on the desk.
"When you first walked into my shop as a scrawny kid, you reorganized my accounts," Hollen muttered, a faint, nostalgic glint in his eyes. "Then you tore up my floorboards to install forced-draft hearths. Then you talked me into replacing my best smiths with steam-driven power hammers."
He narrowed his eyes, leaning forward over his ledger. "What crazy stunt are you pulling now?"
Ernest walked up to the oak desk, unbuckled the first leather strap, and let the master blueprint unroll across the wooden surface, anchoring the top with Hollen’s heavy iron paperweight.
He looked the old forge master dead in the eye, a sharp, confident smile breaking across his face.
"I’m not upgrading a forge, Hollen," Ernest said quietly. "I’m building the kingdom’s first steel empire."
