Chapter 72: Special Quest
With that, she stood up and walked away.
Lu Yucai’s heart trembled. He slowly watched her retreating back.
Something suddenly seemed to click inside his mind.
If even Ni Mengxue, as his partner, wasn’t willing to give up on him, then why should he give up on himself?
Perhaps there were things he couldn’t see clearly. Perhaps he had been looking at everything from the wrong angle.
And Ni Mengxue was indeed much smarter than him.
At the very least, she had never once looked at him as though he were a disaster waiting to happen.
Slowly, his tense body relaxed.
Meanwhile, Ni Mengxue was about to alight from the RV when a system notification suddenly sounded in her mind.
[Ding! The special quest of Lu Yucai’s route has been fulfilled. You have successfully uncovered the truth and discovered Lu Yucai’s true identity. Identity: Karmic Retribution Angel.]
Ni Mengxue froze. "What?"
She stared blankly at the notification. Karmic Retribution Angel?
She had only been making things up!
She had simply spouted nonsense and used them to comfort Lu Yucai. Who would have thought that her nonsense would actually become true?
Before she could recover from the shock, another notification appeared.
[Special Quest Rewards are being distributed. Reward: 10,000 Merit Points, Quick Construction Power-Up ×5, Sprouts ×3,000 kg, Rice ×20,000 kg.]
Ni Mengxue’s eyes widened. "Wow."
Her shock instantly turned into delight. "Now this is amazing!"
Ten thousand merit points alone were already an incredible reward.
Then there were the construction power-ups, thousands of kilograms of sprouts, and twenty thousand kilograms of rice.
There were clearly more rewards waiting for her to check. However, another violent bang came from outside.
The RV shook again. Ni Mengxue frowned.
She couldn’t waste time going through the reward list now.
Looking towards the people in the living room who had grim expressions, she ordered them,
"Let’s charge outside!"
"Alright!"
She knocked on the partition gate three times, and the RV stopped. It was a secret signal between her and Aunt Ruo.
One by one, all of Aunt Ruo’s husband’s and Lu Yucai’s two subordinates alighted. Fu Sinan wanted to fight too.
He was worried that Ni Mengxue would see him as a burden. But he was stopped.
"Stay behind and watch for any anomaly."
"I can fight." His deep eyes stared at Ni Mengxue with stubbornness.
"I didn’t say you can’t. But you aren’t trained." Ni Mengxue explained as she wore a bulletproof vest. It was one of the items she had asked Ruo Chiwu to buy for her.
Fu Sinan pursed his lips before sitting down. His eyes flashed with a glint.
Having no time to understand his emotions, she opened the door and was just about to step outside when the door to the inner rooms opened behind her.
Ni Mengxue turned around, and Lu Yucai walked out. He wasn’t using his wheelchair anymore.
She stared at him in disbelief. "What are you doing?"
Lu Yucai calmly looked at Ni Mengxue. "I want to confront her."
He glanced toward the window.
"I know you will most likely kill her, but before she dies, I want to settle everything between us. I want closure."
Ni Mengxue’s eyes blinked with admiration before a soft laugh escaped her lips.
This guy had really understood her temperament too well. She nodded. "Alright. Let’s go."
Once outside, Ni Mengxue finally got a clear view of the surroundings.
Only after leaving the RV did she realize just how hot the area had become.
The ground was an enormous stretch of open land, mostly barren and cracked from the heat.
The air above it seemed to ripple, making everything in the distance appear distorted.
Even the soil beneath their feet was scorching, releasing a faint rustling and sizzling sound whenever someone stepped on it.
Here and there, a few stubborn patches of weeds and withered plants clung to the ground, their leaves drooping beneath the unbearable temperature.
There was hardly any shelter. It was the perfect place for a fight, and an equally perfect place for zombies to gather. Not far away, another vehicle had stopped.
A chaotic battle was already taking place around it.
Several people were fighting desperately while zombies emerged from all directions, stumbling and sprinting across the open ground.
Ni Mengxue’s gaze swept over them. Among the incoming zombies, she immediately spotted several that were at least Level Four.
Her expression darkened. "Finish this as soon as possible!"
Her shout echoed across the open field. Unfortunately, it also attracted the attention of the zombies farther away.
More roars sounded in the distance. A few of Lu Yucai’s subordinates frowned. Milan, in particular, looked displeased.
He was a typical soldier, tall and broad-shouldered, with a disciplined posture and sharp, practical eyes.
He had spent years following orders and observing battlefields, and Ni Mengxue’s loud command immediately struck him as careless.
’Should I ask Boss Lu to teach her some basic fighting tactics?’
He secretly felt that Ni Mengxue should have known better than to shout in the middle of a zombie horde.
Ni Mengxue could clearly feel the judgmental gazes falling on her. She ignored them.
Their sword clashes and superpower attacks were already attracting zombies from all directions. Her shout was merely a small spark thrown into an already raging fire.
There was no point worrying about it now. She strode toward Cai Shu. However, before she could reach her, several people immediately intercepted her.
They attacked without hesitation. Ni Mengxue’s eyes narrowed. ’When did Cai Shu become attached to such a large group?’
Judging by their coordination, equipment, and numbers, this wasn’t some random group of survivors. There was clearly a reason they were protecting Cai Shu.
And she had no idea what that reason was. But she didn’t have time to investigate. She had only one objective. Clear a path for Lu Yucai.
Ni Mengxue raised her hand. A terrifying chill spread outward. "Freeze."
The temperature around her dropped rapidly. Ice surged across the ground like a wave, instantly trapping the legs of the people rushing toward her.
