Chapter 405 - 340: Clue?
[Damn, do they only use their brains for eating? If you put that same dedication into your studies, you could’ve easily gotten a bachelor’s degree, right?]
[It takes all sorts to make a world! To the commenter above, all I can say is you’re even more ridiculous than these two old men!]
"Well then, my thanks to you both."
Seeing the two old men’s attitude, Wen Ying casually struck up a conversation with them.
"Does that Head Nurse have a husband?"
"Zheng Yao? That battle-ax? Who’d ever want a woman like that?" the old man said nonchalantly, holding a small bag of chicken feet in his hand.
"But, I noticed she seems to have a son?"
"You mean that cockroach monster? Isn’t he dead?"
As he asked this, the old man’s gaze shifted to Wen Ying. It was obvious he already knew she was the one who had taken care of the cockroach monster.
Awkward...
’But did I need to be embarrassed?’
’If you’re not the one feeling awkward, then it’s the other person who should be, right?’
"He is dead, but I have a feeling there’s more to it. A couple of days ago, I took a wrong turn and heard a man shouting the Head Nurse’s name. The next day, when the Head Nurse showed up, she was covered in injuries."
The old men, still holding their snacks, all looked at Wen Ying. One spoke in a grave tone, "Young lady, if you’re curious about this, we have to advise you to drop it right now! This isn’t something you should know. The two of us finally met a girl we click with; we can’t just watch you go get yourself killed, can we?"
’Click with?’
’More like you click with my food, right?’
But Wen Ying didn’t say it out loud. "That suicide note... have you two heard of it?"
The two old men frowned and shook their heads at her.
It was clear they couldn’t speak of it, not that they didn’t know.
"But... I have a mission. If I can’t complete it, I’ll die in this mental hospital just the same. And then..."
Wen Ying glanced at the snacks.
Even though she didn’t finish her sentence, the two old men understood what she meant.
All their future snacks would be gone.
But...
That matter was a hospital secret.
Although, it wasn’t a huge secret, since all of them—the "natives"—knew about it.
But for these humans, it was a huge secret.
"Young lady, it’s not that we don’t want to tell you, it’s that we can’t. You have to obey the rules, and we... have to do the same."
The old man who was speaking lifted the pillow on the hospital bed, pulled out a tiny picture book from underneath, and held it flat in his palm.
Then he walked over to Wen Ying and shoved the picture book into her hand.
"Young lady, you should go now. Stay any longer, and you’ll end up losing a limb or two."
Wen Ying turned and left, her movements crisp and efficient.
After gathering her things in the hallway, Wen Ying looked down at the picture book in her palm.
The cover of the picture book showed a drawing of a boy who looked human, but emblazoned on the front was a single large word: Monster.
Wen Ying found a corner to sit down in and opened the picture book. It was very thin.
She casually flipped through it; it only had three sheets, making a total of six pages.
Each spread consisted of a picture on one page and text on the facing page.
Each page of text had fewer than thirty words.
It was a picture book through and through.
But as she turned to the first page, Wen Ying immediately guessed. ’This must be a drawing of the person they’re so afraid of, isn’t it?’
’If I’m not mistaken, this must be the final boss of this mental hospital.’
He looked perfectly human. On the first page, he was indeed a normal-looking boy. As the pages turned, he grew up normally and even appeared to get married.
’But after he got married, his body started to distort?’
’The last page just showed a large, black silhouette?’
Just as Wen Ying closed the picture book, a line of text seemed to catch her eye. She reopened it to the last page. At the very bottom, someone appeared to have written something in pen.
’The room at the end of the hall?’
Wen Ying closed the picture book and walked toward the end of the hallway. As for the other rooms, she currently had no interest in "servicing" them.
The end of the hallway was dim. Even with some light, this particular door was still shrouded in shadow.
It was a plain, unadorned door, shut tight.
As Wen Ying stood before the door, she heard a voice. "Human, you want to go in this room? I’d advise you to forget about it. You won’t even leave bone fragments behind!"
A child’s head peeked out, calling out the warning to Wen Ying.
Wen Ying turned her head to look at the child. "Oh? Why is that?"
"Nyah nyah nyah, not telling you! Anyway, you’ll definitely die if you go in. She doesn’t like snacks, she only likes fresh, living humans like you~ You can go in if you want, but why don’t you give all your yummy treats to us instead? How about that?"
Wen Ying extended her hand, about to knock.
"Why aren’t you listening to us? This freak is even weirder than that dead Loli!" The voice was a little anxious.
