Chapter 182: Sing It Then: I Am Listening
Levi listened from where he sat against the hybrid's side and said nothing. The banter was familiar now, a low constant that made the long dark stretches shorter.
The second cycle brought changes in the land. The gray dust darkened. Low pillars of pale stone began to appear at irregular intervals, each one carved with shallow mouths that seemed to whisper when the wind passed over them. The metallic taste in the air strengthened.
Vespera stopped at the first cluster of pillars and studied the carvings. "These are not warning markers. They are listening posts."
Serakel's third eye flared. "Something on the other end is awake and paying attention."
Isha poked one of the carved mouths with a cautious tendril of slime. The mouth closed with a soft click. She pulled the slime back, impressed. "Rude. I like it."
Lucy rested one hand on her blade. "The Choir knows exactly where we are."
"They have known since we left the Black Maw," Levi said. "Keep moving."
By the middle of the third cycle the pillars grew more frequent until they formed loose avenues. The dust underfoot turned almost white. In the distance a wide depression opened in the land, filled with a pale mist that did not move like ordinary fog. Faint sounds drifted out of it—too structured to be wind, too broken to be ordinary voices.
The Hollow Choir's territory.
The group stopped at the edge of the mist. The pit-wyrm hybrid growled low, copper-and-gold eyes fixed on the shifting pale curtain. The five women spread into a loose formation without needing orders.
Lucy's voice was quieter than usual. "That mist feels wrong."
Vespera nodded. "It is listening."
Serakel's third eye stayed fully open. "There are structures inside. Tall. Regular. And many moving signatures that do not match normal demons."
Isha's slime had gone still along her arms. "I cannot decide if I am excited or offended."
The Reverend Mother Superior studied the mist with narrowed eyes. "Whatever wears the white masks is waiting for us to step in first."
Levi looked into the pale curtain. The Sovereign Sigil pulsed once, stronger than before.
'They invited us. We are here. Time to hear the new verse.'
He stepped forward. Gold light from the Sovereign Domain pushed into the mist and carved a clear path wide enough for the group and the hybrid. The pale fog recoiled from the light but did not vanish. Faint voices rose and fell inside it, never quite forming words.
The five women followed him in. The pit-wyrm hybrid came last, clearly unhappy about the mist but unwilling to stay behind.
The world narrowed to the gold-lit path and the listening fog on both sides. The carved pillars continued inside, taller now, their open mouths turned toward the group as they passed. The metallic taste in the air became a low vibration against the teeth.
After a long stretch the mist thinned. A wide plaza of pale stone opened ahead of them. Dozens of figures stood in perfect silence across it. Each wore a smooth white mask without features. Their robes were the same colorless shade as the mist. None of them moved.
At the far end of the plaza a larger figure sat on a simple throne of the same pale stone. Its mask was larger, and thin cracks ran across the surface like veins. When it spoke the voice came from everywhere and nowhere at once, layered as if many throats shared the same words.
"You accepted the invitation," the layered voice said. "The song has been waiting."
Levi stopped in the center of the plaza. The five women halted with him. Gold light held the mist back in a clean circle.
Lucy muttered, "I already hate the acoustics."
Isha whispered, "If they start harmonizing I am dissolving the front row."
Levi's internal voice was calm and sharp.
'Finally. Let us see what kind of song can stand against the mark.'
He looked at the cracked white mask on the throne and spoke in a clear, carrying tone.
"Sing it then. I am listening."
…
The Hollow Choir answered.
Every white-masked figure in the plaza opened its mouth at the same time. No lips moved behind the masks. The sound that came out was not music. It was a layered pressure that tried to rewrite the air itself. The pale stone underfoot vibrated. The mist outside the gold circle surged inward like a living thing.
Lucy staggered half a step, then snarled and drew her blade. "I hate it already."
Vespera's living eyes narrowed. Northern cold flared around her in a sharp shell. "It is trying to get inside the ears and keep going."
Serakel's third eye blazed. "Not sound. Command. They are trying to overwrite intent."
Isha's slime rose in a thick collar around her own neck and ears, sealing them. "Rude. I did not give permission."
The Reverend Mother Superior raised both hands. Holy-gold light formed a thin dome over the group that made the layered voice thin and distant. "Keep talking. I will hold the worst of it."
Levi stood in the center of the gold circle and let the Sovereign Domain expand.

[Sovereign Domain: Intent Lock]
Gold light flooded outward in a hard pulse. The layered voice cracked. Several of the nearest white masks fractured down the middle. The figures wearing them staggered.
'Not a song. A leash. They tried to put it on the wrong neck.'
The figure on the throne lifted one hand. The remaining Choir members moved in perfect unison, robes whispering over pale stone. Some raised empty hands that suddenly held blades of condensed mist. Others simply walked forward with the steady pace of people who had never needed to hurry.
Lucy met the first rank with a wide, grinning cut that took two masks off at the jawline. The bodies underneath were pale and genderless, more mannequin than demon. They kept moving for a second after the masks fell, then collapsed like puppets with cut strings.
"They do not bleed right," Lucy called. "I find that offensive."
Vespera froze an entire cluster mid-step. Ice raced across their robes and locked them in place. "Neither do they thaw right. Convenient."
Serakel's force blades severed the mist weapons from three more before they could close. "The masks are the focus. Break those and the rest follows."
Isha's slime shot out in wide nets, wrapping small groups and squeezing until the masks cracked and the bodies went limp. "I am being gentle. Mostly."
The Reverend Mother Superior kept the holy-gold dome steady while the others worked. "Less commentary. More ending this."
The throne figure stood. The cracked mask tilted. The layered voice returned, louder and angrier, trying to push through the Sovereign Domain by sheer volume.
Levi walked straight toward it.
The Choir members between them threw themselves into his path. The golden barrier burned a clean lane through the middle. Masks blackened and split. Bodies dropped. The pit-wyrm hybrid finally lost patience and charged down one flank, crushing everything that did not move fast enough.
The throne figure raised both hands. Pale mist condensed into a single massive spear of white pressure and hurled it at Levi's chest.
The Sovereign Domain met it head-on.

[Sovereign Domain: Absolute Rejection]
The spear shattered into harmless fog. Levi kept walking. When he reached the throne he closed one hand around the figure's mask and poured gold light straight through it.
The layered voice screamed with many throats at once. The cracks in the mask raced outward. Gold veins spread across the pale surface like fire through paper.
