The reconstruction of Helmarte had transformed the capital from a medieval relic into a modern municipality.

But Ernest wasn’t looking at what existed. He was looking at the silent voids—at everything that still didn’t exist.

His gaze drifted beyond the brick workshops toward the blue, mist-shrouded hills north of the capital. Those mountains held massive deposits of high-grade hematite ore, enough to supply generations of heavy industry. Further west lay the deep-shaft coal mines his company had spent three years expanding, cutting through shale to reach rich seams of bituminous coal. To the south, new copper and flux stone quarries were steadily ramping up output each season.

The raw resources were waiting in the dirt. The transportation network to connect them was drawn on his vellum. The machinery had already begun its mechanical evolution.

Only one link was missing to weld the entire system together: Steel.

Not brittle pig iron straight from a blast hearth. Not labor-intensive wrought iron hand-puddled and hammered twenty pounds at a time by exhausting human labor. High-tensile, low-carbon steel—produced in massive, multi-ton heats fast enough to lay hundreds of miles of heavy railway, build high-pressure locomotives, span river gorges with riveted girders, and erect the structural bones of modern cities.

The kingdom possessed brilliant craftsmen. It lacked industrial throughput.

The carriage slowed before a squat, weathered stone complex. Unlike the sprawling factories springing up around it, the old forge hadn’t tried to look modern or impressive. Its thick granite walls had blackened over decades under soot and furnace smoke. Massive timber doors stood wide open despite the chill morning air, allowing the rhythmic, floor-shaking thud-thud-thud of steam trip-hammers to spill into the street.

Ernest smiled, stepping down from the carriage. Some places never lost their soul.

The familiar, acrid scent hit him immediately—the sharp bite of sulfur, coal smoke, hot quenching oil, and fresh iron scale flaking off red-hot blooms. It was the smell that had defined his early years in this world.

Years ago, he had walked into this exact building carrying nothing more than borrowed thermodynamic principles and memory from another lifetime. Now he returned carrying the master blueprints for an industrial revolution.

Inside, the forge was a storm of organized mechanical chaos. Leather drive belts suspended from long overhead line-shafts whirred continuously under the steady drive of a central steam engine. Heavy forging presses slammed down onto glowing yellow billets, showering sparks over the dirt floor, while young apprentices darted between coal furnaces carrying tongs almost as long as themselves.

Many of the veteran smiths recognized him the second he crossed the threshold.

"Baron Teucher!"

Several paused, wiping sweat from their soot-stained foreheads to offer respectful nods.

A gray-haired smith working near the main power hammer laughed, leaning on his tongs. "Still carrying those rolled drafting tubes everywhere you go, I see!"

Ernest chuckled, adjusting the leather straps beneath his arm. "Old habits, Thomas."

"Aye, but your ’old habits’ usually mean three months of unpaid overtime and re-tooling the whole shop floor!"

"They also usually come with a fifty percent wage increase once the line starts running," Ernest pointed out.

The old smith scratched his beard, grinning. "...Fair point, my Lord."

Laughter spread through the bay before the crew returned to the rhythmic pounding of their work.

Ernest walked deeper into the forge, his eyes scanning the shop floor with practiced scrutiny. Nothing escaped his notice: the thirty-ton steam hammer installed three years ago, the forced-draft ventilation ducts sweeping smoke out through the roof, the heavy overhead traveling crane running on iron rails near the rafters.

Most of those upgrades had started as crude charcoal sketches on his own drafting table. Hollen had turned them into real, working steel.

He reached the timber office tucked into the rear wall of the workshop. The door stood half-open.

Inside sat the man who had given Ernest his first real lesson in practical metallurgy: Hollen.

The old forge master was reviewing material ledgers under the yellow light streaming through a narrow glass window. His beard had gone almost entirely silver, and his broad shoulders leaned slightly under the weight of years, but the eyes behind his reading spectacles remained as sharp as cold-rolled steel.

Only then did he finally look up. His sharp gaze immediately locked onto the three leather document tubes tucked beneath Ernest’s arm.

He let out a long, heavy sigh, taking off his spectacles. "...That fills me with deep professional concern."

Ernest laughed, stepping into the room. "I haven’t even unbuckled the straps yet."

"You don’t need to." Hollen leaned back in his creaking oak chair, folding his thick arms across his leather apron. "I know that look. It’s the look that says you spent seventy-two hours straight drinking cold coffee and running equations."

He pointed a calloused finger at the leather tubes. "And whenever you get that look... the kingdom’s entire manufacturing base gets turned upside down."

Ernest set the heavy tubes down on the desk with a solid thud. "I’m afraid you have good reason to be nervous this time."

"I figured as much."

Hollen stood up, crossing to the front of the desk. His hands—scarred and calloused by forty years of handling white-hot iron—untied the first leather buckle. He pulled out the primary sheet and unrolled it across his desk, anchoring the corners with a pair of brass calipers.

His eyes narrowed instantly.

The pear-shaped pneumatic converter dominated the vellum. Heavy forged trunnions, double-walled cross-sections, an internal fireclay refractory lining, and a radial grid of multi-hole tuyeres stamped across the bottom wind-box. Dozens of dense thermodynamic calculations and fluid-flow vectors crowded the wide margins.

