Dream Life

Episode Six: Funnel

Tria history January 3, 319.

Finish your stay in Ars and leave for Imperial Capital today.

In this world, there is no idea of a sunset like Japan, and if we celebrate New Year's Day on New Year's Day, work begins the next day. We also dated the Dwarves' banquet on New Year's Day, but there was no big banquet yesterday, just a farewell party at the rally hall. For some reason the queen had come with patience, but no one was uncomfortable.

The altitude rises further from Ars to the southern border funnel. As a result, the cold becomes harsher, and this season's funnels are the first difficulty in the Kaum kingdom.

Fortunately, the snow accumulation itself is less than at the foot of the Aquila Mountains, with fewer obstacles to passage due to snow. However, there are many accidents caused by freezing, and the passage of carriages requires careful attention.

Two hundred kilometers to Imperial Farfree, ahead of the Funnel Pass, are planned on an itinerary that takes ten days to travel.

I received a grand drop-off of the Dwarves in front of the South Daimon of Ars.

"Don't even come home! Ulrich Drexler's voice sounded," I'll wait for you! "The voices overlap.

"Depending on the circumstances, I think it will take five months. Well, wait for the temper."

On this itinerary, after attending the ceremony of the Duke in the Imperial capital Plymouth, he is to head northwest on the central street to Welburn, where the northern governor's office is located.

to this wellburn, but Kilnarek is the best reason to be a territory.

Kilnarek is one of the cities of the Union of Urban States created by the Commercial Guild, but it is also the territory of the Raswell Border Uncle family. For this reason, it wasn't even a name change, but it required a lot of procedures and I needed to go to Wellburn.

Of course, even without it, he would have gone to greet his brother and sister Rosalee, even without Kilnarek, as he was also the home of her brother-in-law, Rosalee, and the “foster parent" who further assigned her grandfather as a knight. But Welburn is more than a thousand kilometers away from Plymouth, and travelling alone takes nearly forty days.

Further, to return from Welburn to the village of Rasmore, it would be shorter and easier to use Aurelia Street, which connects the commercial city of Aulera with the adventurer's city of Periclitle, but as things stand, unless the security deteriorates badly and the situation dramatically improves, we will adopt a route into Kaum via Fortis, the mercenary country.

In this case, it should be more than a thousand and three hundred kilometres from Welburn to Ars, and about two months from going through Fortis, where there are many more rugged mountain paths.

In other words, five months is the nearest number of days, and our expectation was that it would take more than six months.

I leave Ars while the Dwarves drop me off.

The harsh cold cuts him off, but now he manipulates the horse in a clear mood under the sunny winter weather.

Five days after leaving Ars, the streets were in a rugged mountain path.

For the past five days, bandits have not even raided demons, but peace itself. There was no worsening of the weather I was even more worried about, and the wind blowing from the Porta Mountains visible on my right hand side has not caused any problems at all.

January 8th the following day. One row of the Lockhart family enters the deep woods where conifers thrive, proceeding between cut cliffs. The neighborhood hits the source of the Great River Fatas, but the river is narrow, with no shadow of the lazy Great River at all.

Due to the shade of coniferous trees and the mountains of Porta Mountain, the sun barely touched even during the day, and the street surfaces froze the tightened snow, allowing the horses to take their feet.

"Everybody, get down! Put a leader on the carriage and let it proceed with caution!

When my father commands that, they all descend from the horses. The feeling from the bottom of the boot was harder ice than snow.

I have proceeded only about fifteen kilometres because I proceeded with caution that day, but by then I have earned enough distance, so I have no problems with the itinerary. If there's a problem, it's just the weather after tomorrow.

From around here, there are no rural areas because of the rugged mountainous areas. However, the street traffic is considered and the accommodation is maintained.

This lodging, but about the size of two hundred meters square, is surrounded by wooden walls. There are only a few lodgings for about fifty people, stables and carriage storage areas, and street guard stuffs. Street Guards are packed with about fifty soldiers, but they're not actively crusading demons.

After entering the inn, I asked the old man, also the master of the inn, about the weather after tomorrow and he said it would be the coldest this winter.

"It should last about three days. Bye. The streets will freeze completely too..."

After entering the inn, key members of the Lockhart family and Viscount Ignacious Radford and escort captain Osborne Towerdin will confirm their plans for tomorrow and beyond.

"There's plenty of room for an itinerary to the Imperial City, but it's no fun to be stopped here for days."

My father is also nodding aloud when the Viscount says so.

"The next place to stay is fifteen km (Kimmel). It's a mountain road, but it's a good distance to get around on foot. I'm anxious about the carriage, but fortunately my son's wheels are less slippery than wooden objects. I thought we should leave tomorrow."

