Chapter 66: The Legendary King

I leaned back against the plush leather seat of the vintage sedan, looking out the tinted window as the cityscape blurred past us.

To be honest, I had no clue where Grandfather was taking me, nor did I particularly care. Right now, I was far too entertained by the massive, secret lore dumps he was dropping on me.

Curiosity is a fundamental part of human nature, and I was no exception. Learning about the hidden history of Earth, the true mechanics behind how the supernatural world interacted with the mundane world, was infinitely more fascinating than the luxury car ride itself.

Of course, hearing about a cosmic firewall that protected Earth from foreign pantheons naturally made me wonder who had the sheer authority to pull off something so ridiculous.

At the same time, I wasn’t naive. A barrier meant Earth wasn’t constantly invaded, but it didn’t mean humanity was invincible. The barrier only covered Earth itself, not foreign dimensions or other realms, and I was sure rival factions were always searching for loopholes to exploit it.

I turned back to Alistair, my eyes gleaming with curiosity. "So, Grandfather... who was the King who actually constructed the barrier?"

Alistair rested both hands on the silver head of his cane, a subtle, reverent glint flashing in his dark eyes. "It was the legendary King of Uruk... Gilgamesh."

I blinked, taking a second to process the name. "Gilgamesh... Huh. Honestly, considering how absurdly epic the Epic of Gilgamesh is, that actually makes total sense."

"Indeed," Alistair nodded. "Gilgamesh was one of the

very first humans in recorded history to interact directly with the supernatural world and become one of the earliest Awakened. Throughout his long life, he witnessed the tyranny of ancient pantheons, the chaotic incursions of foreign deities, and the vulnerability of mortal lives. It was those very experiences that drove him to forge the planetary barrier."

Grandfather looked out the window, his voice carrying the weight of history. "He realized humanity needed a sacred sanctuary, not only to protect mankind from the greed of foreign gods, but to protect humanity from destroying itself before its time."

I let out a low whistle, impressed. "Man... Gilgamesh must have been hella powerful to anchor a shield around the entire planet."

Alistair offered a mysterious, unreadable smile, remaining completely silent about the exact extent of Gilgamesh’s power.

Instead, he tapped his cane gently against the floorboard. "Arthur Pendragon, on the other hand, was one of the great rulers who inherited the responsibility of guarding the barrier in later eras. The legendary Knights of the Round Table were originally established not merely for mortal warfare, but as a dedicated order of guardians tasked with maintaining the barrier’s integrity."

Grandfather turned his gaze back toward me with a warm, encouraging smile. "You will learn far more about these ancestral histories once you enter Avalon Academy. After all, Avalon itself was founded by Arthur and the ancient archmages to ensure the progression and survival of humanity."

"Sounds pretty awesome," I said with a grin, thoroughly enjoying the history lesson.

Seeing that Grandfather had fallen silent, signaling he was done spilling high-tier historical secrets for the moment, I tilted my head. "So... if we’re not teleporting, where are we driving to right now?"

Alistair gave a casual shrug, a faint, amused smirk touching his lips. "To a location where teleportation is possible."

I furrowed my brows, confused. "Wait... didn’t you just say the planetary barrier makes long-distance teleportation virtually impossible on Earth?"

Alistair chuckled, his dark eyes twinkling. "The barrier was created by a human king for humanity, boy. It naturally possesses certain privileges and designated transit nodes for those who hold authority. You shall see precisely what I mean once we arrive at our destination."

Deciding to be patient, I sat back and relaxed into the soft leather, turning my head to look out the side window at the passing scenery.

The second my eyes locked onto the trees outside, my vision spun violently. A sudden wave of dizziness hit me, making my head throb as the world turned into a nauseating blur of distorted color.

"Whoa!" I gasped, quickly jerking my head back toward the center of the car and rubbing my temples. "What the hell?"

I looked over at the speedometer on the dashboard, only to freeze. The needle was hovering steadily at a speed that defied all logic.

"Grandfather..." I asked, my throat dry. "How fast are we actually going right now?"

"Around five hundred miles per hour," Alistair replied casually, checking his pocket watch as if we were taking a pleasant Sunday stroll through a park.

I stared at him, my mouth slightly open. I wanted to ask how a vintage luxury sedan was smoothly gliding down a highway at five hundred miles per hour without creating a sonic boom, shattering the windows, or launching us into the stratosphere, but I decided to keep my mouth shut. The supernatural world was proving to be weirder and more absurd by the second.

We continued traveling for nearly two hours.

As time passed, the green countryside gradually gave way to jagged terrain, cold winds, and towering snow-capped peaks rising into the clouds. I recognized the landscape-we had entered the Eston mountain range, the tallest and longest mountain chain in the entire country. The Capital sat relatively close to the base of the range, but we were heading deep into the untamed high-altitude zones.

Surprisingly, as the road ended and pure snow covered the terrain, the heavy luxury sedan didn’t slow down in the slightest. The tires glided over deep snowdrifts and steep rocky inclines as if the laws of friction and gravity were mere polite suggestions.

Finally, the car came to a smooth halt in the middle of a vast, desolate snowy valley surrounded by towering, frozen peaks.

Alistair opened his door and stepped out into the howling wind. I followed suit, pushing my door open and stepping into the knee-deep snow.

The second my feet touched the ground, a brutal, bone-chilling gust of arctic wind slammed into my body.

"Brrr—! HOLY SHIT!" I gasped, my teeth instantly chattering as my entire body shivered. The freezing air felt like thousands of tiny needles pricking straight through my thin shirt and trousers. I definitely hadn’t dressed for a mountain blizzard.
