Hollen remained completely motionless, his thick, calloused hands gripping the edge of his oak desk like an anchor. His pale eyes drifted back and forth between the engineering schematic of the pear-shaped pneumatic converter and the massive, sprawling organizational flowchart laid out beside it.
For nearly half a century, Hollen had earned his living shaping iron with sweat, coal, and muscle. He had watched young boys enter as terrified apprentices and leave decades later as master smiths. He had watched open charcoal hearths yield to forced-draft coking furnaces. He had reluctantly allowed steam-driven machinery onto his shop floor only after Ernest had patiently convinced him that machines wouldn’t replace a craftsman’s eye—they would simply give his arms the force of fifty men.
Every single shift had felt revolutionary at the time.
Compared to the sheets of vellum currently covering his desk, those past forty years felt like a minor footnote.
"You aren’t planning an expansion for my forge, Ernest," Hollen said, his voice low and gravelly, barely cutting through the thrum of the machinery outside.
"No," Ernest replied smoothly.
"You aren’t proposing another custom foundry either."
"No."
The old forge master looked up, his gaze locking onto Ernest’s eyes. "...You’re proposing to bury the entire existing industry."
Ernest nodded once, slow and deliberate. "Not bury it, Hollen. Evolve it."
Hollen let out a short, dry snort. "You always pick the polite words for when you’re about to smash something to pieces."
He reached out, his thick index finger tracing the red ink vectors connecting the nodes on the master corporate blueprint.
Hematite Ore > Coking Ovens > Blast Furnace > Pneumatic Converters > Blooming Mill > Rail Yard.
The entire material pipeline flowed continuously, an unbroken thermodynamic line from the dirt in the ground to a finished sixty-pound steel rail. No independent job-shops. No teamsters dragging pig iron bars across the county to be remelted in a cupola furnace. No months wasted haggling over custom alloy specifications with stubborn merchant guilds.
Everything under one corporate roof. One command structure. One unified industrial purpose.
Hollen looked up from the page, his brow furrowed deeply. "Do you actually grasp what you’ve mapped out here?"
"I do."
"This isn’t a company layout, Ernest."
"No," Ernest agreed.
"It’s a self-contained industrial city."
A faint, confident smirk touched the corner of Ernest’s mouth. "I prefer the technical term: an integrated steelworks."
"Call it whatever fancy term you like," Hollen grunted, leaning back until his chair groaned. "It’s still larger and more expensive than any single project this kingdom has ever attempted. You’ll need four multi-story blast furnaces just to keep the liquid volume up."
"I know."
"High-temperature coking batteries."
"I know."
"Continuous-pour rolling mills."
"I know."
"A workforce of thousands of specialized steelworkers, melters, and machinists."
"I know, Hollen."
Hollen let out a long, weary sigh, rubbing the bridge of his nose. "You keep saying ’I know.’"
"Because I’ve spent three days running the operational logistics."
The old forge master leaned forward over the desk, his expression hardening into intense, paternal seriousness. "No, Ernest. You know the engineering. You know the fluid dynamics, the stress-strain curves, and the stoichiometric equations."
He gestured sharply toward the window overlooking the chaotic shop floor. "I’m asking if you actually understand what it takes to manage the human beings required to run a monster like this."
The question hung heavy in the air, unyielding and sharp.
Ernest didn’t answer immediately. He turned away from the desk and stepped over to the glass window, looking down at the workshop below.
Down in the soot-stained bay, smiths and power-hammer operators moved in a synchronized, unwritten rhythm. One crew pulled a glowing, yellow-hot billet from a heating furnace; another maneuvered the overhead hoist; a third operated the steam valve on the trip-hammer. Every man knew his exact role. Every movement was the product of decades of passed-down trade knowledge.
The forge functioned not merely because the steam engine had eighty horsepower, but because Hollen knew every man on the floor by his first name. He knew which foreman could manage an overnight heat without burning the metal, which machinist could turn a shaft within three-thousandths of an inch, and which coal supplier tried to mix slate into his shipments.
The machinery was just cold iron. The people were the actual system.
Without turning around, Ernest spoke softly. "I’ve been staring at that exact problem all night."
Hollen waited in silence.
"I realized something fundamental about how I’ve been operating," Ernest continued, watching a cloud of white steam vent across the rafters below.
"What’s that?"
"I’ve spent the last five years building separate, isolated companies."
Hollen raised an eyebrow. "Isolated?"
"My coal mining operations. My timber concessions. My construction firms. My machine tool works," Ernest said, turning back around to face the old man. "Each one was created to solve an immediate, isolated bottleneck during Helmarte’s reconstruction."
Hollen frowned. "And?"
Ernest walked back to the desk, tapping the upper left corner of the organizational chart. "I already own the high-grade hematite deposits in the northern ridge."
His finger slid to the next box. "I already own the deep-shaft bituminous coal mines."
Then another. "I already own the limestone quarries."
Hollen remained quiet, listening intently.
"Those mining divisions have expanded their throughput every single quarter," Ernest explained, his voice rising with quiet intensity. "They already extract more raw tonnage than the kingdom’s traditional foundries can physically process. The moment we start laying railway track, that demand isn’t going to double—it’s going to scale exponentially. So will the demand for steamships, structural I-beams, and heavy machinery."
He rested his palm flat against the vellum. "The raw resources are no longer the bottleneck. The geology is solved."
Hollen nodded slowly, staring at the map. "Aye... I suppose it is."
"The bottleneck," Ernest said, his index finger tapping the thick-bordered box labeled Pneumatic Steel Converter Works, "is everything that happens between the pithead and the finished product."
