Dream Life

Episode XV: Inside the Empire (Previous)

Tria history March 13, 2018.

A Marquis Seawell envoy left the village of Rasmore with a regular distilled liquor flight (Scotchliner).

I am supposed to have good relations with Viscount Ignacious Radford, the representative, and to help me procure ingredients. In particular, they were to be sent spices, olive oil and even citrus fruits from the South.

These products are also available via the commercial city of Aurelia, but they are very expensive and of even less good quality. Instead, we are supposed to send bottle-aged wines from here.

When we talk about this, it seems like we're only talking about booze and knobs, but we're also properly purchasing information on empires, etc. Especially the Viscount, a heavy town of the Marquis Seawell family with a territory near the Imperial capital and a kinship with the imperial chamber, knew a lot of back information.

Of course, it won't unconditionally disclose it to me, and I have thoughts over there, but I'm very grateful to still have information on Imperial Capital that has no handover at all.

Of all the information obtained this time, the most valuable was information about the faction of senior aristocrats. The Lockhart family is a Knight Sir who falls under the umbrella of the Ladswell Border Uncle family, but because the nickname was sold, there are quite a few pull-outs from outside the Border Uncle family. Of course, my father refuses all of that, but his opponent is a senior aristocrat above the Marquis and can't do anything bad.

In addition to adding Sharon to the story on behalf of his secretary, he was able to hear a lot about the nobles and the upper ranks of the army from the Viscount and his clerks, Ledley Sutherland and Bernard Durnton, and Osborne Towerdin, a martial officer.

As for the Imperial Army, I was particularly interested because of the presence of troops in Lukes in April. Of course, I was in the academic city of Doctus, so I've known about the outline of the Imperial Army since before I heard about them. However, it is very helpful to hear about the composition of the upper ranks of the army and their membership.

By the way, common sense about the Empire, it has a population of about 10 million and is the largest nation in the world. To a large extent, the Empire is divided into five blocks: each region between East, West and North and the Meadow Zone in the centre.

Of these, the southern region with the Imperial capital Plymouth has the largest population, accounting for about five million people and half of the population. There are about two million northern areas with Welburn, about one and a half million in the eastern area bordering the Kingdom of Kaum, about one million in the western area bordering Luke, and another about half a million in the central meadow area.

Due to its relationship with the Imperial Capital, the Southern Region consists of the territory of the Marquis or more senior nobles in a royal kinship with the Emperor's direct jurisdiction, and here is also the territory of the Marquis Seawell family.

In the northern and eastern regions there is the Governor's Office, governed as Governor by Borderline Uncle, who has the same authority as the Marquis. As for the western part of the country, the Governor's office had previously existed, but the Governor's office had been abolished during the founding of Luke's Holy King. Rather, the Western Governor's Office was obliterated from the history of the Empire for every existence, as the Western Governor's Office was part of the independence movement of the Light Divinity and the then Western Governor was the foundation of the Holy King's House, the head of secularism.

Central Meadow Zone, but here lives a horseback riding nation with autonomy and a Centaur tribe classified as beastmen, with little interference from the imperial government either. Autonomous, but loyal to the emperor is said to be more than in the southern region. They take part in the war only under the emperor's life, and they mention many medals, and they are proud of that.

An Imperial Army organization, but the Regular Army has 20,000 troops per legion as its largest unit. The legion consists of ten regiments consisting of two thousand men, one regiment consisting of four battalions, twenty squadrons and a hundred platoons. One platoon has twenty men and no army like the army of the northern governor's office. All of them are combat personnel.

The basic regiment consists of three squadrons of rear support units consisting of ten cavalry squadrons, a thousand squadrons, five squadrons of spears, two squadrons of archers, a hundred healers and two hundred heavy units.

It is characterized by a strong cavalry-centered attack power. However, there is a strong law of annihilation in the field, but the cavalry center means I am not good at siege warfare. In addition to specialized units that use broken castle hammers and stone throwers, court magicians are to be formed during the siege.

