Chapter 183: March of the Red Spires
The mask split completely and fell away in pieces. Underneath was a woman's face, gaunt and colorless, with eyes that had once been pure white and now carried thin gold rims.
She dropped to her knees on the pale stone as the last of the layered voice died across the plaza.
Every remaining Choir member froze, then sank to their knees in perfect unison. Masks cracked and fell. The mist outside the gold circle thinned and retreated.
Silence returned, clean and sudden.
Lucy exhaled and shook bloodless dust off her blade. "That was the worst concert I have ever attended."
Isha reeled her slime back in, looking pleased. "I liked the part where they stopped."
Vespera studied the kneeling figures. "The masks held the shared will. Once the central voice fell, the rest had nothing left to follow."
Serakel's third eye dimmed. "Efficient. Disturbing, but efficient."
The Reverend Mother Superior lowered her hands. The holy-gold dome faded. "I will be hearing that sound in my sleep. I already resent it."
Levi looked down at the woman who had been the Hollow Choir's Voice. She kept her head bowed, gold-rimmed eyes fixed on the stone.
"Name," he said.
"We did not keep individual names," she answered. Her speaking voice was quiet and singular now. "I was the Voice. That is all."
"You are the Voice of the Hollow Choir under my mark," Levi said. "The song is finished. The masks stay broken. Every member of this place answers to the Sovereign Domain from this moment. Clear?"
"Clear, Master."
Gold light swept across the plaza one final time, sealing the claim into the pale stone and the remaining kneeling figures.
[Domain Claim: Hollow Choir – Complete]
Levi turned to the five women. The pit-wyrm hybrid padded back to the group, looking moderately satisfied with the amount of crushing it had been allowed to do.
"The Choir is finished," he said. "We rest here long enough to make sure the claim settles. Then we decide whether the Red Spires or the Drowned Market hear from us next."
Lucy sheathed her blade and stretched. "As long as the next one does not try to sing at me, I am flexible."
Isha nodded hard. "No more group performances. I am putting that in the new rules."
Vespera's living eyes still tracked the thinning mist. "The invitation is answered. The rest of the free courts will feel this one."
Serakel glanced at the broken masks scattered across the stone. "They will feel it and start calculating. That is when they become dangerous or useful."
The Reverend Mother Superior looked at the colorless woman still kneeling at Levi's feet. "At least this one stopped harmonizing. Small mercies."
Levi rested one hand briefly on the Voice's bowed head, locking the claim, then stepped back.
'Three free courts left on the old maps. One is already rewriting itself under the mark. The underground continues to shrink.'
The Hollow Choir's plaza remained quiet except for the low breathing of the newly claimed and the occasional shift of the pit-wyrm hybrid's weight. Gold light held the pale mist at bay.
…
The pale plaza stayed quiet while the claim settled. Broken masks littered the stone like discarded shells.
The newly claimed Choir members remained kneeling until Levi gave a short gesture and allowed them to rise. They stood in silence, gold rims in their eyes, waiting for orders that had not yet come.
The Voice stayed closest, head still slightly bowed. Without the cracked mask she looked younger and far more tired than the layered presence she had projected.
Lucy nudged a broken mask with the toe of her boot. "I vote we ban masks in the new rules. They make people theatrical."
Isha nodded vigorously. "And group singing. Especially the kind that tries to rewrite your thoughts. Rude and off-key."
Vespera studied the thinning mist beyond the gold light. "The territory is already stabilizing. Whatever shared will held this place is gone."
Serakel's third eye dimmed to a soft glow. "The Red Spires will have felt the Choir fall. So will the Drowned Market. Both will be adjusting their plans."
The Reverend Mother Superior looked at the colorless figures standing in neat rows. "At least they are quiet now. I will take silence over another verse."
Levi stood near the empty throne and felt the Sovereign Domain settle into the pale stone. The Hollow Choir no longer pushed back. It simply waited.
