Chapter 71: Truth About Cai Shu-2
Ni Mengxue looked at him. When she saw the confusion and hurt in his eyes, she sighed softly. "Well, honestly, it’s because she’s your mother."
Silence descended over the RV. Lu Yucai stared at Ni Mengxue as if he couldn’t believe what he had just heard.
His lips trembled slightly. "How do you know? No wait... how can that be possible... if it is... why does she want to kill me?"
He swallowed hard before asking, "And why did she tell me..."
Ni Mengxue looked at him with pity. "Whatever I’m going to tell you now will definitely hurt you. So try to be brave."
Lu Yucai remained silent for a moment before finally nodding. Ni Mengxue took a deep breath and began.
"When you were born, Cai Shu and her husband, Lu Yu, had very high expectations for you. But when you were born, there was a birthmark on your face."
She gently traced the birthmark on his face with her finger. "This one."
Lu Yucai’s body stiffened. Ni Mengxue continued, her voice carrying a hint of pity.
"A fortune teller told them that you would bring misfortune to everyone around you."
Lu Yucai stiffened even further. For a moment, his eyes became dark and distant. It was as though those words had unlocked memories that had been buried deep inside him.
Ni Mengxue continued,
"Not only that, at that time, they loved you so much that they decided to combine their names and give you one."
Lu Yucai’s expression changed. He quickly realized that Ni Mengxue was right.
Yu came from his father’s name, while Cai came from his mother’s surname. His fingers slowly curled into a fist.
Ni Mengxue continued, "Your mother didn’t believe the fortune teller at all in the beginning."
Lu Yucai looked at her.
Ni Mengxue sighed before saying, "However, she later suffered an accident that left her with a serious injury to her womb, making her unable to have children anymore."
Lu Yucai’s eyes widened. For a moment, he couldn’t say anything. His entire body began to tremble. Seeing this, Ni Mengxue immediately stopped talking and pulled him into her arms.
"Don’t blame yourself. It was all a coincidence."
"No." Lu Yucai shook his head. "It wasn’t a coincidence."
His voice trembled.
"Didn’t you see it? Everyone who has ever come into contact with me has suffered in one way or another."
He slowly pushed himself away from her embrace.
"The director of the orphanage was kind to me, and he eventually died and became a zombie. My best friend believed in me, and he died too."
His breathing became increasingly ragged.
"Only Song Yan survived. And why? Because he was bitter toward me. He schemed against me from the very beginning. He never loved me, so he survived."
His eyes turned red. "My mother suffered. The orphanage director suffered. Even my best friend suffered."
He looked at Ni Mengxue helplessly. "Isn’t that enough proof?"
His voice broke. "Even you would..."
Before he could finish, Ni Mengxue covered his mouth. "Why are you overthinking everything? Hear me out first."
Lu Yucai shook his head. "No. No, I don’t want to get close to you."
He suddenly moved backward, creating distance between them. Ni Mengxue’s expression immediately turned cold. "Are you going to run away from me now?"
Lu Yucai froze. Ni Mengxue stared straight into his eyes. "That fortune teller only told them half the truth, and you’re going to believe him?"
Lu Yucai’s lips trembled. "Mengxue, you don’t know. Everyone around me..."
"I don’t care!" Ni Mengxue suddenly shouted. Lu Yucai fell silent.
"I don’t care what happened to the people around you."
Her eyes were filled with determination.
"Even if I have to die because of your fate, I would still be happy. At least I would be connected to you, even in death."
After saying that, Ni Mengxue took a deep breath and forced herself to calm down. She then walked toward him and knelt in front of him, bringing herself to his eye level.
"Maybe there has been some misunderstanding. Anyway, don’t believe this nonsense."
She paused before continuing, "You know, in the world I came from, there was a special kind of people."
Lu Yucai looked at her.
Ni Mengxue racked her brain, trying to remember or come up with any nonsense she could think of.
"There seemed to be a group of people who could bring karma to the people around them. They possessed a special kind of energy. Perhaps the stronger pull of this karmic energy caused the people around them to either suffer misfortune or receive good fortune."
Lu Yucai remained silent.
Ni Mengxue continued, "For example, your orphanage director was kind to you. Perhaps that was precisely why he managed to survive for so many years."
Lu Yucai paused.
"You keep looking at the fact that he eventually became a zombie, but you’re ignoring the fact that he lived a good life before that."
She gently placed her hand over his clenched fist.
"Not only that, look at your best friend. You said he died, but I don’t believe that was necessarily the end of everything good that happened in his life."
Lu Yucai’s eyes flickered.
"Sometimes, the bad things that happen right in front of us make us forget about the even worse possibilities that could have happened."
Ni Mengxue looked at him seriously.
"Maybe you dampened the worst fate that could have happened to those people. Maybe their suffering was actually much smaller because they were connected to you."
She smiled gently. "But people only see the misfortune in front of them. So stop blaming yourself."
Lu Yucai clenched his fists; for a long time, he remained silent.
Just as Ni Mengxue was about to say something else, another loud bang came from outside the RV.
The vehicle shook violently again. Ni Mengxue turned her head toward the window. Then she looked back at Lu Yucai.
Her expression softened. "Lu Yucai, remember this."
He opened his eyes. "If you’re gone from my world, this entire world won’t be worth living in."
