Two years changed Belfast more than the previous twenty.

The muddy construction corridor that had once stretched north from Helmarte was gone. The survey stakes were gone. The temporary camps were disappearing, and the endless lines of horse-drawn wagons carrying timber, stone, tools, food, and steel had thinned to a trickle.

In their place ran two parallel ribbons of steel.

They began at the newly constructed Helmarte Central Station, crossed the northern districts of the capital, passed through agricultural plains, climbed through carefully graded valleys, spanned rivers on massive stone-and-steel bridges, and continued into the industrial heartland of northern Belfast.

Two hundred forty-seven point eight kilometers. The Northern Line was complete. Not open for revenue traffic—not yet—but physically finished.

Ernest stood on the main platform of Helmarte Central Station with his hands buried inside the pockets of his long wool coat. The morning air carried the sharp bite of early winter, and a thin mist hung over the tracks. He stared north.

For nearly two years, there had always been something unfinished: a missing bridge abutment, an incomplete cutting, a section waiting for ballast, a shipment of rails delayed by rolling mill schedules, a drainage culvert, a retaining wall, a station platform, a switch yard, or a telegraph connection. Always something.

Now, there was nothing left to build. The rails simply continued past the end of the platform, past the signal mast, past the northern edge of Helmarte, and onward into the countryside.

Ernest almost found the sight unsettling.

Samuel Wright approached from behind, carrying a thick leather folder. "You’ve been staring at that signal mast for ten minutes."

Ernest didn’t turn. "I’m inspecting."

"From here?" Samuel smiled.

"Visual inspection."

"Of two hundred and forty-seven kilometers?"

"I have good eyesight."

Samuel laughed softly, stopping beside Ernest at the platform edge. For a moment, neither spoke.

They had both aged under the strain. Two years wasn’t enough to grey a young man’s hair, but Ernest could see the toll in the lines around Samuel’s eyes. His coat was better than the dusty field jacket he had worn during the early location surveys, but his heavy work boots remained. Samuel had spent most of the past two years living in the mud, rain, heat, and cold—managing thousands of laborers, hundreds of sub-contractors, and millions of cubic yards of earthwork.

And somehow, they had finished.

Samuel held out the leather folder. "Final civil construction report."

Ernest finally looked away from the tracks, taking the report. "Everything?"

"Everything," Samuel said. "Track formation complete and aligned. Ballast compacted to depth. Drainage passes final inspection. Every major bridge load-tested. Culverts cleared. Telegraph lines operational along the full route. Locomotive watering stations and coaling depots stocked. All station buildings structurally finished. Signal masts installed on operational sectors, and manual block procedures approved for the full line."

Ernest opened the report. Page after page of numbers, measurements, inspection signatures, track geometry profiles, bridge deflection load tests, and telegraph continuity logs filled the ledger.

Samuel watched him scan the pages. "You know you could simply say congratulations."

"Why?" Ernest asked, glancing up. "Because we’re finished?"

"Because we built a national railway," Samuel said.

"We finished building it," Ernest corrected, closing the folder. "Now we have to prove it works under operational load."

Samuel let out a soft sigh. "There he is. The eternal engineer."

The Northern Line had transformed more than the physical landscape; it had transformed the population. Two years earlier, Belfast had not possessed a single railway engineer, signalman, or track inspector. The professions had not existed.

Now they did. Track inspectors walked the permanent way every morning carrying gauges and notebooks. Signalmen operated mechanical interlocking levers in timber signal boxes. Stationmasters studied formal operating rules. Telegraph clerks logged railway message traffic. Maintenance gangs patrolled assigned territories, while bridge inspectors maintained structural ledgers for individual spans.

Locomotive crews, firemen, fitters, boilermakers, wheelwrights, brake inspectors, switchmen, and dispatchers—hundreds of specialized roles had been created out of necessity.

That realization pleased Ernest almost as much as the steel track itself. Machinery could be copied by competitors; institutional technical knowledge was far harder to replicate. Belfast was learning how to run an industrial civilization.

A sharp metallic hammering echoed from the far end of the station yard. Ernest looked over to see several track workers adjusting a turnout switch near the entrance to the freight yard. One man checked the point gap with a gauge, another operated the throw lever, and a third inspected the locking pin.

Nobody looked toward Ernest. Nobody needed his intervention. Two years ago, every unusual technical problem eventually reached his desk at Oriel Estate. Now, the railway was beginning to solve its own operational problems.

"What is that expression?" Samuel asked, watching him.

"I don’t have an expression," Ernest said.

"You look slightly less annoyed than usual."

Ernest gave him a flat look.

Samuel grinned. "That’s the one."

Helmarte Central Station itself had changed the surrounding city beyond recognition. When construction began, the site had been an empty stretch of pasture on the northern outskirts of the capital. Now, a massive stone-and-steel terminal dominated the district.

Ernest had deliberately rejected lavish architectural ornamentation. The building was grand, but strictly functional. A broad central concourse connected the city entrance to six covered platforms. Large mechanical clocks hung above the ticket windows, waiting rooms lined the western wall, and dedicated telegraph offices handled cargo documentation and transit dispatches.

Behind the passenger terminal lay an even larger asset: the central freight yard. Tracks split and merged in complex fans of turnouts. Sidings ran directly beside storage warehouses, coaling stages occupied the eastern perimeter, and livestock pens sat at a comfortable distance downwind.

