Edward gave him a dry, flat look.

Ashford set the cup back down without drinking. "Yes. You’re right. That is statistically impossible."

A faint, fatalistic smile touched Edward’s lips. "Schedule him for tomorrow morning."

"A private chamber audience?"

"Initially," the King said, picking the letter up once more to look at the crimson seal. "And Ashford?"

"Your Majesty?"

"Have the servants clear the main conference table."

The Prime Minister frowned. "Why?"

"Because," Edward said softly, "I have a distinct feeling he will be bringing maps."

The following morning proved the King’s instinct entirely correct.

At precisely nine o’clock, the tall mahogany doors of the royal conference chamber swung open.

Ernest entered first, attired in a dark, impeccably tailored wool suit. Hollen Vane followed a step behind, his thick, graying beard freshly trimmed over a high-collared vest. "No," Edward said immediately.

Ernest stopped mid-stride. "Your Majesty?"

The King pointed a finger at the leather cases. "Every single time you enter a room carrying those cylinders, my Chancellor of the Exchequer develops a migraine."

Prime Minister Ashford, standing near the window, coughed into his hand to smother a dry chuckle.

Ernest offered a polite, measured bow. "I assure Your Majesty, today’s proposal is structurally unique."

"That phrasing concerns me even more." Edward’s sharp blue eyes shifted to the old forge master standing beside Ernest. "And you must be Master Hollen Vane."

Hollen bowed low and deep. "Your Majesty."

Edward had read Hollen’s name in dozens of state industrial reports. The old founder had been the practical engine behind Ernest’s early manufacturing breakthroughs, converting abstract blueprints into iron and steam. But Hollen rarely graced the royal court; his domain was the heat, noise, and sulfur of the foundry floor, not polished marble halls.

Edward gestured toward the high-backed velvet chairs lining the long oak table. "Please. Sit."

When the men took their seats, the King leaned forward, resting his forearms on the polished wood. "Your letter was remarkably vague, Ernest."

"By design, Your Majesty."

"I did."

Edward glanced toward the heavy leather tubes resting against the wall. "How industrial?"

Ernest considered his words carefully. "Extremely."

Ashford let out a small, tired sigh. "I knew it."

Ernest stood up, stepping toward the center of the room. "If Your Majesty permits?"

Edward gestured toward the sprawling, bare oak table. "I had the room cleared for a reason. Proceed."

One of the palace attendants unbuckled the brass latches of the largest drafting tube and handed the rolled contents to Ernest.

Ernest unsealed the leather cap and pulled out a thick cylinder of heavy, linen-backed vellum. Hollen immediately stepped up to assist, taking one end of the roll. Together, they smoothed the drawing across the length of the table.

Then Ernest added a second sheet, aligning the registration marks at the margins.

Then a third.

King Edward slowly stood up from his chair.

Ashford abandoned his post near the window, moving closer to the table’s edge.

When the final sheet was weighted down with brass inkwells, almost twenty feet of oak table had vanished beneath a dense, breathtaking web of fine black ink and watercolor washes.

The King said nothing.

Neither did the Prime Minister.

Before them lay the master layout for the basin site. It was not a blueprint for a single factory. It was not even a complex in the conventional sense.

The King raised his head, his brow furrowed in genuine disbelief. "Ernest."

Ernest hesitated, softening his tone. "...Perhaps only slightly."

Edward returned his focus to the layout, tracing the outer boundary line with his thumb. "How much land are we looking at?"

"Six thousand acres have been selected within the basin district," Ernest replied clearly.

Ashford’s head snapped up. "Six thousand acres?!"

"Yes, Prime Minister."

"For an iron factory?!"

"The heavy production core occupies only a fraction of that acreage initially," Ernest explained, pointing to the shaded first zone. "Phase One utilizes the primary river frontage. The remaining land is strictly reserved for worker residential cantonments, municipal utilities, secondary supply industries, internal transit corridors, and long-term expansion."

Edward followed the blue line of the river on the map. "Why this specific basin?"

"Water and logistics," Ernest answered instantly. "High-volume steel manufacturing consumes millions of gallons of water daily—for steam generation, jacket cooling, slag granulation, and gas scrubbing. The river provides an inexhaustible supply."

His finger moved west toward the mountain ranges. "Furthermore, the basin sits on the natural low-gradient axis between our primary iron ore holdings and the northern coking coal fields."

Ashford leaned over the map, his eyes narrowing. "You already control the raw material deposits?"

"The vast majority of them," Ernest confirmed. "Iron ore, metallurgical coal, and fluxing limestone are all secured through Teucher Mining Company."

Edward’s expression shifted, the initial shock giving way to sharp political assessment. "So the core supply chain is entirely domestic."

King Edward leaned in, squinting at the design. "What is this device?"

Silence fell over the royal chamber as the full scope of Ernest’s vision sank in.

Ernest unrolled a massive topographical map across the remaining space of the table.

It was a complete territorial map of the Kingdom. Provincial borders, river basins, mountain passes, deep-water ports, coal fields, iron deposits, and major population centers were rendered in exquisite detail. Helmarte sat near the geographic center.

Across the landscape, bold black lines radiated outward from the capital like the arteries of a living organism.

One major line cut straight north toward the mountain mining provinces. Another stretched east toward the coastal port cities. A third ran west toward the agricultural heartland. Thin, dashed lines branched off toward regional manufacturing hubs.

King Edward walked slowly to the edge of the table, his eyes fixed on the sweeping black corridors.

"What are these lines, Ernest?"

Ernest stood beside his King. For a brief second, he remembered where this long journey had begun—with a single set of drawings for an experimental steam engine.

He had wanted to design a locomotive that could move freight faster than a team of draft horses. But a locomotive required specialized iron rails. Specialized rails required high-tensile steel. Ashford stared at the web of lines stretching across the provinces, the true scope of the vision breaking over him like a wave.

Ernest raised his head, looking his sovereign in the eye.

"What I am presenting to the Crown..." Ernest declared, "...is the master charter for the Kingdom’s first National Heavy Railway Network."
