Chapter 184: Breaking Ground Part 2
By the end of the first week, the railway headquarters in Helmarte was buried in paper. Daily telegraph reports arrived constantly:
Division II requesting additional dump wagons.
Division IV short 140 laborers.
Division III requests priority allocation of hydraulic dewatering pumps.
Division VI reports timber delivery delay.
Division VII requires two additional portable steam engines.
Arthur stood beside Ernest’s desk, holding the latest stack. "You wanted seven railways. You now have seven sets of operational crises."
"Excellent," Ernest said without looking up.
"Excellent?"
"Problems mean they are moving earth. Silence means they are sitting idle."
The immediate bottleneck was transport. Ironically, they were building a railway because Belfast’s road network was failing, but until the track was laid, every shovel, boiler, stone block, tool crate, and food ration had to move by wagon.
Supply depots were established every thirty kilometers along the route. Warehouses rose near road junctions, temporary workshops repaired broken axles, and portable telegraph stations connected division headquarters directly to Helmarte.
Every evening, standardized construction metrics flowed into the capital: cubic meters excavated, earth placed, culverts completed, timber consumed, injuries, weather delays, and expenditure.
"Look at Division II," Ernest said, pointing to an earthwork report during a morning briefing with Samuel.
"A long cutting through gently rising terrain," Samuel noted.
"Look at the disposal logs," Ernest pointed out. "They are hauling excavated soil three kilometers west to a spoil site, while Division III is excavating borrow pits four kilometers north to build an embankment."
Samuel blinked, then looked closer at the profile sheets.
"We are moving the same dirt twice," Ernest said. "Excavated material from cuttings must be transported directly into adjacent embankment fills wherever practical. Soil is a construction material, not waste."
The directive went out to all seven divisions the following morning: Balance the earthworks.
By the fifth week, progress reports covered an entire wall of Ernest’s study:
Division I: Major drainage works completed through the first twelve kilometers.
Division II: Large-scale embankment construction underway.
Division III: Excavating Elmont bridge pier foundations.
Division IV: Grading the Millford station approach.
Division V: Advancing rapidly through the central valley.
Division VI: Access works underway for the northern river bridges.
Division VII: Clearing the main freight yard near the mining district.
North of Helmarte, a broad strip of graded earth cut through the fields. Drainage ditches flanked it, stone culverts passed beneath unfinished embankments, and deep cuts sliced through ridges. Teams of draft horses dragged scrapers while steam excavators dug through heavy clay.
Local villagers gathered along fence lines to watch the steam machines work. Merchants were already speculating on land near proposed station sites, forcing Ernest to issue an immediate freeze on all property acquisitions by Teucher subsidiaries to prevent speculative price bubbles.
Late one evening, Anna entered the study carrying black coffee. She stood behind Ernest, looking at the master wall map crowded with black, red, and blue pins.
"What am I looking at?" she asked.
"The railway."
She looked out the window into the dark. "I don’t see any tracks."
"The strange thing about railways," Ernest smiled, taking the cup, "is that ninety percent of the work happens before a single rail is laid."
"So you have employed thousands of men to build a railway without building the railway."
"Precisely."
"Engineering logic," she chuckled, leaving him to his reports.
Ernest returned his attention to the wall. Her joke touched the exact problem he had been tracking on a secondary ledger.
Civil earthmoving was progressing rapidly. But eventually, every division would reach the same absolute limit: the earthworks would be graded, the bridge abutments poured, the timber ties stacked, and the ballast crushed.
And then... they would need rails.
Ernest pulled down the material projection sheet: PROJECTED STEEL REQUIREMENTS — NORTHERN LINE.
Running rails alone required nearly five hundred kilometers of high-tensile steel. Add passing loops, sidings, station yards, switches, bridge girders, wheel tires, axles, locomotive boilers, and structural plate. The railway was consuming steel on paper far faster than the kingdom had ever produced it.
For months, Ernest had viewed the basin steelworks as a project running parallel to the railway. That was a mistake. The railway was entirely dependent upon it.
If Hollen’s blast furnaces or converter vessels fell six months behind, hundreds of kilometers of completed earthwork would sit idle, deteriorating in the rain.
Ernest placed his coffee on the desk and rang for his coat.
A servant appeared at the door. "Yes, my lord?"
"Prepare my carriage for the basin works."
The servant glanced at the clock. "Now, my lord? It is nearly ten at night."
"Now," Ernest said, gathering the steel projections.
Samuel could grade the earth, and the masons could build the bridges. But none of it became a railway until Hollen poured the steel. The most critical construction site on the Belfast National Railway was no longer along its two-hundred-and-forty-kilometer line.
It was inside the blast furnace bays of the Teucher Iron & Steel Corporation.
By the time the carriage wheels rattled across the cobblestones leading into the Teucher Iron & Steel basin, the sky had turned a deep, bruised violet, illuminated only by the harsh glare of flare lamps and the distant, roaring orange bloom of industrial fires. Night shifts worked without pause here. The air smelled of sulfur, wet lime, pulverized slag, and the sharp, hot bite of ozone.
Ernest stepped down from the carriage before the horses had even fully halted, stepping around a pile of firebrick to enter the primary blast furnace bay.
Hollen stood on a high timber catwalk overlooking Blast Furnace One. He wore a heavy leather apron over his shirt, his face smeared with soot and his thick beard glowing faintly under the yellow flare light. Beside him, stone masons were laying the final course of refractory lining inside the towering steel mantle, their hammers beating a steady, metallic rhythm against the shell.
Hollen didn’t look surprised to see Ernest at such an ungodly hour. He simply wiped his brow with a greasy forearm and leaned against the iron railing. "I suppose you didn’t drive out here at eleven o’clock to admire the masonry."
"The northern line is grading twelve kilometers of formation a week, Hollen," Ernest called up over the din of the pneumatic riveters below. He held up the rolled material projections. "If Samuel keeps this pace through the dry season, Division Four will be ready for ballast and sleepers by autumn. Which means I need sixty tons of high-tensile steel rail delivered to the railhead every forty-eight hours."
Hollen let out a deep, rumbling laugh that echoed inside the steel shell. "Sixty tons every two days? We haven’t even fired the drying kilns on the coking batteries yet, Ernest!"
"Then we fire them tonight," Ernest said, stepping onto the iron stairs to join the old founder on the catwalk. "The earthworks are no longer an engineering study, Hollen. They’re an hungry open mouth. If we don’t feed it steel, the entire northern line grinds to a halt before winter."
Hollen looked down at his scarred, calloused hands, then out across the vast, dark basin where the foundations for the pneumatic converter shop were taking shape under the glare of arc lamps. The smile faded from his face, replaced by the fierce, unyielding pride of a master builder.
"Then tell your surveyors to keep digging," Hollen grunted, turning back toward the towering furnace stack. "Because when your roadbed is ready for iron... I’ll have the steel waiting."
