Chapter 62: THE SIEGE OF IRON AEGIS FORTRESS
The sun sank below the rugged crests of the western mountain range, casting long, blood-red shadows over the towering concrete walls of the Iron Aegis Fortress in Sector 2.
Built into the sheer cliffside of the Mount Blackwood mining ridge, the fortress was a monolithic structure of spell-reinforced tungsten and automated Class-A defense turrets. It served as the central stronghold for Guild Master Carlos—an S-Rank Heavy Destroyer who commanded over eight hundred heavily armed private mercenaries and controlled sixty percent of the region’s unrefined mana-crystal reserves.
Inside the fortress’s subterranean war room, massive steel tables were covered with tactical holoscreens displaying the surrounding provincial highways. Heavy automated defense systems hummed loudly behind reinforced titanium walls, and four hundred mercenary guards clad in adamantite plate armor stood at high alert along the hundred-foot outer parapets.
Guild Master Carlos—a broad-shouldered, muscular man with a scarred face, wearing thick SS-Rank Granite Titan Armor—slammed a heavy steel gauntlet onto the conference table.
"Where are the communication signals from the Capital Sector?!" Carlos barked, his gravelly voice echoing through the reinforced room. "Why has the long-range relay grid been dark for the last four hours?!"
"Guild Master, the high-altitude air corridors over Sector 2 have been completely choked by a localized gale of dark wind!" a nervous tactical officer reported, his fingers flying across his glowing console. "All satellite uplinks, radio frequencies, and mana-comm relays are returning total dead noise! Something is jamming our entire province!"
Standing near the perimeter holoscreen was Vice-Guild Master Derek, an A-Rank High Mage holding a glowing ruby staff. His face was slick with cold sweat as he stared at the mountain border monitors.
"Carlos... the rumors from the refugees at the provincial gate..." Derek stammered, his knuckles white around his staff. "They’re saying the World Federation’s Vanguard Fleet was forced to retreat from the coast. They’re saying the Sovereign extracted the Void-Eater Leviathan and added it to his shadow army!"
"Shut your mouth, Derek!" Carlos roared, his heavy armor flaring with a violent, earth-element mana aura that cracked the concrete floor beneath his boots. "That’s propaganda designed to shatter our morale! A single Hunter cannot conquer an entire country, defeat the World Federation, and control tens of thousands of shadow monsters! It’s impossible!"
Carlos pointed his heavy gauntlet toward the tactical map displaying the fortress’s perimeter.
"Our tungsten walls are three feet thick, reinforced with high-density anti-mana barriers powered directly by the primary mana-crystal refinery in Sector 2!" Carlos bellowed. "We have eight hundred Rank-A mercenaries, forty automated Class-S plasma turrets, and enough mana artillery to level a mountain! If that rogue Sovereign steps into Mount Blackwood, we will bury him under a million tons of crushed granite!"
BZZZZT... KABOOM!
Before Carlos could finish his sentence, the emergency lights inside the war room flickered violently and turned pitch-black. Sparks erupted from the central power consoles as red sirens began to blare in a frantic, terrifying rhythm.
"System alert! Primary power grid severed!" a technician screamed into the darkness as emergency backup generators kicked in with a low, heavy hum. "The central power conduit at the mana-crystal refinery has been cut from the inside!"
"What?!" Carlos gasped, his eyes wide with shock. "The refinery is guarded by two hundred elite mercenaries and three automated barrier layers! How could anyone sever the main conduit?!"
Up on the hundred-foot outer parapets of the fortress, night had fallen completely. The cold mountain gale howled through the tungsten watchtowers, carrying with it a strange, unnatural scent of ozone and sweet, iron-rich blood.
A mercenary guard holding a high-caliber spell-rifle peered out over the dark canyon floor below. "Hey... did you see something move in the shadows near the lower gate?"
"It’s just the wind, idiot," his partner grunted, pulling his heavy tactical coat tighter around his chest. "No one can approach the lower gate without triggering the thermal sensors—"
SWOOSH!
A silent, pitch-black blade materialized out of the guard’s own shadow on the stone parapet. Before the man could utter a single sound, the void-infused dagger sliced cleanly through his throat, severing his vocal cords and mana core instantly.
His partner spun around in shock, drawing his sidearm, but a shadowy hand reached out from the darkness behind him, snapping his neck with a sickening CRACK.
Shadow Commander Sylas emerged from the shadows of the watchtower, his twin void daggers dripping with dark blood. Around him, fifty shadowy figures—Sylas’s elite speedster shadow assassin squad—blistered across the battlements like silent, lethal specters, cutting down fifty outer guards in less than thirty seconds without raising a single alarm.

From the shadow of a high granite peak overlooking the fortress, Renan stood quietly, his long black coat fluttering in the mountain wind. Standing beside him was Shadow Commander Gregory, his massive phantom plate armor radiating a dark, impenetrable aura.
"The grid is dead, My Monarch," Shadow Commander James reported softly, appearing at Renan’s side. "Sylas has secured the main power conduit at the refinery and cleared the upper watchtowers along the western wall."
Renan looked down at the dark, sprawling tungsten fortress nestled inside the mountain canyon. His golden eyes glowed with cold, absolute authority as he raised his right hand toward the starry sky.
"Gregory," Renan commanded smoothly. "Open the front doors."
"By your command, My Monarch!" Shadow Commander Gregory answered, his deep, metallic voice rumbling like grinding stone.
The towering EX-Rank Heavy Tanker stepped off the cliff edge, descending two hundred feet into the canyon below with mountain-shattering momentum.
BOOOOOOOOOOM!
Gregory landed directly in front of the fifty-foot-tall, tungsten-reinforced main gates of the Iron Aegis Fortress. The ground buckled violently under his boots, creating a thirty-foot crater in the solid granite road.
Inside the fortress, alarms shrieked as hundreds of mercenaries rushed to the courtyard walls, pointing their spell-rifles and heavy plasma cannons down at the solitary, dark figure standing in the dust.
"Fire! Fire on the intruder!" a mercenary captain shouted frantically from the inner wall.
A barrage of fifty plasma shells and armor-piercing magic rounds rained down on Gregory. But before the projectiles could touch his phantom armor, Gregory raised his colossal broadsword and slammed its tip into the bedrock, activating his signature ability.
[Skill Activated: ’Fortress Domain’ (Rank-EX)]
Target Area: Iron Aegis Fortress Courtyard
Effect: Deploys 100-Foot Absolute Kinetic Reflection Barrier
BANG-BANG-BANG!
The incoming plasma shells slammed into an invisible, shimmering black wall of kinetic force surrounding Gregory, only to be instantly reflected backward at twice their original velocity! The reflected rounds smashed directly into the courtyard battlements, detonating the ammunition reserves and sending dozens of mercenary guards screaming as they were thrown into the air by their own firepower!
Before the smoke could clear, the dark clouds directly above Mount Blackwood parted.
Down from the sky, landing heavily onto the high mountain ridges surrounding the fortress, came two thousand Abyssal Shadow Beasts and three thousand Shadow Knights. Their golden eyes illuminated the dark canyon like a terrifying forest of burning embers, completely encircling the Iron Aegis Fortress from every direction.
Sitting atop the glowing, spectral head of the colossal Shadow Dragon Leviathan as it descended slowly into the canyon was Renan, looking down at the trapped guild with utter, cold indifference.
