Chapter 1152 - 1029: For the Sake of Others’ Affection, She Also Paid a Price
Gu Anxi was wearing a white coat, about to head to the ward, when she saw Chen Ming rushing to the emergency room with Song Jia in his arms. She stopped and called out to the unaware Chen Ming, "What’s the matter?"
Chen Ming paused and looked relieved upon seeing Gu Anxi, "Her hand’s burned."
’Let me take a look.’ Gu Anxi went over to examine, but Song Jia turned awkwardly, unwilling to let her see.
Gu Anxi didn’t get angry, just glanced briefly, "It’s an external burn, just go to the emergency room for a checkup and it’ll be okay. If you’re worried, look for Director Hao; he initially specialized in this department, and his skills are particularly good."
Chen Ming seemed skeptical, "Really?"
Gu Anxi lightly coughed, "Are you questioning me?"
Chen Ming immediately shut his mouth, "I wouldn’t dare."
After speaking, he was about to carry Song Jia to the emergency room. Gu Anxi could see Song Jia was in pain but said nothing more.
She could see clearly; the burn was not light.
Watching them leave, she took the assistant nurse to the ward, glancing at the chart in the nurse’s hand—it was Lu Heng’s scans. She looked at it and spoke softly, "It’s not looking good."
"Does he need surgery?" the nurse immediately asked.
Gu Anxi glanced at her, smiled, "What, do you feel sorry for him?"
She entered the elevator, hands in pockets, head slightly tilted watching the red numbers, "Dr. Lu is indeed quite handsome."
The young nurse blushed, shyly spoke after a long pause, "Dr. Lu is very good-looking, but he’s too cold, not easy to get along with."
Gu Anxi chuckled, saying nothing more.
When the elevator reached the top floor and stopped, the doors opened to reveal Lu Xueman standing outside, looking anxious.
Upon seeing Gu Anxi, her eyes immediately brightened as she stepped forward, "Anxi, you’re finally here."
Due to the issue with Mrs. Bo, Gu Anxi really couldn’t bring herself to like this Mrs. Lu in front of her. But as a doctor, and the other as a patient’s family member, she had to maintain professionalism.
As she walked, she asked, "How is Lu Heng now?"
Lu Xueman wiped a tear, "He’s still burning up, Director Hao has tried several medications but the fever won’t go down, what can be done?"
Gu Anxi paused, suddenly asked, "Has Dr. Jiang been called to look at him?"
"Xiao Jiang?" Lu Xueman was stunned, then muttered, "Why would she come?"
Gu Anxi said nothing more, quickly headed to the ward, followed by the nurse who anxiously advised, "Dr. Gu, please slow down, you’re pregnant now."
"It’s fine." As Gu Anxi spoke, she’d already reached the ward door. She pushed it open directly.
Lu Heng’s fever hadn’t subsided, his body was somewhat weak, lying there half-comatose, quite pitiful. More pitiful were the two children squatting on either side of his bed... they resembled Lu Heng very closely, and seemed like two sons.
Gu Anxi guessed they were Lu Ze’s sons, couldn’t help but sigh inwardly, turned to the nurse, "Take them to my office to play."
The two boys shook their heads, unwilling, clinging tightly by Lu Heng’s bedside.
At this moment, Lu Xueman came over, complexly explaining, "Lu Heng got this way playing in the snow with them, now they stick around for fear of being abandoned..."
In her heart, Lu Xueman held a deep resentment towards Lu Ze’s sons raised outside, and spoke sternly, "Simply born as debt collectors."
The two children were too young to understand what debt collectors meant, but it was clear this grandma’s scolding wasn’t good. They remained silent, heads bowed, clinging closely to Lu Heng.
Lu Xueman sneered, "Anxi, see, these two little brats are very bad, relying on my love for Lu Heng so I can’t do anything to them, they don’t listen to a word I say."
Her words made the kids’ eyes show a hint of fear, like wounded little animals.
Gu Anxi glanced at Lu Xueman, casually remarked, "Now that Lu Heng’s not here, you can just send them away, or leave them outside without care, or toss them into an orphanage, wouldn’t that be better than scaring them like this, like an old gossip?"
Lu Xueman froze.
Almost immediately, she was about to explode; from past to present, she’d seen countless people, but never, never had anyone dared call her an old gossip to her face!
She was furious, but mindful of Lu Heng, so her pale face turned purple with indignation.
Gu Anxi lightly looked at her, placed a thermometer under Lu Heng’s armpit, and a smart little fellow helped raise Lu Heng’s arm, Gu Anxi smiling, "What a good kid."
