The carriage reached the Teucher Iron & Steel basin shortly before ten that evening.

Ernest knew they were close long before the sprawling site came into view. The northern horizon glowed with a dull, bruised-orange haze that hung over the dark countryside, broken by scattered white points from temporary electric lamps and the occasional sudden flare of a foundry chimney.

The road crested a low ridge, and the entire plain opened up below.

Six thousand acres of organized industrial chaos stretched across the river basin. Temporary supply roads cut through the site in a rough grid. Storage sheds and fireproof warehouses stood beside towering mounds of refractory brick, fluxing limestone, structural iron, timber, and heavy machinery castings. Tall wooden crane derricks rose above deep concrete foundation pits, while portable steam engines powered pumps and winches throughout the works.

Farther east, the dark, imposing skeleton of the first blast furnace towered over the plain. Massive stone foundations supported the lower hearth, while riveted iron columns climbed thirty meters into the night sky, shrouded in timber scaffolding. Beside it stood its unfinished twin—Blast Furnace No. 2.

Behind the furnace stacks stretched the long, parallel roofs of the Otto-Hoffmann coking batteries, and beyond those lay the heavy superstructure of the pneumatic converter shop.

Ernest’s eyes locked onto the converter building. That was why he had driven out in the dead of night.

The carriage descended toward the main security gate. The guards recognized the House of Teucher crest immediately and swung the heavy timber gates inward without delay.

Inside, the site was alive with motion. Hundreds of shift workers operated beneath intense electric arc lamps. Masons laid firebrick lining, riveters hammered away at structural frames, heavy wagons unloaded machinery components, and civil engineers moved between buildings carrying blueprints and oil lanterns.

Ernest stepped out in front of the temporary administrative office. A young duty clerk hurried over, clutching a ledger. "My lord? We were not expecting you until the morning shift."

"Where is Master Hollen?" Ernest asked, walking past him.

"The converter house, my lord. He’s been there since the afternoon shift came on."

"I should have guessed." Ernest held up his leather portfolio. "I can find my own way."

The converter shop was a massive steel-and-brick shell. Heavy iron columns supported partially completed roof trusses high above the factory floor. Temporary timber scaffolding surrounded the central machinery foundations, where a massive, pear-shaped steel vessel hung suspended between two immense trunnion bearings.

Even uncommissioned, the machine possessed a brutal, imposing presence. The steel shell rose nearly three stories above the pit floor, constructed from thick, riveted steel plates. Heavy forged trunnions extended laterally into massive bearing housings; one trunnion was hollow, engineered to channel high-pressure air directly into the windbox beneath the vessel.

Inside the open mouth, masons were laying the final courses of acid refractory lining.

Ernest stopped at the edge of the pit. Seeing a machine on drafting paper was one thing; seeing fifteen tons of forged iron and riveted steel hanging in three dimensions was quite another. His calculations had transformed into a physical titan.

"You are supposed to be managing a railway survey, Ernest," a voice called out from the dark near the bearing foundations.

Hollen Vane stepped into the light of an arc lamp. The old forge master wore heavy leather work boots, soot-stained trousers, and a canvas work coat dusted with firebrick powder. His thick white hair was tangled, looking as though he had been running his fingers through it all afternoon.

Ernest offered a faint smile. "And you are supposed to be sleeping, Hollen."

"A luxury neither of us can afford," Hollen grunted, stepping up to the pit railing. "What brings you out here at ten at night?"

Ernest raised the leather portfolio. "I bring operational realities."

Hollen eyed the thick folder suspiciously. "How expensive?"

"That is Arthur’s headache."

"Then why do you look so somber?"

Ernest handed him the material projection report. Hollen unrolled it, reading the top sheet under the glare of the electric lamp. His expression tightened as he flipped through the subsequent pages.

"Are these numbers verified?" Hollen asked quietly.

"Unfortunately, yes," Ernest confirmed. "Nearly five hundred kilometers of high-tensile running rail for the main line alone."

"Five hundred kilometers..." Hollen muttered, turning to the second page. "Passing loops. Station yards. Freight sidings. Switches. Bridge girders. Wheel tires. Axles. Locomotive boiler plate." He lowered the paper, looking at Ernest. "Could you not have designed a slightly smaller railway?"

"I tried," Ernest said smoothly. "The geography refused to cooperate."

Hollen gave him a flat, unamused look. "Liar."

Ernest let out a soft laugh as they walked deeper into the converter hall.

"Is the civil work really moving this quickly?" Hollen asked.

"Faster than our initial projections," Ernest said. "We split the northern line into seven independent construction divisions, operating simultaneously."

Hollen stopped in his tracks, staring at him. "Seven divisions? You initiated heavy earthworks across the entire two hundred and forty kilometers at once?"

"It saves two years of construction time."

"It creates seven times the logistical fires to put out!"

"Arthur voiced the exact same concern," Ernest noted.

"Then Arthur is occasionally a sensible man," Hollen retorted. He looked up at the massive steel converter hanging above them. "When do your divisions require the first delivery of finished rails?"

"Not tomorrow," Ernest said. "I am not asking you to rush the first heat test. But I need a definitive window for sustained rolling mill output."

Hollen let out a long, heavy breath, looking up at the pear-shaped vessel. "That depends entirely on whether your giant iron kettle behaves itself when we blow air through it."

Ernest looked offended. "Kettle?"

"That is what the foundrymen are calling it," Hollen smirked. "A thirty-ton iron tea kettle."

"It is a pneumatic converter, Hollen. It doesn’t boil water; it oxidizes carbon and silicon at eighteen hundred degrees."

"It still looks like a kettle," Hollen said firmly.

Ernest shook his head. "There is no arguing with practical founders."
