Chapter 194: Prelude to the First Line
By the end of the first month, the operational transformation inside the Teucher Iron & Steel works was absolute.
The vast rail storage yard outside the mill was no longer an empty expanse of graded gravel. Long, symmetrical stacks of dark-gray steel rails gleamed under the morning sun—hundreds of heavy eight-meter sections arranged neatly by heat number, fully inspected, and stamped with official acceptance marks.
Heavy overhead gantry cranes lifted bundle after bundle onto reinforced heavy-freight wagons. For now, large teams of draft horses handled the final leg of transport, hauling the steel bundles out through the main gates toward the southern railhead.
Ernest stood on an elevated inspection gallery overlooking the yard, accompanied by Hollen. Below them, another batch of rails emerged from the finishing building on motorized rollers.
The atmosphere on the factory floor had changed completely. There were no longer crowds of anxious engineers surrounding every cooling bed, nor was Ernest personally measuring every web thickness with calipers.
The plant was developing its own operational rhythm. Machine operators understood their pass speeds, foremen managed guide tolerances, and quality inspectors rejected non-conforming rails without seeking managerial permission. The Teucher Iron & Steel Corporation was behaving like an industrial titan rather than an experimental laboratory.
Hollen handed Ernest the monthly production summary. "Read the bottom line, Ernest."
Ernest scanned down the column of figures:

"The roller straightener helped as well," Hollen noted, leaning against the iron gallery railing. "Are you going to celebrate, or simply find another bottleneck to worry about?"
"I’ll schedule a celebration for when the first locomotive reaches the northern mines," Ernest replied dryly.
He looked out toward the northern horizon. Far beyond the city outskirts, Samuel’s construction divisions had completed the first continuous eleven-kilometer section of compacted sub-ballast. Timber ties were stacked, drainage ditches were cleared, and the roadbed was waiting.
Three days later, the first massive steel convoy departed the basin works, bound for Kilometer Zero.
Dozens of heavy timber wagons, their iron axles creaking under the weight of bundled steel rails, moved down the paved industrial highway. Teamsters shouted, leather harnesses snapped, and draft horses strained against their collars.
Hollen stood beside Ernest at the gatehouse as the convoy rolled past. "A magnificent sight, isn’t it?"
Ernest watched the heavy wooden wheels churn through the dust. "It is an operational absurdity."
Hollen chuckled. "Using draft horses to haul the steel rails that will eliminate draft horses?"
"It offends my sense of mechanical efficiency," Ernest admitted. "However, it is a temporary humiliation."
He stepped closer to the lead wagon, resting his gloved hand against the cool, hard steel of a top rail. Stamped clearly into the web was the permanent mark:

The convoy pressed onward toward the primary construction railhead at the edge of Helmarte, where timber sleepers had been laid out across the gray stone ballast.
The following morning shortly after sunrise, Ernest’s carriage arrived at Kilometer Zero.
He stepped down onto the fresh gravel roadbed. The scene before him was stripped of all ceremony: a broad, level ribbon of crushed stone stretched north into the morning fog. Double rows of creosote-treated timber sleepers crossed the stone at precise seven-hundred-millimeter intervals.
Standing alongside the roadbed were hundreds of civil laborers, surveyors, trackmen, and civil engineers. Stacks of Teucher steel rails lay neatly along the ditch margins.
Samuel Wright stepped forward, holding a heavy iron track-gauge bar. "You are three minutes late, Baron."
"A carriage axle required lubrication," Ernest replied, stepping onto the ballast. "I trust the tracklayers haven’t mutinied?"
"They refused to spike the first rail until you arrived," Samuel smiled, handing him the heavy steel gauge. "We claimed it was out of respect, but mostly we wanted you to do the heavy swinging."
The gathered crowd of workers let out a good-natured laugh.
Ernest walked over to the first pair of steel rails resting loosely across the timber sleepers. He crouched down, placing the notched steel gauge bar between the inner faces of the rail heads.
"East rail is two millimeters tight," Ernest called out.
Two trackmen stepped forward with heavy iron lining bars, levering the rail outward until it clinked sharply against the gauge notch.
Ernest checked the reading again. The bar seated perfectly into the notches—exactly 1,435 millimeters. The national standard gauge, established in the King’s cabinet weeks ago, was now fixed in solid steel.
Ernest stood up. Samuel handed him a heavy steel spiking adze and a square iron screw-spike.
Ernest positioned the spike over the tie plate hole, raised the heavy hammer over his shoulder, and brought it down with a crisp, echoing blow.
CLANG!
The metallic ring carried clearly across the quiet countryside.

The iron spike seated firmly into the treated timber, locking the foot of Rail 0001 to the earth.
A loud, spontaneous cheer went up from the hundreds of workers lining the right-of-way. Engineers clapped, teamsters waved their hats, and a nearby steam excavator blew its whistle in celebration.
Ernest stepped back, handing the hammer back to the track foreman. He looked down at the two parallel lines of high-tensile steel stretching northward toward the distant hills.
There was no locomotive yet. No passenger cars, no grand terminal, and no timetable. But for the first time in the history of Belfast, the land carried a heavy steel railway.
Samuel walked up beside him, looking down the line. "Only two hundred and thirty-six kilometers left to lay, Ernest."
Ernest looked at his chief surveyor, a steady, resolute smile on his face. "Then stop standing around, Samuel. Tell the crews to build the future."
Samuel turned toward the waiting work gangs, raising his voice across the silent roadbed. "You heard him! Pick up the rails!" A hundred iron bars slammed into the ballast, the teamsters urged their horses forward, and as the next length of steel was hoisted toward the ties, the Belfast National Railway officially began its march across the kingdom.
