Chapter 137: This Is What You Call Saving Someone?
"Ouch!" Lana Sterling looked at her nephew’s gentle, concerned gaze and was immediately on the verge of tears.
She had been a drama queen her whole life, but she had never suffered such a serious injury.
Although her nephew usually infuriated her, he truly respected her as his aunt.
Case in point, the moment she called, he immediately brought people to back her up.
Uncle Lynn just watched silently. ’Sigh, I was the one who just cleaned the young lady’s wounds.’
Clayton Lowell held his hands up in surrender. "You’re all drunk. I’m not going to argue with you, alright?"
Beverly Lynch was furious and about to start cursing him out, but Jane Lancaster stopped her.
’Heh, here we go again. When you can’t win the argument, you start labeling people. He’s quite slick with that move.’
Jane Lancaster said calmly, "We may have had some drinks, but our thinking is clear, and we’re sticking to the facts without baseless accusations. Fourth Uncle, if you feel you can’t win the argument, it’s because you’re in the wrong, not because you’ve chosen to stop arguing."
"But then again, Fourth Uncle, you’ve always been like this. When Caleb Lowell didn’t go to the meeting, you blamed me for not letting him leave. When Caleb left to go save someone, you blamed me for not stopping him. Don’t you find that a bit contradictory?"
Clayton Lowell: "You..."
Jane Lancaster didn’t give him a chance to speak. "I’m not surprised, though. When a problem comes up, you never think about solving it, Fourth Uncle. You just find someone to blame. You must have never been weaned, still thinking the whole world is your mommy."
As soon as she said this, several bursts of laughter erupted from the crowd.
"What’s so funny!" Clayton Lowell was livid.
The blond, blue-eyed man immediately apologized. "That was me. I just found that sentence very amusing. My apologies."
Clayton Lowell, furious and embarrassed, snapped, "And who are you? Who let you in?"
Jane Lancaster had noticed this man long ago.
’He came with Jasper Sterling, so who else could he be? Most likely someone from that Veridian company.’
’Perfect. Now it’s not just Caleb Lowell who’s in trouble; The Lowell Group is about to be thoroughly humiliated.’
Jasper Sterling sighed. He knew he couldn’t hide anything from her.
He turned to the man and said, "Osborne, now you see the whole story, don’t you? Mr. Caleb Lowell is so irresponsible, and everyone at The Lowell Group is just shifting blame. With a partner like this, are you confident about entrusting your project to them?"
Clayton Lowell collected himself. ’Trying to scare me?’
"What ’Osborne’? The Lowell Group has no such partner..."
"You bastard, shut up!" Seventh Grand-uncle slapped him hard across the face. "This is President Osborne from Veridian Capital’s overseas headquarters!"
Although he was only a vice president, he was the top decision-maker for investments in Celestria.
The Lowell Group’s partnership had run into such a huge mess, and it was all exposed right under the other party’s nose. It was really over now!
Seventh Grand-uncle was filled with regret. He cursed himself for his failing eyes, for not recognizing him at first glance!
"President Osborne, a misunderstanding! This is all a misunderstanding!" Seventh Grand-uncle shot Clayton Lowell a glare and quickly apologized. "We didn’t know you would come in person..."
The elders of The Lowell Group all rushed to apologize, but Osborne waved his hand dismissively.
"I heard President Lowell was absent from the meeting because he was accompanying his fiancée, to whom he is about to be engaged. Ordinarily, this would be perfectly understandable. That’s why I wanted to come in person to congratulate you both and to apologize to President Lowell’s fiancée, to ask for her understanding given the circumstances."
Osborne’s Chinese was very fluent. He shrugged. "I just didn’t expect this to be the situation."
Clayton Lowell’s face burned with shame, but his heart sank.
Having spent time abroad, he naturally knew that the higher the social status of these foreigners, the more they valued family—or rather, the more they valued publicly demonstrating their commitment to family.
They would believe that a person who doesn’t have a harmonious family life and doesn’t know how to respect his wife is not worth partnering with.
