Dream Life

Episode 82: The End of a Civilization

Tria Calendar October 16, 2016.

I went inside the ruins and met the lord of the ruins. I'm just listening to that voice, to be exact, but I felt strongly that he did exist.

And they hear that this is a different space isolated from my little world, and that the flow of time is sixty times greater.

I chose to have a conversation with the Lord of voices who wanted to have a conversation as I saw how they came out.

I tried to create a dialogue, and I said, "Can I ask you a question here?" and cut the tantrum.

What is it?

It seemed to me like he was the teacher who answered the students' questions.

(Hi. Don't feel like you're talking to Dr. Raspade. I guess this guy is a researcher too......)

Refresh your mind and start asking questions.

"For starters, how long have you been here? In the world I was in, it means how many years ago."

'I don't know exactly, but I think it's about four thousand years old'

I couldn't hide my excitement about that fact.

"So, bye! He said you knew about the history we lost before it became the world we are today!

The Lord of Voices answers my excitement with pleasure.

'Lost History... You can certainly say that. After that “catastrophe” mess, sometime, it was a world like this...'

At the end of the day, I get the impression of being emotional, nostalgic, and then, objectively. But my curiosity never stopped.

"What does that mean? What the hell does" catastrophe ”mean?

'Right...... well, let me tell you whatever I can think of. My living age was a time of technological development called witchcraft. Magic engineering is the energy that makes up the world, we named it "Mana," a technology that converts it into a form that is easy to use. We built the technology, and we built a transfer system in the world called the Transition Gate. Now I think it was the right world to call it an ideal home......'

In his time, he seemed to use such peculiar techniques as a mixture of magic and science and technology called magic engineering to extremes prosperity. By means of a transfer system called the transfer gate, the network was stretched around the world to achieve logistics without time lags. Also, I freely took the energy that exists in nature that we call the "power of the Spirit," and used that power as a mechanical system, a support device like the Golem that I saw as a workforce. It also seemed to build information and communication systems like the Internet, which solved the problems of poverty and conflict, thanks to nearly infinite energy and a lossless communication system.

'... With a transfer gate, you can go anywhere in an instant. This eliminates the namesake barrier of “distance” between cities. The industrial revolution, with Mana as its energy source, took away the difference between the rich and poor between nations. Mana was an energy that existed everywhere and could be easily and massively removed. And it can be converted into all forms and can be easily used by anyone. We left the labor to the machines and put the extra time into creation and research that only we could do. And I immersed myself in it...'

(I don't think that would eliminate disputes between states. Maybe there's another reason. Sometimes this guy won't know, because it could be another form of spirit with us...)

'... but the world didn't last that long either. Yes, it has come to an end in just 500 years. "

"Five hundred years...... I think it's a pretty long time to me?

"Really? From our average life expectancy, it's only half a lifetime. '

Apparently, the ancients had an elf-like lifespan. If you think about it, it feels like fifty years of us humans. I might say it's short.

When I kept my mouth shut, he started talking again. I don't know if you were born or because you endured loneliness, but you seem to like a lot of stories. He slowly talks about himself as if he misses it.

'... back then, I was a researcher in life sciences. Every day I studied, especially trying to unravel the relationship between the human body and Mana...... of course, I had a family too. Yes, my beloved wife was always beside me... but that beloved wife suddenly fell ill. At that time, I never dreamed that my wife's disease would lead to the ruin of the world. But my wife's illness and the ruin of the world were the same cause...'

His wife's disease, he said, was a replacement for a completely different cell when the cells that make up the human body are regenerated by metabolism. Very slight error at first, but gradually the error increases and progresses at one point at a time. It's like one type of cancer, but fundamentally different is that organs made by new cells act as something else altogether. I mean, it was such a horrible disease, changing from one person to another.