The emperor's direct jurisdiction in the southern region, where the Imperial capital Plymouth is located, includes the Knights of Kingsguard, which protects the Imperial Palace, and the Regiment of First to Tenth, which is the regular army.

There are other direct defense units that defend aristocratic territory, but there are only about a thousand soldiers even in the Duke's house, where the emperor fears rebellion and has a population of 200,000, closer to the police organisation than to the army. However, urban defence units under the command of the regular army are stationed in important cities such as those that are a major traffic shock.

Characteristic of each regiment, the First Regiment is an elite and emperor who protects the imperial capital. Other Regular Army Legion Chiefs come from the Imperial Family, the Duke's House, and the Marquis's House, and when the Crown Prince is set up, he remains the head of the Second Legion. The Second Corps is an army that will be deployed as an attacking army, and as such the Crown Prince will assume command of the expedition.

The Second Regiment, with extensive experience in action, is elite, but its abilities are quickly diminished when the quality of the Crown Prince, the head of the Regiment, is poor. Originally, meritocracy pervaded, with some civilians in the regimental chief, but the Crown Prince's ability has been low for the past few years, with talented people not wanting a second legion.

Other princes, but they need to gain the status of Legion Leader with strength, but if they show competence, they can replace him as an incompetent Crown Prince.

Because the eastern region borders the friendly kingdom of Kaum with the mercenary country of Fortis, a perennial neutral state, it is relatively peaceful and there is no such organization as the army of the northern governor general's office. The army of the land is organized by territory and is called the Earl of Furfree Army, the Viscount of Paris Star Army, etc., and mainly conducts policing activities.

Currently, the western region closest to the battlefield, but there are numerous fortified cities here to stop the expansion of Lukes, and defense forces are organized for each city. They take the name of the city and commanders dispatched by the regular army under the names of the Lark Hill Regiment and the Sutton Battalion are in command.

This fortified city, but based on the castle city in the Empire Expansion Period, has a low defense of the expansion. This is because the soil attribute magician is less capable than before, and although it is a double walled, the outer walls are often wooden.

The city of Lark Hill, whose name appears here, is a stronghold for the invasion of the Holy King of Lukes, a fortified city east of the rugged Moenian Mountains. This time again, after gathering and regrouping our troops in this city, we march on Lukes.

This Lukes march, but it's retaliation for the plot that occurred in the northern part of the Empire. I mean, the incident in Wellburn that got us involved last September, too.

In this official announcement, “Harrison Gannell", Viscount Tysburn's subordinate, conspired with Luke to kill Raswell Border Uncle and multiply that confusion by plotting to make the northern regions of each United Cities State, including Aurelia, independent.

In contrast, he said it was the result of his breath when the emperor and his surroundings imposed sanctions on Luke, who tried to divide the empire. In fact, it was Viscount Radford's view to punish the Raswell Border Uncle for failing to prevent the outbreak of the plot.

"It's a hassle. There's already substantial damage to Luke. Yet in this battle, more than 70% of the Northern Governor's army must enter the battle. I wonder if His Excellency Mr. Borderline will also suffer from the maintenance of law and order in a vast territory. Rumor has it we're hiring a lot of mercenaries from Mercenary Country (Fortis), so it looks like we've already been hit, but it should be financially painful..."

Borderline Uncle's political enemies were unable to denounce Borderline Uncle by standing up for the hand of Borderline Uncle Aurella - the commercial city of Aurella and the commercial guild's denunciation statement to Luke and the imposition of economic sanctions.

In fact, there is information in it that this effect appeared at the beginning of the year and that a large number of personnel took place in the Holy King's Palace, the administrative province of Lukes.

The troublesome thing is that the northern governor has always been suspected of rebellion by the emperor, and the senior nobles attached to it, saying he has become this troop outpost.

"The only salvation is that there will be a third army. Which means His Royal Highness the Crown Prince is not the Commander-in-Chief..."