Hollen stood dead still, studying the sheet in absolute silence. His eyes tracked every measurement, every tolerance callout, every structural note.

Finally, he raised his head, looking up at Ernest through his bushy eyebrows. "I’ve worked metal for forty years. I’ve never seen a furnace shaped like a giant iron pear."

"Neither has anyone else in this kingdom," Ernest said smoothly.

"What is it?"

"A pneumatic steel converter. It converts molten pig iron directly into low-carbon steel in fifteen minutes."

Hollen frowned, leaning back down to inspect the bottom air chamber. "A converter? You’re talking about refining iron?"

"Yes."

"Ernest..." Hollen’s thick thumb traced the air passages leading to the tuyeres at the base. "You’re showing me air lines plugged into the bottom of a hearth vessel. You’re planning to blow cold air straight through a liquid bath of molten pig iron?"

"Precisely."

"It sounds completely insane. You’ll chill the heat. The whole bath will freeze into a thirty-ton lump of cold-short pig iron before the slag even forms."

"The dissolved carbon, silicon, and manganese in the pig iron act as fuel," Ernest explained, leaning over the table. "The oxidation reaction is intensely exothermic. The temperature won’t drop—it will spike by nearly five hundred degrees. The impurities burn themselves out of the iron. You don’t need external fuel once the blow starts."

Hollen grunted, staring at the drawing with a mixture of skepticism and deep mechanical curiosity. "Does the chemical balance actually hold up, or is this just theoretical math?"

Ernest smirked. "It works. I’ll stake the entire Teucher industrial budget on it."

"You usually do," Hollen muttered. He looked at the drawing for another long moment, shaking his head. "I distrust certainty, Ernest. But your crazy math hasn’t failed us yet."

Without another word, Hollen reached for the second leather tube, unbuckling the strap and rolling out the second sheet.

This drawing looked entirely different. There were no machine components, no pressure vessel geometries, and no valve tolerances. It was a massive macro-level flowchart made of thick rectangles, directional arrows, and operational inputs.

Hollen’s expression shifted rapidly as he read—from mild interest to confusion, and finally to outright shock.

He looked up, blinking. "What am I looking at? A regional trade agreement?"

"A company structure," Ernest replied.

Hollen shook his head. "No. That’s not a company layout."

"It’s a vertically integrated corporation," Ernest corrected.

He traced the feedback loops with his finger. Nothing existed in isolation. Raw iron ore, coal, and limestone entered one side of the system; finished steel rails, high-pressure boiler plates, and heavy structural I-beams came out the other. No independent contractors. No middleman markups. No competing foundry owners haggling over alloy quality or delivery schedules.

Hollen slowly rested both palms flat on the oak desk, staring at the sheet.

"...This isn’t a forge, Ernest," he whispered. "It’s not even a foundry."

"No, it’s not."

"This is an entire industrial ecosystem."

"Exactly," Ernest said, his voice quiet, firm, and absolute.

Hollen remained silent for a long, heavy minute, his eyes tracing the flow of matter across the paper. Finally, he looked up, asking the one core question that mattered: "Why? Why build something this massive all at once?"

Ernest walked over to the narrow window overlooking the bustling workshop floor.

Down below, teams of sweat-drenched smiths were working in batches. One crew heated a billet in a coal furnace; another crew waited for it to reach working temperature before dragging it over to the power hammer; a third group waited to machine the forged piece. It was skilled, meticulous, honorable work.

And it was violently, hopelessly inadequate for the century ahead.

"How much finished structural iron does your forge produce in a good month, Hollen?" Ernest asked without turning around.

"On a peak month with both shifts running full blast? Nearly two hundred metric tons."

"And you run one of the largest, most mechanized forging operations in Helmarte."

"We are the largest," Hollen said defensively.

Ernest turned back around, resting his hands on the window sill. "I’ve spent the last three days calculating the steel requirements for the National Railway project."

Hollen folded his arms, his eyebrows knitting together. "And?"

"The first phase alone—just linking Helmarte to the northern coalfields and the eastern ports—will consume eighty thousand tons of high-grade steel rail."

The room went dead silent.

Hollen searched Ernest’s face for any sign of a miscalculation or an engineer’s exaggeration. He found none. Just cold, relentless arithmetic.

"Eighty... thousand tons?" Hollen repeated, his voice dropping an octave. "That’s more metal than every forge, hearth, and foundry in the entire Kingdom of Belfast produces combined over three years!"

"I know," Ernest said flatly. "And that’s just the track. It doesn’t account for the locomotives, the freight hoppers, the river bridges, or the factory expansions that will follow once cheap transport exists. If we try to build a modern railway using traditional custom foundries, we’ll bankrupt the royal treasury and run out of iron before the first fifty miles are laid."

He stepped up to the desk, pointing to the master chart of the Teucher Iron & Steel Corporation.

"We can’t just build a train, Hollen. And we can’t just expand your forge. We have to build an engine that creates the metal itself."

Hollen slowly exhaled a long breath, staring down at the blueprint of the pear-shaped pneumatic converter.

For the first time in forty years of shaping iron with his bare hands, the veteran forge master realized he wasn’t looking at a blueprint for a new piece of machinery.

He was looking at the birth certificate of an industrial empire.