Hollen’s sharp eyes tracked the flow of the diagram again. "You built the entire resource foundation before you even designed the machine that needed it."
"I did."
"And not a single merchant guild master in the capital noticed what you were doing."
"They thought I was just hoarding raw commodities for municipal building contracts," Ernest said with a dry, quiet chuckle.
Hollen let out a sudden, roaring laugh that ended in a rough cough. "You crazy bastard. You planned this years ago, didn’t you?"
"I planned the resource capture years ago," Ernest clarified. "Designing the locomotive last week was just the catalyst that forced me to connect the nodes."
Silence returned to the small office, save for the deep, rhythmic thud of the shop outside.
Hollen’s gaze drifted toward the window, looking out over the glowing fires of his shop. "When you first bought up those mining concessions... I told Arthur you were overextending your capital."
"So did everyone else," Ernest remarked.
"Everyone assumed the boom would collapse once the capital’s streets were paved," Hollen murmured, a faint, nostalgic smile touching his eyes. "Nobody imagined you were quietly prepping the ground for an industrial revolution."
Ernest folded his arms. "Helmarte was never the end goal, Hollen. It was just the proof of concept. The kingdom trusted us with urban reconstruction because they could physically see the new avenues and sewers. Now they’ll trust us with industrialization."
Hollen turned back to the primary blueprint, squinting at the cross-section of the pear-shaped vessel. "I still hate the look of this machine."
Ernest grinned. "I’d be worried if you liked it right away."
"It goes against forty years of my metallurgical instincts," Hollen grunted, tracing the bottom wind-box with his thumb. "Blowing cold air into molten iron feels like a recipe for a cold-short disaster."
"So did steam-driven trip-hammers when we first brought them in."
"Aye," Hollen admitted quietly, rubbing his beard. "My instincts told me power hammers would destroy a smith’s touch. They didn’t. I thought standardized, interchangeable parts would ruin fine craftsmanship. They made our fit-and-finish ten times more consistent."
He looked around his office, gesturing vaguely at the heavy machinery humming beyond the timber wall. "I thought machine tools belonged in foreign workshops. Now I couldn’t keep this forge solvent for a week without them."
He locked eyes with Ernest, his expression softening into a look of deep, quiet respect. "So I’ve learned one hard rule over the last five years, Ernest."
"What’s that?"
"Whenever you walk into my office carrying rolled-up drafting tubes..." Hollen smiled faintly, "...I should stop arguing about whether the math works."
Ernest’s grin broadened. "And start asking?"
"Start asking how many tons of metal we’re going to pour," Hollen replied.
The room settled into a comfortable, quiet rhythm. After a moment, Ernest took a step closer to the desk, his voice dropping into a serious, deliberate tone.
"Hollen."
The old forge master looked up.
"I can’t build this steelworks alone," Ernest said directly.
"You’ve got Arthur for the legal charters and the capital accounts," Hollen noted.
"I don’t mean financially or legally," Ernest said, shaking his head. "I need someone who actually knows the soul of iron. Someone who will call me an idiot to my face when my theoretical math ignores a practical shop-floor reality. Someone who can take these abstract drawings..." He tapped the vellum. "...and actually manage the men who are going to build the furnaces."
Hollen studied Ernest carefully, his brow furrowing slightly. "You’re asking for my technical advice as a consultant?"
"No," Ernest said firmly. "I’m asking for far more than advice."
He reached out, taking the master organizational chart of the TEUCHER IRON & STEEL CORPORATION, and rotated it one hundred eighty degrees so it faced the old forge master directly.
At the very top sat the corporate title in bold, dark ink. Branching down from it were the various divisions: Mining, Coking, Blast Furnaces, Steelmaking, Rolling Mills, Engineering, and Distribution.
Right at the apex of the operational tree—sitting directly beneath the executive board, commanding every furnace, mill, and shop floor in the entire enterprise—was a large, prominent rectangular box.
It was completely blank.
Hollen’s sharp eyes caught it instantly. "You left the Chief Operating position empty."
"I did."
"Why?"
"Because I wanted to offer it to the right man before I wrote the title down," Ernest said quietly.
Hollen blinked, a look of profound confusion crossing his weathered face.
Ernest picked up his graphite pencil from the blotter, holding it out toward the old man.
"I can design the pneumatic converter, Hollen. I can run the thermodynamic equations, calculate the gear ratios on the rolling stands, and estimate our quarterly coal consumption," Ernest said, his voice ringing with absolute clarity. "But I cannot run a floor with four blast furnaces and three thousand steelworkers. And I have no intention of spending the next twenty years standing on a pouring platform with a pair of pyrometer goggles."
Slowly, inexorably, the true weight of what Ernest was asking began to register in Hollen’s mind. His eyes widened ever so slightly, his breath catching in his chest.
"...Ernest," Hollen rasped, his voice barely a whisper. "You’re asking me to run the entire steel industry."
"I’m asking you to be the General Director of Production," Ernest corrected with a warm, confident smile. "I build the machines. You run the empire."
Silence descended upon the timber office once more.
Outside, the forty-ton steam hammers continued their relentless, thundering cadence—thud, thud, thud—pounding red-hot iron into shape, completely oblivious to the fact that inside a quiet room overlooking the bay, an old forge master and the young engineer he had once taken a chance on had just rewritten the economic destiny of the entire kingdom.
Hollen looked down at the empty white box on the chart. Then he looked up at Ernest.
And for the first time in his long, stubborn life, the master of iron found himself completely speechless.