'... I couldn't grasp the cause at first. The first thing our researchers thought about was a genetic anomaly. But that was often unexplained. It was too far from our knowledge, our common sense, to be compatible... but with information from somewhere else altogether, we began to understand a little bit of what was going on. We have seen the same phenomenon in every life, not only in us. Furthermore, not only the organism, but even the information had changed in serious areas. That's when we realized this wasn't just a disease...'

They found out that all the information was being rewritten and made the hypothesis that the very formation of the world was beginning to change. At first, they didn't see it as an absurd hypothesis. However, when a survey mission is dispatched to a highly changing area, spatial distortions are observed. And the fact that there was an influx of unknown energy was confirmed there.

'... and by the time I realized it, pollution was spreading all over the world. The network through the transfer gates is behind us. Of course, we had immunization too. But I didn't know what it was going to spread by...'

"What was the contamination spread by?

He replies' It's a mana 'as he squeezes it out.

"It was mediated by our energy source, Mana. Naturally, the energy that moves the portal is also mana. The contamination was increased by mana flowing from the contaminated area. '

All I could feel was despair from his voice. I could understand what he was thinking and couldn't say anything. He changed the subject, trying to change the bitter air.

'... the first aid I gave my wife, coincidentally, was to save me'

"What is a procedure?

"What I did was I brought her into the lab and slowed down the flow of time relative. And I myself studied how to save her in another lab. The lab I came into was the exact opposite of that lab, where time flowed fast. Yes, while slowing her progression, it was a procedure that took my research time... '

He isolated his wife in a place of fiftieth of the flow of time and, on the contrary, carried out research in a place of ten times the flow. Relatively, he would have gotten five hundred times as much time, and thought that if the research went well, he could save his wife.

"But we could not find a fundamental solution until the end. And for just one year, this is about the normal course of time, but in just one year, the world collapsed. Information and communication networks using networks and mana by means of transfer gates… We cut it off with our own hands. But a highly divided world could not have been established without mana... '

When asked in detail, the network by the Metastatic Gate had led to the development of low-cost logistics, so that everything, including food, was made in the place of optimal conditions. In the climate-stable medium latitude areas, cereals are made, in the south various fruits and spices are made, in the north industrial products are made… objects that were in the characteristics of their respective lands, and they are exchanged through the transfer gates. Its huge network had made people's lives come together. It is precisely the disconnection of a network that can be called the lifeline that has upset the supply and demand balance of supplies everywhere.

'We weren't holding hands either, but in a situation where we couldn't use mana-based equipment, the production of food was extremely difficult. There was a possibility of survival in marginally weather conditions. However, the result of the simulated analysis was that no matter what favourable conditions were given, civilization could not be maintained. I didn't actually confirm directly what happened. But as far as you're concerned, our civilization must have perished. That also matches the narrow range of findings I made. Maybe someone like me survives, but it's very unlikely'

"Why is that? If you have all this technology, isn't anyone else helping?

'As I said earlier, what I survived was a coincidence. I held this lab from before the catastrophe. Because acceleration and preservation were needed in the course of the study, but as a result, this lab was spared contamination. I didn't bring in anything contaminated except my wife's body. And I immediately discarded my wife's body. Take out her soul and her memory...'

"Take out your soul and your memory?

'Yes, as I said earlier, I couldn't find a way to save my wife. In the meantime, his wife's body gradually eroded. I made a relatively early decision to abandon her body. Because my research was the study of immortality by reconstructing the human body, transcribing souls and memories into artificial life'

"The study of immortality...... does that mean taking souls and memories out and transplanting them into a new body?

'Exactly. People's memories are in the brain. But where is the soul? You know what I mean?

I shook my head, "I don't know. But it seems we have a lot to think of as dwelling in the Demonic Crystal Stone," he replied.

"Demon Crystal Stone...... yeah? You mean the magic crystal? It's a crystal that can be removed from the organism, right?

I snort loudly.

"Magic crystal, the soul dwells in what you call the Magic Stone. That's what I thought too. And I was right. The proof is who I am now."

