Chapter 68: New Ability?
Earlier, Gu Lin had clearly pulled the knife from her pant... but this time...she had taken it from empty space.
Gu Lin calmly raised the knife. She stabbed Jiao Ji’s corpse again. Chen Chen’s expression became solemn.
’Spatial ability?’
’No, that didn’t make sense. Gu Lin had never demonstrated such an ability before. Could her ability have changed after death? That was even more impossible.’
Unless...
Chen Chen’s eyes narrowed. ’A new ability allowed her to trigger a superpower at the crucial moment?’
He couldn’t explain it, but one thing was certain. This was worth reporting.
"I need to tell Ni Mengxue."
A smile appeared on Chen Chen’s face. That woman, Ni Mengxue, had always seemed strange.
When she had given him the ability-levelling potion, for no reason he was confused.
At the time, he hadn’t understood what she meant. Now, he finally realised it. ’She knew. ’
She had known that he possessed a different kind of psychic ability. And perhaps she had also known that he would survive this night.
Otherwise, why would she specifically tell him about Fair Shallow Land? Chen Chen’s smile deepened.
"Interesting."
He had a feeling that following that woman might be the best decision he had made since the apocalypse began.
...................
Meanwhile, Ni Mengxue’s group moved toward the entrance of the base.
As they approached the gate, Ni Mengxue suddenly noticed another group.
Cai Shu was leaving too. And, naturally, her husband was following beside her.
Ni Mengxue’s eyebrows twitched. ’That woman really is persistent.’
She silently hoped that Cai Shu would stay far away from them and not enter the Fair Shallow Land.
And if possible, Ni Mengxue wouldn’t mind collecting a little interest from her later if they met along the way.
She calmly grabbed Lu Yucai’s handle of the wheelchair and wheeled him toward a quieter inner room.
Once they were alone, she crouched beside him and examined his leg. After a moment, her expression became strange.
It had clearly improved.
Ni Mengxue frowned. "Since you can walk now, why aren’t you walking?"
Lu Yucai shook his head. "I want to filter out my subordinates."
Ni Mengxue stared at him. "You’re planning to test their loyalty during a zombie tide?"
"Yes."
She rubbed her forehead.
"Honestly, if you’re planning to test people because you don’t trust all your subordinates, this trip is going to become much more troublesome than necessary."
Lu Yucai remained calm. "Don’t worry. I won’t let anything happen to you."
Ni Mengxue shook her head. "You don’t understand."
Her expression became serious.
"Tests like this should be conducted in a safe environment. If you test someone’s loyalty while we’re surrounded by danger, one mistake could lead to disastrous consequences."
She sighed. "Who are the people you don’t trust?"
Lu Yucai shook his head. "I trust all of them."
Ni Mengxue blinked. "Then what’s the problem?"
"My instincts."
His gaze became slightly darker. "They keep telling me that someone among them will eventually betray me."
Ni Mengxue froze. "Your instincts? Do you have another ability?"
Lu Yucai’s eyes flickered.
Ni Mengxue immediately waved her hand. "All right. If you don’t want to tell me, I won’t ask."
"I’ll tell you."
His voice was calm. "It’s a strange ability. I can see people’s potential."
Ni Mengxue raised an eyebrow. "In numbers?"
"No." Lu Yucai shook his head. Colours. For example... I can see a strange purple aura surrounding you."
Ni Mengxue froze. "Purple? Could it be my hair colour?"
Lu Yucai: "..."
When he saw her smiling, he understood that she was trying to prank him.
"I’ve never seen that colour on anyone else." He paused. "Even Su Yao, whom I met before, didn’t have it."
Ni Mengxue stared at him. "You had this ability for a long time?"
Lu Yucai shook his head. "No."
He looked down. "Before, it was so faint that even though I could perceive colours, I couldn’t understand what they meant."
He paused. "But after giving up on..."
Even though he stopped midway through his sentence, Ni Mengxue immediately understood.
After giving up on suicide, his ability had gradually awakened. And as his desire to live became stronger, the ability had become stronger with it.
Ni Mengxue’s expression softened. She reached out and gently held his hand. "Then perhaps..."
She smiled faintly. "That’s proof that you chose the right path."
Lu Yucai looked at her. For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Outside, the distant roars of the approaching zombie echoed.
Ni Mengxue smiled. "That’s great, then. Now you can help me filter out people. It’ll make recruiting talented individuals much easier."
Hearing that, Lu Yucai smiled faintly.
"Even without me, you seem to have an eye for talent. Almost everyone you’ve recruited so far has orange potential."
Ni Mengxue’s eyes brightened. "What does orange mean?"
"From what I’ve observed, people with orange potential will eventually awaken a superpower. Moreover, their potential is high enough that they should be able to reach at least Level 10."
"Level 10?"
"Yes."
Ni Mengxue’s eyes immediately lit up.
"Wow. That’s great!"
If everyone she had recruited possessed such potential, then her group was practically filled with future powerhouses.
However, Lu Yucai’s expression suddenly became slightly complicated.
"There is one person in your group who is exceptionally talented, though."
Ni Mengxue blinked. "Who?"
"I don’t see him with us."
Ni Mengxue immediately understood. "Are you talking about Jia Liang?"
Lu Yucai nodded.
Ni Mengxue shrugged. "He asked me to save a spot for him. I already told him that I would be leaving today. If he can reach our agreed meeting point in time, he can join us."
She paused before calmly adding, "But if he can’t make it, then he’s on his own."
Lu Yucai stared at her for a moment before chuckling. "I never realised you could be so cold."
Ni Mengxue raised an eyebrow.
"Cold? I’m giving him a chance. If he can’t even reach the meeting point after knowing when and where we’re leaving, then how can I be responsible for him?"
Lu Yucai shook his head helplessly. "You’re quite ruthless."
