Chapter 532: I will save Aeshma, no one can stop me ! [4]
The thick and acrid dust cloud still swirled in the air that the heat of the explosions had saturated with a smell of calcined stone. This opaque mist considerably reduced visibility, and the silence, as it fell back over the battlefield, seemed all the heavier for it. Little by little, the fine particles settled on the ravaged ground, gradually revealing the extent of the destruction. Two silhouettes then stood out in the midst of this chaos, perfectly motionless. Klein and Aeshma faced each other, on either side of a still smoking crater, whose irregular edges bore the clear mark of their last confrontation. Klein tightened his grip on the hilt of his katana, while a blue glow, steady and deep, ran along the entire length of his blade. He watched his opponent with sustained attention, and his calm, almost disconcerting, contrasted with the violence that had just torn the air.
Yet this fragile balance was broken by a new sound. Heavy and hurried footsteps suddenly echoed on the scattered rock debris, each impact striking the ground in a dull and threatening manner. A man burst from the shadow cast by a heap of collapsed stones, and his massive build caused him to cast an oversized shadow over the cracked earth. Klein, as soon as he recognized this silhouette, felt his breath catch; his eyes widened.
"Kris..." he murmured between his lips, his voice muffled.
Kris Donoghan advanced, his appearance revealing the brutal awakening of his lineage. His hair, once a fiery red, was now an ashen white, like a wild mane. His dragon tattoo, etched on his shoulder and muscular arm, shone with a constant scarlet glow, giving off a heat that made the air ripple around him. He swept the area with a gaze charged with a bestial intensity.
"Well, I don’t know what’s going on... but it looks like today is the day of revelations," he said in a hoarse voice, marked by contained rage.
However, his arrogance evaporated instantly when he laid eyes on an inert form in the center of the rubble. His sister, Isabella, lay on the ground. Her clothes were torn and severe burns marbled her ordinarily so pale skin. Without wasting a fraction of a second, Kris rushed toward her. He knelt roughly, ignoring the debris, and embraced her with a desperate force.
"What’s going on..." he asked as he shook her slightly, hoping for a reaction. "I thought you were dead, why are you still alive... besides, why are you wearing that mask?"
He turned toward Klein, questioning him with his gaze, but no answer came. Klein remained focused on Aeshma, sensing the threat growing with every second. Isabella remained silent, her closed eyes and short breath indicating that she was on the verge of unconsciousness. Kris understood at once, seeing Aeshma’s posture, that the enemy was none other than this woman.
Without wasting another second, Kris gently set his sister down before rising in a fluid, continuous motion. He gripped his spear firmly, its tip instantly igniting under the influence of his art, a menacing orange glow dancing with his breath. As he adjusted his guard, his aura and Klein’s began to resonate with one another. This synergy manifested as a strangely harmonious vibrational frequency that gradually settled between the two combatants, as if their respective energies were finally recognizing common ground. They didn’t need to exchange words, for their intentions were perfectly synchronized.
The fight resumed, its violence amplified tenfold by this unspoken agreement. Klein propelled himself forward, summoning a Repulsive Aura that he channeled beneath his feet. This concentrated burst of energy allowed him to cover the distance between himself and Kris in such a short time that the human eye couldn’t have tracked its trajectory. At the same instant, Kris unleashed his signature art, the Flaming Lion, and projected a massive wave of fire. But this attack, far from being intended to strike his ally, actually provided perfect cover. The flames formed a bright, noisy curtain that obscured Klein’s exact position, and he used this veil to dive into their opponent’s blind spot.
Aeshma tried to parry the assault, but the coordination between the two warriors reached such a degree of precision that no gap remained in their offensive. Klein opened the hostilities by unleashing a Sundering Eclipse: Crescent Moon, a blade of pure white energy that sliced through the air with a whistle. This attack succeeded in breaching the first layers of Aeshma’s defense, forcing the entity to concentrate all its attention on its left. In that interval, Kris exploited this breach with a Movement: Flaming Lance. The incandescent tip of his weapon found its path through the weakened guard and pierced Aeshma’s shoulder at the exact moment when the latter was struggling to deflect Klein’s blade.
A jet of black blood escaped from the wound and stained the dusty ground, but Aeshma showed no sign of retreat. The entity tried to counter with a circular attack intended to encompass them both, but Klein immediately triggered his Attraction Aura technique to deflect the trajectory of the opposing arm. This strategic movement had the effect of unbalancing Aeshma and creating a gaping opening in its posture. Kris did not let this opportunity pass and drove a devastating knee strike full into his enemy’s chest, amplifying the impact with a concentrated discharge of wind mana. The violence of the shock was so intense that Aeshma’s ribcage emitted a sinister crack whose echo resonated across the battlefield.
The two allies of circumstance now moved like the two inseparable faces of the same coin. Klein systematically struck in the lower zones, making his katana whistle to sever Aeshma’s tendons and supports, while Kris targeted the upper parts in order to force the entity to constantly raise its guard. This perfect synchronicity produced a troubling effect, for the opponent had the impression of fighting a single monster endowed with four arms, whose attacks complemented one another without ever overlapping. The dust raised by the fury of the impacts settled intermittently, but each new volley of blows made it swirl again, reducing the visibility around them.
Klein and Kris did not intend to slow their pace until Aeshma’s body was entirely consumed by their attacks. This unfailing determination marked a decisive turning point in Klein’s mind, for his initial thoughts inclined rather toward a less radical resolution. The dynamics of the combat and the necessity of definitively eliminating this threat had however compelled him to revise his objectives.
