Chapter 985 - 453: [Kirov]_2
But...
If the enemy were mutants with no anti-air capabilities, this contraption might not be a joke anymore.
"Wait, we could actually drop a few hundred pounds of explosives first!"
Ford • Bombdrill suddenly slapped his palm, realizing and said to Rivet Wheel in front of him, "You’re right!"
"Nonsense! When did I ever say that?!"
Rivet Wheel first rebutted subconsciously, then paused suddenly, "Wait? You said I was right?"
Ford laughed heartily and nodded, "Yes, you’re absolutely right. Hey, someone turn us toward the five o’clock position, full speed ahead!"
He shouted loudly at the distant helmsman, his whole body trembling with excitement.
Rivet Wheel widened his eyes and waved his hand, "Wait, didn’t the Black Vatican Priest order us to wait for Her Highness the Saintess and then..."
"Wasting is shameful, you fool."
Ford excitedly shivered his large ears, letting out a piercing laugh, "Haha, since the load is insufficient, we can totally let Her Highness the Saintess wait a bit longer, give those monsters a little surprise, and then circle back to pick up the passengers."
Rivet Wheel thought for a moment and began to laugh along, "That’s a good idea, I think Her Highness the Saintess won’t mind a slight delay in our flight."
Just like that, the two rare came to an agreement.
Ten seconds later, [Kilov], hovering mid-air, turned in place, leisurely flying in the direction of its five o’clock, towards the twin bridges of Twin Cities.
Then came the long five minutes...
For [Kilov], the process of flying... or rather drifting, from its previous location to the destination was indeed lengthy.
For Paula Osan, who was defending Ebby City’s Long Bridge in place of Xia Lian, and her warriors, battling countless monsters to the death also felt exceptionally long, especially after the riverboats ran out of ammunition and could no longer provide fire support.
Unlike [Kilov], whether it was Paula’s flagship [Shock Number] or the other three [Sea Beast] class warships, they were real ships. The ammunition reserves for those engineering firearms and the Magic Power storage of the magic cannons were not excessive, at least not so much that it would affect normal navigation and mission execution. For a real warship, the possibility of bombing continuously for more than ten minutes without either destroying the enemy or getting destroyed was almost nil. So, after plowing through endlessly resilient mutants for twenty minutes, although unharmed, the gunners simply ran out of ammunition to continue the firing.
The stress naturally increased for those engaged in melee combats with the mutants on the Long Bridge.
[Her Highness Xia Lian stood her ground here for more than ten hours...]
Paula placed her firearm against a mutant’s face and pulled the trigger, directly blasting the latter’s head into thirty pieces. The other hand holding a sapphire-encrusted splendid curved sword swept through the air, releasing a stream-like substantial light trace that bisected several mutants before her, murmuring softly, "And that, despite not being in good physical condition, my God, it’s hard to imagine..."
"Captain! We have started to have casualties!"
The burly orc first officer, swinging an anchor like reaping wheat, knocked down a patch of mutants to the ground, returned gasping for breath beside Paula, and said, "We can hold on for at most another twenty minutes, these monsters are too ferocious. If we continue to fight, the warriors might have the strength, but they are likely to collapse!"
Paula glared at him and angrily said, "Collapse my ass! The joint forces had barely over two thousand people, mostly low-rank professionals, and included several hundred common militiamen, and they managed to hold on for two months, gradually taking down the north and the middle. Are we, the regular army, going to falter after less than an hour? Is the Duke spending money to embarrass the duchy?!"
"No, Captain!"
"Tell everyone, if anyone dares to flinch in battle, before they die from being scared by these monsters, I’ll shoot them out of the cannon myself! Did you hear that!"
"Yes, Captain!"
"Move the severely injured to the back where there’s less pressure and let them rest, no one at the front is allowed to retreat! That’s an order!"
"Yes, Captain!"
The first mate nodded vigorously, carrying his immense anchor as he charged back into the fray, continuously shouting, "Listen up everyone, the Captain said, whoever chickens out will get a cannon stuffed up their ass! Did everyone get that!"
The response was a terrified, "Understood!"
Paula’s temples throbbed as she silently resolved to stuff that first mate, who always managed to crudely twist her orders, into the cannon’s muzzle.
Just then, she suddenly saw a shadow in the gloomy night sky, a slow-moving, gigantic, strangely shaped shadow!
"What the heck is that?!"
Paula was shocked and took out a monocular enhanced with the Eagle Eye Technique, staring dumbfounded at the shadow which hovered leisurely over where the mutants were most densely packed. Suddenly, a section of the undercarriage turned into an active hatch that clacked open, and then...
A row of wooden crates painted with cartoon skeleton heads dropped down like dumplings.
Half a second later, Paula first squatted down covering her eyes, and then was knocked back by a series of explosions.
These were a series of explosions completely different from those of the engineering cannons and magic cannons. The terrifying containers exploded the moment they hit the ground, first blowing up their casings, then turning into a bright fireball, and in the next second, ejecting a huge mess of God-knows-what, which either flew a short distance in the air or exploded right there, turning into more or larger bursts of fire accompanied by more muffled and sharp explosion sounds, blowing the surrounding monsters from one centimeter to ten meters away. Meanwhile, a large number of items like screws and gears also scattered, causing secondary lethality, and some particularly independent screws even exploded!
Paula, a veteran in dealing with cannons, could swear she had never seen such bizarre bombings in her life. They might not have been very lethal at the moment of impact, but their terrifying sustainability was unmatched. Those mutants that survived the first blast undamaged were either engulfed by a torrent of subsequent fires in the next second or were sliced by the spreading shrapnel, while those lucky enough to not be dismembered were struck a third time by various tiny objects scattered around or embedded in their bodies.
The most bizarre was a mutant that had endured three rounds of lethality; the wooden crate in front of it had very low explosive power, merely causing it to stagger, and none of the shrapnel from the follow-ups hit it. However, driven by instinct, when it tried to resume its charge at Paula and her group, it accidentally stepped on a small rooster.
Yes, a cute, metal rooster, which because it was missing half a claw, could only constantly flop about on the ground, all the while making a ’cluck cluck cluck’ sound, looking quite humorous.
Yet, it was precisely this creature that turned into a three-meter-wide fireball the moment that mutant stepped on it, blasting it a dozen meters away, and breaking into three separate groups as it landed.
About a dozen huge crates smashed down simultaneously, the process taking no more than five seconds, yet the unending explosion sounds lasted almost a minute before they finally quieted down.
With just a quick glance as she jumped up, Paula could conservatively estimate that at least three hundred mutants met their untimely demise.
This result left her and her buddies stunned at the time.
Then they heard a sharp ’We’ll be back soon’ rise in the air, as that weirdly shaped airship turned around clumsily and drifted back in the direction it came from.
It did not take a single cloud with it.