If Caleb Lowell had really been with Jane Lancaster, they would have only praised him for deeply loving his fiancée and wouldn’t have pursued the matter of his being late to the meeting.
But now that Caleb Lowell had ditched his fiancée, the situation was completely different.
"President Osborne, you’ve misunderstood! We Celestrians have a saying: ’A drop of kindness in need should be repaid with a gushing spring.’ The lady in danger once saved Caleb Lowell, which is why he had to go rescue her!"
Osborne hesitated for a moment. "I am familiar with that saying. So, you’re saying President Lowell is a man who takes his responsibilities seriously."
Clayton Lowell was overjoyed. ’Excellent, there’s a chance to salvage this!’
"Yes, he loves his fiancée very much, but he also must repay his benefactor! That lady’s life was in danger; the situation was just too urgent!"
Jane Lancaster: "How come I’ve never heard that Luna saved Zion?"
"There are plenty of things you don’t know," Clayton Lowell said smugly.
Seventh Grand-uncle snapped, "Jane, this is not the time for you to be throwing a tantrum!"
He gave Clayton Lowell an approving look, then turned back to Osborne.
"Please give us a little more time. We will find Caleb Lowell as soon as possible and will certainly present a solution by the end of the day!"
Willow Summers was furious. She admitted she could be petty, but how did Caleb Lowell suddenly become some kind of righteous hero?
Beverly Lynch, however, noticed that Jane Lancaster’s expression was calm, completely unaffected by The Lowell Family.
’Jasper Sterling brought someone here to watch a show, but it definitely wasn’t for *this* show.’
Her gaze paused, and she looked at Quentin Woods. "Call Luna Morgan."
Quentin Woods was already anxious, and upon hearing this, he subconsciously made the call.
Surprisingly, the call connected almost immediately.
"Professor, I’m so sorry, I’m heading to the studio right now!" Luna Morgan’s voice came through clearly.
"Weren’t you kidnapped?" Quentin Woods asked urgently.
Luna Morgan’s voice was filled with surprise. "No, I wasn’t. Professor, who told you that?"
Suddenly, a loud BANG came from the phone, followed by Luna Morgan’s astonished voice. "Mr. Lowell, what are you doing here? What’s going on? Wait, stop!"
The moment Luna started speaking, Jane Lancaster had taken the phone and put it on speaker.
The other end of the line was filled with noise, and then Caleb Lowell’s voice came through. "Thank god, you’re okay."
The joy in his tone was unmistakable.
Jane Lancaster deliberately hung up the phone.
"Looks like it was all a misunderstanding. Second Brother, no need to call the police. You can cancel it," she said softly.
The room was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Clayton Lowell’s mouth hung open, speechless for a long moment.
Osborne’s face darkened. "So, this is what you call a ’rescue’?"
Luna Morgan was able to answer her phone, and her tone showed no sign of distress, which meant she was free.
There were sounds of a struggle in the background of the call, but it seemed to be nothing more than a complete misunderstanding.
And for such a small misunderstanding, that man abandoned his fiancée, abandoned an urgent work meeting and his client?
Osborne was utterly disappointed. "It seems The Lowell Group is not a good partner to work with."
He turned to look at Jane Lancaster. "And President Lowell, it seems, is not a good husband, either. I would advise you, miss, to choose carefully."
Seventh Grand-uncle: "Wait, President Osborne, please let me explain..."
The other elders also anxiously tried to make him stay, but Osborne remained resolute and left.
There was no salvaging the situation. The Lowell Group had first stalled, refusing to give a reason for Caleb Lowell’s tardiness. Then, they shifted the blame. And in the end, they had actually started to deceive him.
"How many true words have any of you actually spoken? I don’t think I understand it, and I don’t want to. Let’s just leave it at that."
After Osborne left, news came from the company: Veridian had officially given verbal notice of contract termination, and the written documents would soon follow.
Because The Lowell Group had acted deceptively, Veridian would be reclaiming their deposit and would also hold The Lowell Group responsible for breach of contract.