Lu Xueman glared, wanted to speak, but Gu Anxi without raising her head said, "Mrs. Lu, now shouldn’t the focus be on healing Lu Heng’s leg? Sending these two away won’t cure it."
For a moment, Lu Xueman couldn’t refute.
She knew the girl in front of her had skills, her son once liked her, perhaps still did... She felt reluctant, but under the current pressure from Gu Anxi, remained silent.
Without a word from her, Gu Anxi also stayed quiet, a while later pulled out the thermometer for a look.
Close to forty degrees.
At that moment, Director Hao came over, upon seeing Gu Anxi, came to inquire, "How is it?"
"Temperature’s very high." Gu Anxi responded, gently patting Lu Heng’s face.
Lu Heng slowly opened his eyes, unfocused gaze looking at her... Gu Anxi leaned in and spoke a few words, he stared at her, eyes lacking much emotion.
Beside them, Lu Xueman was extremely tense, stepping forward slightly panic-stricken asking, "What’s going on? The fever won’t go down, what can be done?"
She pondered and complained, "Should Professor Bo be brought back, can you two handle it?"
Gu Anxi moved to the foot of the bed, pulled up the bed cover, carefully examining Lu Heng’s leg.
She was cautious not to hurt him, knowing that leg was already... largely gone.
Lu Heng was mostly awake, lying quietly, feeling Gu Anxi checking his leg, a leg almost empty... like the void in his eyes.
Director Hao also leaned in, softly asked, "How’s it?"
Gu Anxi carefully put down the cover, softly said, "Go to the operating room for cleaning."
After speaking, she looked at Lu Xueman.
Lu Xueman was momentarily stunned, then urgently asked, "What does cleaning mean, can it reduce the fever?"
"It’s a minor surgery, the inflammation is quite serious, that part may need cleaning." Gu Anxi’s voice was slightly hoarse, "I will anesthetize him."
Lu Xueman’s eyes reddened, although still recalling her status as a lady, she dabbed her eyes with a tissue, "Then... should Professor Bo be called back?"
"He’s in Jiangcheng, waiting for him to return could mean Lu Heng’s leg might be completely beyond saving, and there’s his brain too... Are you sure about this?" Gu Anxi said casually.
Director Hao was shocked, and Lu Xueman even more so, her eyes wide as she looked at Gu Anxi, "It can’t be... that serious, it’s just an inflammation."
"It’s a common inflammation, but it’s very serious. How many days did he have a fever before he came?" Gu Anxi’s voice was devoid of emotion, "He was brought to the hospital at least after three days of fever, and then spent several days here... It’s a miracle he’s lasted this long. I hope after surgery his brain won’t have any issues."
Lu Xueman was even more frightened, gripping her clothes tightly, but then she firmly said, "I want Professor Bo back, I must have him do this surgery for Lu Heng, I don’t trust you."
At this point, she forgot she was a lady of high society, pointing at those two little rascals, "Why aren’t you quickly holding your brother, don’t let him go into the operating room, she wants to harm him."
The two children looked at each other, but in the end neither of them moved, they just looked at Gu Anxi.
There was reliance in their eyes.
This made Lu Xueman furious, the Lu Family feeds and clothes them, yet they don’t listen to her and instead trust an outsider. With this anger, Mrs. Lu blurted out, "Do you want to end up on the streets?"
Gu Anxi spoke coldly, "Enough, it wasn’t you who took them in."
Saying this, she straightened up and looked at Director Hao, "Prepare the operating room."
Director Hao was also a bit worried, "Is your health... okay?"
Even a minor surgery takes two to three hours.
Gu Anxi looked at Lu Heng, and softly said, "I have to do this surgery. Waiting for Uncle is too late, fortunately I’m in Beicheng, otherwise... the consequences would be unimaginable."
Director Hao was also embarrassed.
At this moment, Lu Xueman started to make a fuss again, she really didn’t want to entrust her son’s future to Gu Anxi. This girl has always been troublesome, if she did something wrong, Lu Heng would be finished, leaving her all alone, how could she cope?
Lu Xueman this time tore off her façade and caused a scene, refusing to let Gu Anxi perform the surgery. Gu Anxi directly said to Director Hao, "Give her a sedative, lock her up until I come out of the operating room."
Sweat appeared on Director Hao’s forehead —
This, this isn’t quite right, is it?
Gu Anxi’s voice was stern, "Hurry up."