'Two free courts left on the old maps. One trades. One fights. Both already know we are coming.'
He turned to the Voice. "You will hold this place. The masks stay broken. The listening pillars are to be sealed. If anything tries to rebuild the old song, you will end it and report to me."
"Yes, Master," the Voice answered.
Lucy stretched her arms over her head until her shoulders cracked. "Decision time. Red Spires or Drowned Market? I am still voting for whichever one involves fewer musical numbers."
Isha raised a slime-coated hand. "Drowned Market. They tried to buy us off with a chest. I want to see what else they are willing to hand over before they panic."
Vespera's living eyes narrowed slightly. "The Red Spires are the stronger military force. Leaving them for last gives them time to dig in. Hitting them next removes the largest organized threat."
Serakel nodded. "Agreed. The Market will haggle. The Spires will fortify. Better to break the fortifications before they finish."
The Reverend Mother Superior glanced at Levi. "You already chose, did you not?"
Levi gave a short confirmation. "Red Spires next. The Market can keep its chest a little longer. I want the strongest remaining court under the mark before the others finish calculating."
Lucy grinned, sharp and ready. "Good. I was hoping for walls to climb and people who still think discipline will save them."
Isha looked only mildly disappointed. "Fine. But I am opening that tribute chest when we finally get there. Research."
Vespera already turned toward the eastern edge of the plaza. "The maps put the Red Spires six cycles north of the Choir's outer markers if we take the direct trenches. Four if we push and cut across the sulfur flats."
Serakel rolled a small, detailed map she had taken from the Black Maw. "The sulfur flats are unstable but faster. The hybrid will not mind the heat."
The pit-wyrm hybrid, still parked at the edge of the gold circle, gave a low rumble that might have been agreement.
The Reverend Mother Superior pulled her cloak tighter. "Of course we are taking the unpleasant route. Why would we not?"
Levi gave the Voice a final look. "Hold the Choir. Nothing leaves. Nothing enters without the mark's permission."
"As you command, Master."
The group formed up without further discussion. Lucy took her usual place on Levi's right. Vespera matched him on the left. Serakel, Isha, and the Reverend Mother Superior filled the line behind. The pit-wyrm hybrid rose and followed, claws scraping pale stone.
They left the Hollow Choir's plaza the way they had come, gold light carving a clean path through the remaining mist. The listening pillars stayed silent as they passed. By the time the group reached the outer edge of the Choir's territory the pale fog had already begun to thin permanently, as if the land itself was relieved to stop whispering.
The road north toward the Red Spires was a broken ribbon of dark stone and low sulfur vents. The air grew warmer with every span. In the far distance the first jagged towers of red rock were still only a rumor against the black sky.
Lucy matched Levi's pace, voice light again. "Six cycles or four, I am still stabbing the first one who tries to give a speech about independence."
Isha's slime formed a small, bouncing approximation of a tower, then flattened it. "I will help. Team effort."
Vespera's tone was dry. "Try to leave one or two able to report the new reality to the others. It saves travel."
Serakel's third eye glowed faintly as she studied the horizon. "The Spires already know we are coming. They will have something prepared."
The Reverend Mother Superior sighed. "They always do. It never works. That never stops them from trying."
Levi walked in the center of the formation, the Sovereign Sigil pulsing in steady anticipation.
'The Choir sang and fell. The Spires will try walls and discipline. The result will be the same. Neverland is running out of free courts that have not yet learned the new order.'
The group moved north across the broken stone, gold light traveling with them. Behind them the Hollow Choir remained quiet under the mark. Ahead of them the Red Spires waited with whatever welcome they thought would be enough.
...
The road north stretched across the sulfur flats in a broken line of dark stone and steaming cracks. Heat rose in shimmering wabes as the air carried the sharp scent of rotten eggs and hot metal.
In the far distance, the first jagged towers of the Red Spires rose like broken teeth against the black sky.