He thinks that the Demonic Crystal, their so-called Magic Crystal, will have a soul, and he seems to have developed a technique to extract it and transfer it to a new Magic Crystal. It was also able to retrieve memory directly from the brain and transfer it to a storage medium. Apparently, it was a fairly advanced civilization, going beyond the Earth of the early twenty-first century, where I was.

"The eroded wife's body was discarded for each lab where the procedure was performed. And they transferred the souls and memories they had taken to a clean, uncontaminated lab. I was isolated from the outside world for about sixty years because I was immersed in research. In other words, in the course of your time, it will mean three thousand years... '

He was immersed in the study of transferring his wife's soul and memory into an artificial life form, Homunculus, with the years flowing sixty years in his somatosensory time and three thousand years in the outside world. Meanwhile, no catastrophic contamination was found in this lab. The fact that the treatment he took was correct seems to refer to that.

"So you're saying that you were connected to the outside world a thousand years ago now? But why?

'A thousand years ago, twenty years ago here, but at that time I was in despair. I don't care what happens now. I was halfway out... yes, it was the day I admitted the fact that I couldn't get my wife back...'

He proceeded with the study of transferring his wife's soul and memory to Homunculus, transcribing her soul and memory to magical crystals and artificial brains.

'... she didn't come home. To be precise, my beloved, former wife no longer existed...'

His research worked and his memory was almost perfectly transcribed. But I failed about my soul. The transcription itself seems to have worked. But her soul, when she spent time with him, was not there.

'... in the excitement of success I shouted my wife's name. But she was confused and didn't even look at me. Yes, her soul was insane and broken in a prison called Magic Crystal. I didn't know what had happened. And in despair, I took a peek into the outside world with the intention of committing suicide...'

"Why has your wife's soul been broken? Was it the impact of the catastrophe?

'No, this is because of the mistakes I made. Inside the magic crystal is a world isolated from the outside world. My wife couldn't stand the loneliness. In fact, I didn't realize that until I transferred my soul. The only time I was disconnected from the outside was a very short time when I said I was connected to an input/output device. But even for that short time, loneliness was intolerable. In the dark, no sound, no smell, not even the concept of time. And so lonely that I even doubt my existence… I have sealed my wife in that lonely world. I didn't know, that's the only excuse I had. So, it was a desperate place......'

I couldn't even imagine and couldn't say anything.

"I erased my own soul and my memory and thought of dying. But I wondered what happened to the outside world before I died. I don't care if there's an anomaly in the lab, it's none of my business if you're willing to die. So I decided to satisfy my own curiosity before death. And it's connected to the outside world... the impact on the lab I was concerned about, but it didn't make a big (...) impact. I modified the machine in the lab and surveyed the area...... '

He built a small exploration device and spent decades, for him, a year or so investigating the area. They just couldn't make the flying type, and it looks like they just surveyed parts of the northern realm of the Caerm Empire, around a hundred km square.

'... I concluded in that “catastrophe," that, at least, in this “third continent," our civilization is collapsing'

"Why is that?

'First of all, the community of life engineers I was in had vanished without leaving a trace. Besides, when we were here, there were no mountains here four thousand years ago. And there were no bigger mountain ranges to the east either. The same goes for this neighborhood, but there must have been many communities in the east.'

"The Saeum Mountains, and the Aquila Mountains weren't there... are you saying that the terrain has changed due to crust fluctuations or something?

'Perhaps you're right. Where our community was, it was a beautiful place surrounded by woods and lakes. Another reason why I thought our civilization had collapsed'

I said, "Besides the terrain?," he said in his mouth.

'That's right. Another reason is that the people who live here have decided that our technology, magic engineering, cannot be used. But seeing you changed my mind...'

"What makes that“ magic engineering technology ”unusable? And why would I have anything to do with that?

He forgot the bitterness just before that and mouthed the answer with a little pleasure.

"Your countrymen are incomplete. We have only observed it from a distance so far, but we found no presence with complete affinity for Mana. And today, I met a being with complete affinity for you, and I changed my mind."