Director Hao immediately signaled to the two nurses, then the ward got a bit chaotic... They knew this could blow up, but they had no choice, besides if it did, they had Dr. Little Gu to handle it.
Thus, the dazzling Mrs. Lu, despite her protests, was dealt with, and placed on a nearby sofa. Gu Anxi let out a long sigh, "Alright, now take Mr. Lu to the examination room."
The nurse looked at Lu Xueman, hesitated, "Just lock her here? What if..."
"Have someone watch her, don’t let her out." Gu Anxi’s voice was slightly low, "She probably has delusions of persecution right now."
She even disregarded Lu Heng’s life.
Director Hao, at this point, was somewhat remorseful, he had failed in his duty and misjudged Lu Heng’s condition, he wanted to say something but Gu Anxi simply said softly, "Let’s talk after the surgery."
Before the surgery, she carefully examined, Lu Heng cooperated well, though during the cooperation there was a sense of lifelessness. After getting the X-rays, Gu Anxi only glanced at them briefly before showing them to Lu Heng.
Lu Heng quietly watched her.
Gu Anxi smiled lightly, "Do you feel like life and death are predetermined, and there’s no point in staying alive anymore?"
Lu Heng didn’t make a sound because his throat was burnt and he couldn’t speak, he just quietly watched her.
Gu Anxi smiled again, "Well, it is pointless, the pride from childhood is gone, there’s no meaning to life anymore, but you also haven’t lost entirely. What you hate most in your heart is that Lu Ze raised quite a few sons outside... Now if anything happens to you, your mother already said she’d throw those two little rascals out."
She clicked her tongue, "In this weather, it’s cold and freezing outside, better to be thrown into an orphanage if someone has the conscience, but if someone is a bit ruthless and tosses them onto the street, wouldn’t they starve or freeze to death?... But you wouldn’t care much, you hate them, having them accompany you wouldn’t be bad either."
Lu Heng stared at her fiercely, his hand slowly clenched into a fist.
Although he vaguely understood she was intentionally provoking him, he couldn’t help but feel anger, having an urge to strangle her.
Gu Anxi patted his exhausted face, and said blandly, "If you don’t want them on the streets, just stay alive, no one will care about their life or death, don’t expect anything from me... I’m not that kind-hearted."
After she finished, she had the nurse push him to the operating room, herself going to change into surgical attire, Director Hao also went to assist in the surgery. Before surgery Gu Anxi instructed carefully, Director Hao was somewhat puzzled.
Gu Anxi hesitated before saying, "In case I collapse later, take over, okay?"
She handed a set of data to Director Hao, "Look at this, Professor Bo should have explained it to you."
Director Hao nodded, was somewhat concerned: ’Are you really okay? Why don’t I do it, and you watch from the side.’
Gu Anxi stood, put on gloves, the nurse helped her put on the mask. She looked at Director Hao and said lightly, "I’ll do the first part, it’s safer."
The surgery was neither too long nor too short, more than three hours. As it neared its end, Gu Anxi started to struggle, being less than three months into her pregnancy, she lived comfortably these days... Director Hao kindly noticed immediately, "Want me to take over?"
"Mm, the last part." Gu Anxi said softly, ’I’ll watch from the side.’
Unexplainably, Director Hao felt emotional, unsure of the feeling inside him.
Actually, Anxi treated Lu Heng with utmost care, she could entirely choose not to be on the surgery even now, especially since Lu Heng’s condition was dangerous, and secondly... by doing this, she’s doing her best.
Many knew Lu Heng liked Gu Anxi, but few knew Gu Anxi paid a certain price for being liked... Maybe she felt sorry for interrupting someone else’s life, though she never said so, and never acted as such, but deep down she was gentle.
Director Hao’s eyes were somewhat warm, he whispered, "I will definitely handle it well."
Gu Anxi nodded.
Sitting down to rest, only just sat down for less than five minutes, the little nurse came in, whispered, "Mrs. Lu woke up, her bodyguard released her, and she’s heading towards the operating room now."
Gu Anxi slightly closed her eyes, "Get the hospital security here."
She paused for a moment, "I’ll go check outside."
The nurse refused, "Your body can’t handle it, better stay here."
Gu Anxi insisted a bit, "I can’t let her make a scene in the operating room."
The little nurse was still hesitant, but Gu Anxi was persistent, "Alright, this is in Director Hao’s hands, I’m heading out."
She was a bit weary, her complexion wasn’t good, said a few things to Director Hao then went out.
As soon as she left the operating room, Lu Xueman had brought her bodyguard over...
Furious!