The current Crown Prince Gigismundo is twenty-six years old, and if he only looks with golden hair on his carved deep face and thick chest plates, he is hailed as a military god, but because of his incompetence, his character is brutal and has no popularity at all. As the Empress's home is a powerful Duke family, some nobles support it, but they are already in such a dangerous position that rumors of abandonment have been made many times. So much so that it is rumored that Siegfried XXI, the current emperor of the Fearful Wife's family, will just not be abolished because he is reluctant to the Empress.

"The commander of the Third Army is His Highness Leopold. Your Highness is young, but he listens carefully to his men. You won't let a soldier die in vain in this war."

Unlike Crown Prince Gigismund, Prince Leopold is a concubine born of a mother of low status, twenty-five years younger than the Crown Prince. The popularity of soldiers and citizens is high due to the common appearance of a constant bright expression and the breadth of the metric of listening carefully to the advances of his men.

The Viscount gave him an uneasy look, even though he said so, only for a moment. "I hope His Highness Leopold wins too much in this war..." he murmured when he pointed out.

(incompetent and hopeless brother and competent and hopeless brother. I guess he's afraid of the possibility of a dispute between the Crown Prince and the Crown Prince. As far as I'm concerned, when they say brutal personality, I'd rather Prince Leopold be my next emperor... well, if the firepowder hadn't flown this far, it wouldn't really affect either one of us to be emperors...)

Though I think so, the Lockhart family is no longer anonymous because of me.

(I don't know when or when the Emperor will see me. You should be careful. Or you want to say that in the dark, Master Ignacious...)

Not to mention for the development of the Seawell family, Viscount Radford doesn't have to worry about me personally, but I guess he's advising me personally because he's a drinking buddy.

I guess the difference in identity, age, would be a wall by nature, but enough to be able to call it a friendship through a common hobby, or “booze," with Viscount Radford. Until the second day, I called him "Lord Viscount," but now I call him "Master Ignacious” first name.

Not only did the Viscount love wine, he was a respectable gastronomer. As well as the famous restaurants of the Imperial City, they visit various places as the name of the Marquis of Seawell, and in doing so they are bound to mouth their specialty dishes.

Jokingly, "Why don't they make a book of your thoughts on Master Ignacious? I'm sure it will help a lot of people," he said, not even looking full, "that might be interesting," he laughed.

(Politically, you have a good relationship with me, but this Viscount really loves booze and gastronomy. I can trust these people more......)

I say to the Viscount, "As far as I can tell, the Empire will prevail in this battle," and the Viscount brightens his earlier uneasy expression, "May I ask why?" "I'd love to hear it too," said Martial Officer Towerdin behind him.

I think my mouth slipped, but I immediately nodded and explained why.

"First, the commander is competent, isn't he? If His Royal Highness Leopold is as competent as rumors say, there's nothing like defeating him even if he doesn't win. Such military morale is high, so that alone is advantageous."

The Viscount and Towerdin nod so much.

"It's advantageous to have enemies confused more than that..."

Here's what I think.

This time the Holy King's Palace, the administrative province of Lukes, is in disarray. Luke, the basic tactic of the Holy Kingdom is mass manoeuvres with the massive input of peasant militias. And it will be the military organization that supports it, namely the Holy King's House, which has jurisdiction over secular soldiers other than the Holy Knights and clergy. This means that the recruitment and deployment of peasants is unlikely to be smooth in the current state of confusion in the Holy King's Palace.

"… I can tell you this is a very successful plot by Lord Borderline."

The Viscount nodded, "Though that doesn't seem to be all," he asked for further reasons.

"Difficulties in replenishment will be fatal in terms of plotting."

When Towerdin asked, "What does the difficulty of replenishing have to do with this plot?" I ask.