"Is it affinity with Mana? Could it have something to do with my being able to use the magic of all attributes?

'Exactly. A little different, to be exact… My interpretation is that what reproduces the theory of magic engineering in the human body is "magic”. In fact, we could handle all the mana. Very rarely were some physically unable to handle it, but it was the same as the innate blind and deaf, who were treated as congenital disorders. And to the extent I investigated, there were only congenital disorders, or incomplete ones. I wonder, therefore, whether our civilization has not been inherited here and our own civilization has developed. But when I saw you, I changed my mind a little. You have the same qualities as us. [M] He understood my explanation more or less. So I wondered if our civilization might be inherited somewhere.'

(That sounds like something awkward to talk about. Should we get back on topic......)

I'll ask you more questions to get back to the subject.

"You said you were desperate a thousand years ago and tried to kill yourself. But I've been in this lab for twenty years since then. Why is that?

"There was still a catastrophic impact. That's faster to look at. Open the back door and take a look inside."

I opened the back door, as they told me. There was a golem, a "walker” sitting there.

"Look behind that walker, around the waist. You must see something interesting. '

I turned around behind the walker and looked at the waist, as I was told. There was a small letter written there.

(Does it even say the serial number or the manufacturer? Yeah? This!

The letters I saw were a line of cod letters I had previously seen in Professor Raspade's lab.

'That letter is not what we use. Yes, it still had an impact. And the impact is also in this lab. All the materials I had had had turned into cod. Including what remains on the storage medium. I was interested. I wonder what it was that took my wife. To find out, I immersed myself in that research......'

"So did you find out? What do you call a catastrophe?

After a small laugh, he says, 'In the end, I didn't know anything'.

'My life expectancy is about to run out, but in the end, I have no idea what happened or who did. Not even a clue. Well, I'm a researcher in life engineering, not familiar with history or civilization theory......'

He realized it was impossible to find out the cause by his own thought, and he wanted to tell someone about his existence and what had happened to this world before death. He dared to make the walkers stand out for it, and directed researchers with a high level of intelligence to come.

'I would have invited the woman who was with you if I had, but I realized what I meant by you. I think it's you who have the same qualities as us who should convey my thoughts.'

I didn't answer anything to that. He won't be expecting an answer either.

I then asked a lot of questions.

He answered my question politely. What is magic engineering? What is the Third Continent? When did their civilization begin? What did you eat and what were you thinking... when you realized, there was no context, you were asking about various things.

Since he came to this lab, about a few hours later, he's been slowly cutting it out.

'It's a good time, but it looks like it's time to run out. I changed the course of time to invite you. The energy to put it back under the influence is critical... just one thing, I'll teach you some interesting technology. You should be able to operate dimensionally without the help of the device System. It's the theory we were using...'

That's what he said, he taught me the art of creating and manipulating cross-dimensional spaces like this lab. Yes, it's a handy magic thing called an item box, an inventory, etc.

'... reason isn't that hard. All you have to do is modulate the flow of space-time and connect different spaces. You understand the rationale around here, don't you?

"I don't understand, but I can do the image. Can I do it here?

'Of course I'm fine. Because we used it normally.'

I nod small and create an image.

It interferes with different spaces with the concept of space-time continuum used in SF and the like. At first it was difficult to modulate the flow of space, but listening to his advice, it got a little better.

And finally completed the different spaces.

"Excellent! I didn't know you could do it in this short time without the aid of a machine... the rest is easy. As I explained earlier, that space is like a bubble. As long as I have an anchor anchor that says you, I can call you anytime. I don't think I need to teach you how to use it, but I'll tell you what to do just in case. '

The precautions were simple.

Inbound and outbound control functions of auxiliary devices are used to control the quantity of goods and so on, but there is no such convenience here. So we need to remember what we put in. If you don't, you won't know what's in there and you won't be able to take it out.

'I wish I'd seen you a little sooner. Yes, about ten years ago...'