The Viscount nods, "Right," but sends his gaze toward me, "What is Lord Zacharias's opinion? I've heard."

"I agree with my father. This situation was assumed beforehand, so the load on the wagon has been reduced to about half normal. I was wondering if I could do something about Ignacious' carriage."

My idea is to attach a spike to the wheel.

The normal carriage wheels are made of wood but have an iron frame fitted to the outside. Spike that iron frame with metallic magic and it will be enough for anti-slip.

Explaining a brief concept, the Viscount approved, "Then let us ask Lord Zacharias to work in detail," and decided to proceed tomorrow.

Spike on the Viscount's carriage wheels during the night. When it comes to spikes, it's not spiky, it's just a couple of millimeter protrusions with reference to spike tires that used to be there.

The next day, as predicted by the old man at the inn, he had been severely chilled in the morning. Leaving around 8am, but light snow tingles and occasional strong cold winds.

The snow that was accumulating in the harsh cold last night was bursting and the wachi made by the carriage was completely icing.

Not so dangerous today to pull the horse from the start and walk, but the carriage is still slipping flat and sideways. Still not as slippery as you can't control.

Although the Viscount's carriage also slipped from time to time, there seemed to be no major problem.

Check everyone's physical condition during the break, but with no particular problems, they arrived at their next accommodation around 4 p.m.

"You don't seem to have a problem with this. The horses don't seem to be burdened either."

We left, but a lot of the merchants were looking at the departure. In the case of the merchants, it was necessary to increase the per load and lower the cost, and the frozen funnel could not be challenged in a situation like today's.

If the carriage is damaged along the way, we need to abandon the merchandise or camp. I don't know exactly, but it's life-threatening to camp in a jar that's going down to nearly ten degrees below freezing.

January 10.

I wake up in the harsh cold today. Though the sunshine seemed occasional outside, fine snow like powdered snow kept falling.

"I'll be over the funnel in two days. The weather will recover tomorrow, so it's a day of patience. All of you, don't get distracted, proceed with caution!

In my father's words, "Ooh!" The voice goes up. I have already pulled my horse for two days and climbed the mountain path, but I do not see any noticeable fatigue on the part of my young squire or vigilante.

"From here on out, the Royal Kaum Army is barely even in there. Pay attention to the surrounding woods, not just your feet! Dan, keep the horse and get ahead of him! Zach and Beatrice are Dan's followers! Then let's go!"

The funnel is at a high altitude, with a particularly severe gradient ahead, and the path of ninety-nine "contours" breaking continues. As a result, the outlook is poor.

It is said that there are few large, dangerous demons, but even those of us with a lot of escorts could be targeted because the merchants have barely moved in the cold of the last two days.

In the morning things are going well and going about seven kilometers as planned. There are lodgings every fifteen kilometers around here, so we just leave eight more kilometers.

On several occasions he enters a resting-place square by the street, where he takes a break. Due to high altitudes, or shorter time to breathe than yesterday.

It's just a break, but the magic of the pseudo-perche effect is very helpful. Maintaining and recovering health is easier because you can eat a warm meal without lighting up at lunch.

There are more people than usual, but they put a large pot in the carriage, so they can make a warm soup without any problems as long as they have the ingredients.

Viscount Radford, who is accustomed to traveling, is also greatly impressed with this,

"I would love to have Lord Zacharias accompany me on my winter journey. It's painful to keep trembling in the cold."

"I was surprised when I started going into the woods with you in Doctus, too. But it's also convenient to be around in the summer, Zach. I don't need to drink warm water. Besides, I can't stop cooling my beer to the brisk."

That's what Beatrice laughs at, "You sure do, Lord Beatrice," the Viscount laughs too.

At the end of the break and back on the street again, Beatrice raised a warning voice just enough to go on.

"I smell blood coming from up ahead! Dear Hall, give me your instructions!

I don't feel it, but they smell blood coming from the wind. Dan, who is ahead of us, hasn't found the enemy yet either.

"I'll intercept you on this occasion! Everybody, put up your weapons! Keep the horses with the John's! Rod! You take command of the rear! Attention, Lord Ignacious! Zach! You go ahead with Dan, Beatrice! Report as soon as you understand! Lydia and Sharon stand by the carriage! Mel! You intercept here with me! You got it!

Each of them answers "Roger" to the order to be given early in the arrow succession and scatters it all over the holding area.

I'll catch up with Dan with Beatrice, too, and take the streets carefully. About two hundred meters ahead, even my nose smelled blood, and I heard bitter horse groaning.