Warehouses had already been leased to major merchant firms despite the line not yet being open for commercial traffic. Everyone understood what was coming. It was impossible to conceal a two-hundred-and-forty-kilometer railway.

The rattle of carriage wheels announced new arrivals. Hollen Vane stepped down from a covered carriage, his white hair gleaming under his hat. He looked older, but he carried himself with the same unyielding strength he had possessed when running his small iron forge. Arthur Pendelton climbed down after him, immediately checking his pocket watch against the station clock.

"We are early," Arthur announced, stepping onto the platform.

"You complained about our speed the entire drive," Hollen snorted.

"Because Ernest told us to be on the platform at seven o’clock," Arthur replied, pointing toward Ernest. "It is currently six-forty."

Ernest checked his own pocket watch. "Excellent. Punctuality is the foundation of railway operations."

Arthur stared at him. "That is not an apology."

"I wasn’t offering one."

Hollen let out a deep laugh. "Two years of building this monster, and he has only grown more insufferable."

The four men stood together on the platform: Ernest, Hollen, Arthur, and Samuel. Each had provided an indispensable pillar. Ernest had provided the technical vision and chemistry; Samuel had forced the right-of-way across mountains and rivers; Hollen had turned raw metallurgy into mass-manufactured steel; and Arthur had managed the capital structures that prevented bankruptcy.

Arthur looked down the long, empty track. "So... when does it arrive?"

Ernest checked his watch again. "Seven minutes."

"From the basin machine works?" Hollen asked.

"Yes."

"Under its own steam?"

Ernest looked at the old founder. "How else?"

Arthur frowned, shifting uncomfortably. "I still dislike this entire concept."

"You haven’t even seen the completed assembly yet, Arthur," Ernest noted.

"I have read the boiler pressure test certificates," Arthur said firmly. "I am simply pointing out that you have constructed a high-pressure steel vessel, filled it with boiling water, placed a coal furnace directly beneath it, set the entire apparatus on iron wheels, and now intend to travel across the kingdom inside it."

Samuel looked thoughtful. "When you phrase it like that, Arthur, it does sound slightly precarious."

"Do not encourage him, Samuel," Ernest said.

Hollen was staring north down the main line. "You changed the design, didn’t you, Ernest?"

Ernest offered a faint smile. "The locomotive evolved."

"I saw your original drawings two years ago," Hollen said. "Four driving wheels. Coupled 0-4-0 arrangement."

"That was the baseline demonstration design," Ernest explained.

"The machine I saw on the assembly floor at the works last week has six coupled driving wheels," Hollen noted. "An 0-6-0 layout."

Samuel looked between them, surprised. "You didn’t show me the final locomotive?"

"I wanted today’s operational trial to be informative," Ernest said.

"I built two hundred and forty-seven kilometers of track for you," Samuel said, "and you hid the engine from me?"

"I preserved the element of technical surprise," Ernest corrected.

"You’re a menace," Samuel muttered.

Arthur nodded in agreement. "On that, the legal department concurs."

Hollen chuckled, looking down the tracks. "Why six drivers, Ernest?"

"Adhesion," Ernest replied concisely. "The original four-driver design was conservative—easy to build, lightweight, and perfect for proving the mechanical linkage. But the Northern Line is not a demonstration track. It has zero-point-nine-percent gradients, heavy industrial freight, and long-distance runs. A locomotive requires sufficient weight on its driven axles to convert cylinder power into tractive effort without slipping. Two driving axles became three, the boiler diameter expanded, the cylinder bore increased, and the tender capacity was doubled."

"In short," Hollen smiled, "engineering reality replaced drafting paper."

"Precisely."

A telegraph clerk suddenly rushed out from the platform office, carrying a fresh message slip. "Baron Teucher!"

Ernest took the paper and read the brief dispatch. A small, satisfied smile touched his lips.

"Dispatch?" Samuel asked.

Ernest handed the paper over. Samuel read it aloud to the group: "Test Engine Belfast Number One departed Machine Works Junction at six forty-three. Running light with tender. All systems nominal."

Arthur checked the station clock. "How far away is that junction?"

"Close," Ernest said.

Hollen tilted his head, listening intently. Everyone fell silent.

For a few seconds, there was only the quiet hum of the capital waking up. Then, a faint, rhythmic sound drifted through the morning mist.

Chuff... Chuff...

Silence. Then again, louder.

Chuff... Chuff... Chuff-chuff...

Arthur turned his gaze north. The rhythmic beat grew rapidly in volume and intensity.

CHUFF... CHUFF... CHUFF...

Then, a sound echoed across Helmarte that no inhabitant of the kingdom had ever heard before: a deep, pressurized, multi-toned steam whistle tore through the cold air.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-OOOOOO!

The entire station seemed to freeze. Track workers dropped their tools, clerks rushed to the glass windows, and people on the street outside stopped in their tracks. Horses pulling supply carts near the station entrance jerked nervously against their reins.

Arthur’s eyes widened. Hollen grinned, and Samuel stared intently into the mist.

A massive dark shape materialized through the gray vapor. Black smoke rolled skyward from a tall stack, white steam hissed from lower drain cocks, and polished steel side rods flashed in rhythmic, powerful arcs.

CHUFF-CHUFF-CHUFF-CHUFF!

The machine emerged fully into the station approach.