Ten years before he said it was five hundred years ago for me. Naturally, it's an impossible story, but I didn't say a word to deny it.

"Right. I think I wanted to talk to you a little more. Now I want to go home to my people."

'Right. The last thing you have here, you should take whatever you want. There's a lot of unusable stuff, but if the life of the lab runs out, it just disappears in different spaces. If you want something, don't hesitate to take it.'

I thank him and throw experimental tools and more into the newly remembered storage magic Inventory. Even so, there wasn't that much stuff. Except for the original items, they were disposed of for fear of contamination, and there were only a few experimental devices and materials that were rewritten that I was willing to take home.

I tried to take Walker, the golem in the back room, but I couldn't move it anymore because I use the energy from this lab. I gave up crying because it was just too big to get into the inventory.

"That's enough," I said, heading to where I was standing when I came in. Along the way, he has reluctantly suggested.

How about the artificial life form Homunculus? I have erased my memories, but I am capable enough. Hopefully, you'll take it... '

"But..."

When I talk, he's been recommending Homuncles even more.

'That shows absolute loyalty to the owner. It should always help what you are about to do. [M] As I said earlier, I have absolutely no problem with my abilities. The acquisition of skills should also take a short time…'

Homunculus' physical ability is about five times that of a standard human being. And, of course, all attributes can be used about magic.

Still, I refused to take him.

"But wasn't this look made to look like your wife? Then it feels best to be with you."

I used words that cared for him, but I had concerns I hadn't told him.

If the catastrophic effects remain, what will happen to this homunculus? Will it ever degenerate and strip us of our fangs? That's what I was worried about.

'Right... right. Surely you should disappear with me. Thank you for your concern. "

I bowed my head.

"I will never forget that I met you. I hope to see your wife's soul again."

'Oh, thank you. Sounds like time, then. It's good to meet you. So...'

The next moment, I was being sent back to the outside world.

Outside, in front of a closed door, the Liddies were forced to shed magic or knock with their fists in an attempt to open the door. I seem to have been put back behind them, and they in a hurry, they didn't notice me.

"It's all right now. I'm home."

When I say that, they all look back together.

And Liddy jumped into my chest with tremendous momentum.

"I was worried! I was really worried about you!

I hugged her so hard,

"I'm sorry. But you'd have come right back, wouldn't you?

The outside world hasn't been five minutes since I disappeared.

I told Mr. Kitley, "This ruin door will never open again. Digging here, there won't be anything in there," he says.

She said she heard a lot about it, but she just looked at me and nodded small.

I said, "Well, let's go back."

Everyone nods and goes into the woods.

I look back at the cliff only once. Then he lowered his head small and started walking again.

We followed the ruins and returned to the city of Hollywell through the village of Hollockwood.

That night I told everyone what I saw in that lab.

Ms. Kitley had listened to the excitement at first, but gradually regained her calm, and at the end of the day she shut up feeling like thinking about it.

He asked me if I had read such air and why Liddy hadn't taken Homunculus out.

"The primary reason is“ pollution ”concerns. He said the artifact, Homunculus, doesn't degenerate, but it's a“ life-form ”when it comes to artifice. You can't bet on that."

Liddy nods convincingly, but makes a slightly mean face,

"But you were beautiful. And he said he'd listen to anything you say. It's not a man's dream. That's what he said."

I've been poking where I bought it, where it hurts.

To be honest, if I hadn't met the Liddies, I might have taken the risk out knowingly. If that beautiful woman is going to be what she wants, a man should definitely get lost. But I wasn't lost. Because there are Liddy and the others who love me with all their heart.

Still, there was resistance to honestly putting it into words.

"Right. I did something without my body. Unlike Liddy, you won't say anything."

To my word, she makes a pointy mouth and a stubborn look.

"You say such mean things. Fine. I'll put you in trouble for saying more about me."

So we erupted at the same time.

(I can have such a conversation without other love. This is the happiest thing for me. So what more do we need to ask for…)