"This time, Aurelia stands out and can't support you. It's Lukes, who wasn't originally that wealthy. Without Aurelia's support, you should also have difficulty securing supplies. Moreover, the sea transport is carried out by Aurelia vessels, so there should be an obstacle to the transport of supplies…"

The commercial city of Aurelia uses the Holy Kingdom of Lukes to prevent the spearhead of the Empire from being directed against us. The support that stood out was not originally provided, but the merchants were supported by commercial guilds, supplying Lukes with supplies.

This disturbance is preventing merchants belonging to Aurelia from doing business with Luke. Some merchants, though few, do not belong to Aurelia, but only the merchants of Aurelia or their rivals, the merchants of Periplus, own large ships.

Peripulus is not contending for hegemony with Luke, but Peripulus, a maritime nation, doesn't care if the Empire wins, but Luke wins. Prior to that, there was no reason to put your shoulder in the lux supported by your rival, Aurelia.

You'd want Luke to trade as a customer if he was rich and paid well, but Luke is basically a poor country and not a tasteful business partner without his sponsor, a commercial guild. For this reason, it is unthinkable that Periples would support Luke.

"If you're going to give me another reason, the Light Divine Church's mouth on war will be a winning factor......"

The Order of the Light God has a priesthood unit that is a cavalry, the Holy Knight, and a sorcerer's unit, but without any decent tactical ideas, he just shoots magic all he wants. Grandfathers and brothers who have actually fought say that they do not feel threatened at all, be they holy knights or priests.

Of course, if there are peasant militias who have lost their fears with drugs, the magic of just releasing them appropriately would be a sufficient threat, but when it comes to cavalry, the Holy Knight, who is just a turret to travel on horseback, cannot be the enemy of the powerful cavalry of the Caerm Empire, and priests with no defense whatsoever should be able to ravage it easily without a wall of flesh.

"... I mean, not only will the crime scene be disrupted if the denomination speaks up, but it will crush its own power of war at will"

The Viscount said, "I see. So you mean a big victory this time," he murmurs.

I didn't think, and I said, "I don't know where it is." Towerdin tilts his neck, "Though there is no element of our army losing as far as Sir's word is concerned".

I shook my head, "I think it would be conditional if the Imperial Army had a single rock and set a good strategic goal," I replied to that question.

As the Viscount is concerned, if there is a Crown Prince and a Crown Prince, the Crown Prince should come in the way of Prince Leopold winning too much. If strategic goals such as how far we will attack before then, which points we will occupy, and whether occupation is permanent or temporary, even if we win temporarily, we will eventually be isolated within the enemy nation and eventually defeated.

"... I hope someone understands that around His Highness Leopold. Worst of all, the northern governor's office may be sacrificed."

What I fear is that this march is also an enemy of Patrick, who was the man of Uncle Borderline.

Uncle Borderline himself should be breaking it off with my persuasion, and he, a good ruler in the first place, shouldn't be forced to do it with personal grievances. This march, however, is not directed by Uncle Borderline himself, but by Baron Manfred Braceford, the First Knight Commander.

(Baron Braceford is an honest bloodthirsty man, to put it badly, because he's a neat pig warrior if you assume. I hope it doesn't do a lot of damage...... I hope around Associate Baron Gateskel accompanies him as a staff officer, but he probably can't...)

If the Northern Governor's Office Army suffers significant damage in this war, it is likely to affect the Lockhart family as well. The most likely thing is the possibility that his brother Rodrick will gain territory near Welburn and take up a key position in the Knights.

My brother was twenty years old, but he is already a hero with two names: "Giant Slayer", and he is married to the beloved daughter of Uncle Borderline. Just look at the merits. The baron position is difficult. If it's about an associate baron, you'll get it soon. In that case, the seat of the next lord here in the village of Rasmore will be vacant. Naturally, my second son, I will be the lead candidate.

(I like this village, but given what lies ahead, it's hard to get tied up. If I had to take Luna into a fugitive life, the title of next lord would only make it difficult to move... troublesome...)

Though I deserved it, I was somewhat tired of getting caught up in politics, whether I liked it or not.
