Chapter 136: The Lowell Family Should Be Grateful for Her Understanding
Jane Lancaster raised a hand to block Clayton Lowell. "Zion is busy right now. I’m afraid you’ll have to leave."
Clayton Lowell looked astonished. "You’re still refusing to let Caleb go?"
"This is absurd!"
A few of the elders couldn’t stand it anymore.
On their way over, they had already heard Clayton Lowell’s complaints and had a poor opinion of Jane Lancaster.
There had been other times when Jane Lancaster had caused a lot of trouble.
The elders launched into a tirade, scolding her mercilessly.
"Your engagement ceremony is tomorrow. We didn’t want to embarrass you, but you’ve gone too far!"
"A man should marry a virtuous wife, not someone who holds him back at every turn and loses her head at critical moments!"
"Is this any time for you to be throwing a tantrum? Don’t you know that with this project’s problems, the Lowell Group stands to lose tens of billions? You couldn’t afford to cover that even if we sold you!"
"Let me be blunt. You haven’t even married into the Lowell family yet. You can be replaced at any time!"
"You’d better think long and hard about what we’ve said today!"
Clayton Lowell sighed. "Jane, it’s not that we don’t want to help you, but the head of Veridian Capital is waiting for Caleb for a meeting. There’s no hiding this. You’ve really caused a huge disaster!"
Though that’s what he said, inwardly he was blooming with delight.
He was eager to see how Jane Lancaster would clean up this massive mess.
After such a verbal assault, a thin-skinned young woman would likely be unable to bear it, bursting into tears of shame and anger on the spot.
But Jane Lancaster’s expression was calm, even a little indifferent.
’I knew this was going to blow up, but I didn’t expect it to happen like this.’
’These elders wouldn’t just storm over here demanding to see Caleb just because they couldn’t reach him.’
’This idiot must have fanned the flames and riled them up. That’s the only reason they’d be worked into a frenzy and come settle scores with me.’
’It’s not the schemes of a villain you have to fear, but the bright ideas of a fool. Well done, truly brilliant!’
Beverly Lynch: "..."
Alright, it was clear that Jane Lancaster was genuinely quite pleased.
She folded her arms and looked at Clayton Lowell. "Excuse me, but have you tried calling Caleb?"
"Of course we did! But Caleb said he had to accompany Jane Lancaster and would be late. But look how late it is now!"
The mere thought of it angered the elders. They were the ones begging for this partnership; what kind of impression did it make to leave the head of Veridian Capital hanging?
"After that, we couldn’t even get through on the phone!" Otherwise, they wouldn’t have had to come here in person to get him.
"What do you have to say for yourself now?"
Jane Lancaster shook her head. "Nothing."
Quentin Woods pushed his way forward. "Where’s Luna? She said she was coming to give you a congratulatory gift, but she never went back, and her phone is unreachable. Did you do something to her again?"
He was frantic. An extremely important ancient painting restoration project had recently been entrusted to him, and he had finally managed to get Luna Morgan to agree to take it on.
In exchange, he had to take Jane Lancaster on as his apprentice.
He had deigned to make this trip to fulfill Luna Morgan’s request, only to find out from the studio that Luna hadn’t even shown up for work!
This was unacceptable! The client was pressing for a quick delivery!
Jane Lancaster: "I’m sorry, but why would you say that?"
Quentin Woods was taken aback for a moment. ’What kind of attitude is that? When your teacher questions you, shouldn’t you be trembling with fear and trepidation?’
"What other reason could there be? Haven’t you targeted and framed her out of jealousy enough times? You’re foolish and ignorant!"
Jane Lancaster: "I didn’t quite understand before why I would be jealous of her, but now I get it."
The elders, growing impatient, had already sent people to search the rooms.
Lana Sterling and a few others returned empty-handed, revealing the truth with schadenfreude. "Don’t waste your energy. You won’t find him!"
"Luna Morgan has apparently been kidnapped, and Caleb went to save her. No one could stop him."
"It’s so touching, really. He doesn’t even care about losing tens of billions."
The atmosphere in the room froze.
"What did you say? Luna was kidnapped? That bastard! Who did it!" That was Quentin Woods.
"Caleb went to save her? Is he a cop? What does it have to do with him? That fool! Why didn’t Assistant Lowe stop him!" This came from a Lowell Group elder who looked like he was about to have a heart attack.
Clayton Lowell was also stunned. What kind of a development was this? Hadn’t Caleb come to back Jane Lancaster up, only to be held here by her?
"Why didn’t you stop him?" Realizing something was wrong, he immediately questioned Jane Lancaster. "What kind of fiancée are you?"
Jane Lancaster was shocked by his self-righteous attitude!
’How is this my fault? Caleb Lowell is a grown man, not a giant baby who needs his mommy to look after him, right?’
Alvin Lancaster had intended to be a peacemaker, but Clayton Lowell’s words were just too harsh.
He thought for a moment and was just about to speak when a clear, resonant voice cut in.
"Since when did President Lowell become a three-year-old child? Does he need his fiancée to decide where he goes?" Jasper Sterling strode over.
Everyone’s gaze instantly shifted towards him.
Standing beside him was a blond, blue-eyed foreigner, watching the scene before him with great interest.
An elder from the Lowell Group frowned, feeling that this foreigner looked somewhat familiar.
But that wasn’t the priority right now. "President Sterling, what brings you here?"
Jasper Sterling smiled humbly. "Please, esteemed elders, just call me Little Sterling."
The elders: "..."
That was just how he was. No matter how viciously they fought in the business world, in private, the man always maintained a humble and polite demeanor.
Years ago, they had naively thought he would be easy to manipulate and paid him no mind, even banding together with several other companies to carve up the Sterling Group’s pie.
Unexpectedly, not only did they fail to get a piece of the pie, but they also suffered heavy losses.
Even though Jasper Sterling was of a younger generation, and even though he was as gentle and polite as ever, who would dare call him "Little Sterling" now?
"I’m here to seek justice for my aunt." Jasper Sterling paused. "But let’s resolve your matter first."
He made a welcoming gesture and stepped aside with a smile, as if he were merely a spectator.
Clayton Lowell spoke first, seizing the initiative. "Even if Caleb insisted on going, couldn’t you have tried to persuade him? With the company in such a huge crisis, you’re here drinking and partying, dead drunk in the middle of the day. What kind of behavior is that!"
Of course, he had to strike first and pin the blame on Jane Lancaster.
After all, the drunkenness was indefensible. Why should a woman be drinking?
Beverly Lynch snorted coldly. "I physically blocked his path, and Caleb still pushed me aside. Do you think she could have stopped him?"
Willow Summers: "Why can’t we drink at a bachelorette party? We were the ones who wanted to open the champagne. Are you blaming us for not stopping her?"
The others, already displeased with Clayton Lowell’s accusation, all began to speak up.
"Young Master Lowell decided that Miss Morgan was in danger based on just a few speculative remarks."
"That’s right, we tried to talk him out of it, but he wouldn’t listen. There was nothing we could do."
"To be blunt, Caleb looked like he was cheating on her. The Lowell family should be thanking Jane for being so understanding and not throwing a fit."
"It’s just baffling. He really came in here throwing his weight around."
Clayton Lowell’s face turned green with anger. Had these people gone mad? How dare they speak up for Jane Lancaster?
He glanced at Lana Sterling, blinking desperately to signal her to say something in his defense.
"Aunt, does your wound still hurt?" Jasper Sterling suddenly asked.
