Former General Is Undead Knight

Episode XVI: The Alchemist of Malicious Cities

Tethomburg, a small city, exists adjacent to the mine on Viscount Lagard territory.

Its secluded presence in the mountains has only forced about eight hundred people to pack into narrow buildings at best, and it is still closer to describing it as a somewhat larger, well-equipped village than technically a city.

Originally, the land was made by Viscount Lagar to confine the poor inhabitants and only complete their lives as pitchers, a city where underground facilities were the main ones so as not to be too obsessed with the human eye, and neither existed on the map of the kingdom.

That's why "The Whistling Devil" can also be said to have caught his eye.

The main facilities in Tethomburg are underground, so the ground is simply lined with simple, low-lying buildings.

We couldn't have built tall buildings out of sight.

There stands one simplified build-up to keep an eye on the distance, but it dares to leave its aging appearance intact, which no one paid particular attention to, even if those who do not know Tethomburg may find it from a distance.

One red-haired young man walks through the simple streets of Tethomburg.

He wraps a thin robe and has a pocket watch around his neck.

He was pushing a wheelchair in his hand, and there sat a girl with a face who seemed to be resourceful.

A girl laughs at him like she cares for a young man with a gloomy expression in silence.

"Brother, the landscape here is a little boring, but it's much better than underground. There's something disgusting in so many ways."

"Right. Elise."

A young man squeaks in a tired voice.

Elise was the girl's name.

Luluk was only the bridge between the 'whistling demon' and Viscount Lagar, and it was one of the eight wise men of the 'whistling demon', the unidentified alchemist 'Spinner of Truth', who dominated this Tethomburg.

It was dominated by the Alchemy Division, Angel of Death, an organization headed by him, who used children gathered from all over Viscount Lagard to carry out studies of witchcraft.

The name of the red-haired young man is called Alante, he was originally just an alchemist, but because he was too young to excel as a mage, he was eyed by the 'whistling demon'.

Even within his relatives, his uncle, who was rumored to be creepy and have no idea what he was thinking, forcibly brought him to say, 'You have been chosen by God,' and when he realized that he had arrived first was a 'whistling demon' entangled organization that did not leave the rumours range at the time, he was in a situation where he could not escape.

Because we could not afford to conduct direct human experiments, they are reserved only for building magic formations, supporting hypotheses, and biological experiments using Frogga, a small warcraft.

I never even had a decent trip to the human laboratory.

I just understood that Al Ante himself could be thrown down drugs without explanation on a regular basis or engraved with mysterious magic formations, and he was just one of the experimental subjects of The Angel of Death himself.

And the treatment was by no means unusual for the junior members of The Angel of Death.

I was hated by the members of the "Angel of Death" because all values didn't fit in, but was oddly liked by Deputy Commander Tony Rail for what he was expecting.

Tony Rail has also tragically murdered other members who once laid hands on Al Ante.

It's just that they were both objects of disgust if you try from Alante.

The "Spinner of Truth" was essentially Tony Rail's chief officer in this regiment, as it seemed like a monster only to have a robe on something gothic from a distance and not where the conversation was taking place.

"The Spinner of Truth" has the ability to paint and fully remember all sorts of magic formations in his brain, so he doesn't need to move his hands.

He's also terribly nervous, and he never does human experiments in public, Tony Rail says.

In other words, no one can know if the Spinner of Truth is really doing something.

I don't share my accomplishments with other people.

He also leaves it to Tony Rail to prepare and process after the experiment, and where it gets clogged, only he and Tony Rail can know if the 'Spinner of Truth' really has the ability to think or take meaningful action.

For that reason, Arante wondered if that gothic thing was just a guiding device and that Tony Rail was the Eight Sages' Spinner of Truth, but he never bothered to say it.

For Al Ante, the 'Angels of Death' alchemists, without exception, were the object of disgust, including themselves, who were honestly following and surviving, but being liked by Tony Rail was never a bad thing.

He would be killed by an immediate chase if he got out of Tethomburg, but he had the authority from him to take the child thus made into an experimental subject out of his own control, on the ground, and to walk freely.

The kids rejoiced and admired him for this time when he might be self-satisfied, which means nothing, but the only time he could walk outside.

Al Ante himself thought this walk was the only healing in a creepy human experimental city and would have been insane without it.

"Brother, when am I going to die? I thought you knew.

Elise calls out to Alante.

He gets stuck in a response.

Biological experiments in Tetomburg, in large part, lead to immediate death and to observe the process before finally dismantling it alive.

Elise was the latter, and because of strange sorcery and the administration of drugs, her legs were immobilized.

"... I think I got you in trouble"

"It's okay. Well... you won't let me kill you..."

Alante is powerless.

It wasn't even possible. It was a promise.

There is no way Tony Rail would compromise the research.

Now he is reluctantly fond of Al Ante, but it was visible that he would be killed soon if he thought it would get in the way of his research.

It is decided that Elise will be captured before she leaves the neighborhood of this city, even if she is prepared to die.

To Elise, I knew that.

Even if my own legs are safe, in case the escape can't be successful.

"If it kills you anyway, it's good for your brother"

After Elise had spoken, she saw the look on Alante's face and made a grin to delude her.

"I'm sorry, forget it, brother"

…………

After a bit of heavy silence, Elise looked at Al Ante's face and enlarged her pupils a little.

"Brother, face, cheeks"

Elise pokes herself on the cheek as she looks back at him.

Al Ante strokes his own cheek, but he doesn't feel anything on his hands.

After Elise shook her head, she had become completely uncommon these days, not a making laugh, a childish pure grin.

"I'll take it for you. Here."

From Elise's sitting position, she stretches out her arms full.

As Alante put her face closer to her as she questioned her, Elise stretched her neck and gently put her lips on his cheek.

"Elise......?

"... Remember, though I may be, that I was here, brother"

Alante couldn't laugh back at the girl's diligent, full grin.