"Looks like you're ahead," they both nod to agree.

"The three of us are going to see how it goes. If it's an enemy out of hand, me and Beatrice will buy us some time. Dan reports to his father. If we're going to be able to handle this alone, we're going to end it."

After hearing the two "Copy" voices, they approach each other using the shade of a tree.

Moving on for another thirty meters or so, we saw a square that was a resting place.

Hand sign orders Dan to scout, and me and Beatrice re-grab the weapon so we can jump right out.

Dan moves on like crawling. He has a regular synthetic bow in his hand, and he looks like a hunter after his prey.

He slowly looked around as he stood his bow. And I've told him in my hand sign that I don't see any enemies.

We'll lower our posture and head to where Dan is, too.

There was just a raid, enough to smell blood and guts in this cold, killing my breath to peek into the square. The sight in my eyes was a mutilated, bloody human and horse corpse.

"Probably because of Snow Ape," Beatrice said.

I didn't answer that question, and I said, "Any enemies around?," he confirms to both of them.

"There's no sign of it," Dan and Beatrice's voice, "I'm the same," returned at the same time.

I myself slowly enter the square after making sure there are no signs.

"See if there are any survivors. I might be able to help."

That's what I call it, but I didn't think there was a survivor in this situation.

I just checked in a minute or two, and I'll give Dan instructions to go report it.

"To Father, the merchants were attacked by SnowApe and wiped out. No survivors. Me and Beatrice explore the perimeter even further. Report this to me."

It was an unbroken sight.

A merchant-style man torn with sharp nails. You twisted your neck at the mercenary's disposal, pointing in the direction of the day after tomorrow. Horses bleeding from their necks, spraying bubbles and dying...... A few horses were still breathing, but they were so scratched that even my healing magic was unlikely to help them, I euthanize them with my sword.

"Snow Ape kills people in the funny half sometimes. Unless, of course, you're hungry. I don't have enough bodies, so I'm guessing he carried them to the rattle."

There was a lot of mouth for Beatrice. I guess she herself is angry at this situation.

Snow Ape is a monkey monster of great magnitude and exceeds two metres in length. Featuring bright white fur and long arms, it is a weapon with strong strength and sharp nails and fangs. It is an unpleasant demon who makes herds with more than a dozen heads and who, if we decide to be stronger than ourselves, will not reach out and thoroughly hoard our weak enemies.

My father arrived with Dan as soon as I waited for my father to arrive on guard around me.

"That's a miserable thing......" he excuses himself for a moment, but he quickly regains his mind and

"Dan continues, keep your perimeter alert. Zach and Beatrice ask to recover the Demonic Crystal Stone and Orb. If you have something to identify you, make sure you have it, too. But leave the body and the carriage alone."

I checked the load of the wagon, but it was barely vandalized with glass products and crafts. For this reason, it is possible to recover it with my storage magic, but I decide that it is too risky to stay in this place where the smell of blood can enter, leaving everything, including the body, unattended. Of course, I collect the gold coins and jewellery I found when I checked my identity.

As soon as my father gave us instructions, he went back. Probably to consult with Viscount Radford.

About enough came the line. The wooden window of the carriage was tightly closed in order not to show it to Luna inside.

The merchants belonged to the merchants of the Empire. Looks like he was going through the Kaum kingdom from his books and headed for the Lax kingdom.

(Maybe he was a merchant who neglected the circumstances around here. I don't know how many people were taken away but the number of escorts is too small......)

My brother Theo, my sister Serra, had a bright blue face on the body of an unbroken body. Still walking in solid footsteps without vomiting.

(It's too exciting for an 11-year-old, but I've just been through a real fight... this is still a light life world...)

I was impressed but felt the lightness of life in this world.

We arrived at the lodge without being attacked by demons. My father reports to the lodging officials that the merchant squad was under attack and hands over the recovered Demonic Crystal Stone and Orb.

The seemingly good officials of those in their late forties are surprised to learn of the famous Lockhart family, but they recall the murdered merchants and darken their expressions.

"You were a young merchant in Imperial Capital. I didn't really hear you were leaving while the other merchants were matching up. So I told him it was dangerous because there were too few escorts, but I told him that security was fine as long as we got out of this neighborhood... Snow Apes don't get their hands on a lot of escorts. I also taught you that..."

Because of the blockade of Aurelia Street, he was a young man who went out to bet only on ambition and unfounded confidence. And you seem to have chipped your own life.

Apparently, the body and luggage will be recovered by the street guard after tomorrow, but he was feeling bad aftertaste like he drank too much bitter booze.
