Chapter 149: Tantrum
"Bucket..."
"Worms..."
"Fish..."
Nezuko began to murmur, her voice growing smaller and smaller.
Her eyes welled up with tears.
And then...
"Waaaaah!!!"
She threw her little arms up and burst out crying at the top of her lungs.
It was a colossal, heart-wrenching wail. Tears streamed down in torrents and her whole little face turned red.
Daki was left bewildered.
Watching the girl cry as if her heart had been split in two, she felt, for a moment, strangely useless.
’Is she crying... over some worms?’
’Is it really that big a deal?’
But then something far more bewildering happened.
Nezuko’s crying grew louder and louder. And, in time with it... her body began to grow!
The girl, who until just now had been the size of a small child, was stretching out between one sob and the next.
Taller. Bigger. More.
Her pajamas pulled tight against her body; the sleeves and pant legs suddenly came up short.
Until she stood half a head taller than Daki.
And that wasn’t all.
Daki caught sight of demonic markings creeping up Nezuko’s neck, arms, and legs... shaped like vines!
Sharp fangs began peeking out from that howling mouth.
And in the time it took her to raise a hand to wipe her tears, a single horn slowly emerged from the right side of her forehead.
’De... Demonization?’
Daki’s jaw dropped, utterly dumbfounded.
’Is this for real?’
’All of this... over some worms?’
’Don’t tell me... I have to fight AGAIN!?’
"Marcus... fishing... worms..."
Nezuko’s little-girl voice transformed completely, suddenly taking on a husky, deeper edge.
She clenched her fists. And looked at Daki with eyes still glistening with tears.
"Bad! Give back! My worms!"
And then, at last, Daki understood everything.
This girl had dug up the worms to go fishing. Not to eat them. In other words...
She had misread the whole thing.
’Tsk! So what!?’
’Who am I?’
’I’m Upper Rank Six! The most powerful demon under Muzan-sama’s command! Marcus-sama’s new favorite!’
’I will never apologize to some brat!’
’NEVER!’
’And I’m definitely not about to start apologizing over those disgusting little critters!’
’She wants a fight?’
’Then a fight she’ll get!’
First one slip, and Tamayo had ambushed her like a fool. Then those two damn servants, ganging up on her two against one...
’No. Five against one.’
And even so...
She hadn’t been able to beat them.
’But I can’t even handle this brat either?’
Come to think of it, this suited her perfectly. She had a whole night’s worth of pent-up rage and no one to take it out on.
"Your worms are gone! If you want them so badly, go dig them up yourself!" Daki narrowed her eyes. "The only thing I can tell you is that crossing paths with me was your bad—"
She never got to say "luck".
A muddy little foot slammed square into her face.
Wham!
Daki’s gorgeous face came this close to being deformed by the impact.
She went flying through the air, did a full spin, and crashed into the ground.
... What just happened?
’My face hurts...’
’And why is everything spinning?’
But before she could recover, a weight had already landed on top of her.
Nezuko was straddling her waist, gripping her neck with one hand while the other, clenched into a fist, rose high above her head.
That face, made more imposing by maturity, was twisted with savage fury.
"Give me back... my worms!"
Daki understood.
She’d been ambushed again!
In the blink of an eye, her gaze turned ice-cold.
Because, let’s be honest, Daki could be a beast too when she wanted to.
"Ptooey!"
She turned her head and spat bloody saliva off to the side. Then she fixed Nezuko with a glare even fiercer than hers.
"I’m not giving you back a damn thing!"
The next second, a storm of punches rained down on her.
Daki raised her arms to shield her face, and the sashes burst from her back, hurling themselves at Nezuko with all their might.
And then...
The most incredible thing Daki had seen all night happened.
Nezuko, sitting on top of her, didn’t even bother to look back. She simply stretched out a hand and snatched the sashes right out of the air.
One sash.
Three.
Five.
Seven.
Almost all of them ended up trapped in that mud-stained palm.
The sharp edges cut into her hand, and blood dripped between her fingers.
Nezuko didn’t let go.
On the contrary. She squeezed harder.
And then...
Riiiip!
Seeing her sashes ripped to shreds by pure brute force, Daki’s pupils contracted sharply.
’Impossible!’
Her sashes’ toughness rivaled steel!
Tamayo had been an ambush. The two servants, a pack attack. In neither case had her sashes gotten the chance to show what they were capable of.
But now...
Now she was seeing it with her own eyes: a demon girl grabbing her sashes as if they were paper ribbons... and snapping them in two.
’How...? HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE!?’
For hundreds of years, she had lived convinced she was the strongest demon in existence.
And today...
In the span of a single hour.
Her entire understanding of the world had come crashing down.
That Tamayo, a fugitive for centuries, had some tricks up her sleeve... fine, she’d grant that.
That those two servants could beat her by joining forces... okay, she’d grant that too.
But now, even some brat...
This mansion...
’WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THIS DAMN MANSION?!’
