Chapter 142 The Pill
Emilia’s POV
Every time I’m pushed into a corner, I fight to protect myself just like I did today. On the surface, it looks like I won. But nobody knows how scared I really am inside.
I went back to the pack house, I sat curled up on the living room sofa, staring blankly at the wall.
My collarbone throbbed beneath the bandage, a painful reminder of how close I’d come to doing something truly stupid today.
"You shouldn’t have threatened him with a knife," Eve said quietly in my mind. "That was reckless."
"Tell me something I don’t know," I muttered.
Since waking up my wolf, I’d been having these conversations with her more often.
Eve was cautious, practical. Everything I tried to be but sometimes failed at when my emotions got the better of me.
The sound of the front door opening made me sit up straighter. Sebastian’s scent, that addicting blend of mint and cedar, reached me before he did.
"You’re back early," I said as he walked into the living room, loosening his tie.
His green eyes immediately locked onto me. "You’re sitting in the dark."
"I was thinking."
He crossed the room. "Has everyone else returned?"
"Not yet. Your parents took Tiffany shopping. They won’t be back until dinner."
Sebastian sat down beside me, and the sofa dipped under his weight. His hand reached out, brushing a strand of hair from my face, and that’s when his expression changed.
"What the hell happened to your neck?"
I’d forgotten about the bandage.
"It’s nothing..."
"Emilia." His voice dropped to that dangerous Alpha tone that made even Eve whimper a little. "What. Happened."
"I got hit by a car on my way back," I said, trying to sound casual.
All the color drained from his face. "You what?"
Before I could stop him, his hands were on my shoulders, turning me to face him fully. "Where else are you hurt? Did you go to the hospital? Why didn’t you call me?"
"Sebastian, I’m fine..."
"You’re not fine!" He was already pulling at my clothes, trying to check for other injuries. "You got hit by a fucking car, Emilia!"
"It was barely a tap!" I grabbed his hands, stopping him. "Look, I’m okay. See?" I stood up and did a little spin. " All limbs still attached. No broken bones. Just a small cut."
He stared at me like I’d lost my mind. "A small cut. From a car."
"A very slow-moving car."
"That’s not the point!" He ran his hand through his black hair. "Starting tomorrow, you’re driving yourself everywhere. No more taxis. No more walking. I’m getting you a car."
I raised an eyebrow. "Why?"
"I’ll be sad if you get hurt."
My chest tightened, and my eyes started to sting.
I was touched and guilty at the same time. I was really becoming a worse person by the day. How could I lie to a lover who cared about me this much?
I wrapped my arms around his neck. "Thank you. Nothing is more important than you either, Sebastian."
He held me close, his face buried in my hair. "Don’t scare me like that again."
"I’ll try not to get hit by any more cars," I promised, trying to lighten the mood. "Though I make no guarantees about other vehicles. Motorcycles are pretty fast..."
"Emilia."
"Sorry. Inappropriate joke."
"You really can’t help yourself, can you?" Eve sighed.
Later that evening, after his parents had returned and fussed over me for a solid twenty minutes, Mila cornered me in the hallway.
"Did you use them?" she whispered like she was sharing a secret.
"Use what?"
"The supplement I gave you!" She glanced around to make sure no one was listening. "The one that strengthens the mate bond and increases fertility?"
Oh God. The magical sex pills.
"Mom, I really don’t think..."
"Use them tonight," she insisted. "Trust me on this. These are incredibly powerful. I paid a fortune for them from a very reliable source. They’ll make a man love you for the rest of his life."
"That’s not how love works..."
"Just try it!" She squeezed my hand.
When I returned to our bedroom, Sebastian was already in the shower.
I thought it over carefully and decided to tell him everything. Instead of living in fear every day, I’d rather take the gamble. If I gamble, I might have a one-in-three chance of winning. If I don’t gamble, I’ll only lose.
I can’t promise I’ll always be as lucky as I was today. And I can’t keep threatening people with my own life every time.
But if I told Sebastian, would he think I had betrayed him? What would he think of me? Would he still love me?
Everything I had now felt like something I had stolen. Like I had tricked my way into this happiness.
I pulled the pills Mila gave me out of my pocket and hesitated over whether to follow her advice. I didn’t really believe a single pill could decide someone’s heart. But in a desperate situation like this, I still hoped the pill would actually work and help me hold onto this love I fought so hard for.
"What are you thinking about?"
Sebastian was already out, standing behind me.
I jumped and asked in panic, "Why are you sneaking around?"
"I just got out of the shower." You’re the one lost in thought, aren’t you?"
I clenched the pill in my hand, blinked, and said, "Then I’m going to take a shower too..."
I answered softly, then rushed into the bathroom.
I closed the door and took a deep breath. Thank God he didn’t see the pill in my hand, or I’d have died of embarrassment.
I stood in front of the mirror, checked the wound on my collarbone carefully, then glanced at the pill in my hand.
In the end, I decided to take it. But then I got confused all over again, because Mila never told me who was supposed to take it.
Frustrated, I decided to shower first. The whole time I was in there, I kept thinking about who should take the pill for it to work better. My mind was racing, close to breaking down, but I still didn’t have an answer.
Sebastian walked over to the bathroom door and knocked. "Did you fall asleep in there?"
"No."
"Then why have you been in there so long?"
"I’m coming out in a minute."
I dried myself off with a towel, then quickly swallowed the pill.
