Chapter 984 - 453: [Kirov]
This behemoth of an airship, cumbersome and slow, was named the "Kirov." Its prototype was a Bao Gang Aviation goblin airship that crashed southeast of Disk Tree City just two hours after departing from the airship tower. Although its captain, Ford • Bombdrill, and the crew survived the crash with remarkable skill and returned to Disk Tree City promptly, due to a plague that broke out a few days later, the wreckage of the "Lucky" wasn’t immediately retrieved. It wasn’t until Motan sent a team to fight their way to the crash site and established a temporary transportation route that all the recoverable debris was finally brought back.
Of course, Motan, having spent a considerable amount of manpower and resources on this, naturally had motives beyond merely contributing to waste sorting. In fact, after collecting all the ship’s remains, he immediately summoned all the staff from the airship tower in Disk Tree City, not leaving out a single employee from either Bao Gang Aviation or the Pan-Dwarf Business Circle, and held a brief meeting that was righteous and passionately charged.
And then... followed it up with a long-winded meeting, appealing to logic and stirring emotions.
It has to be said that getting two groups with completely opposing ideologies to collaborate sincerely was more exhausting than engaging in a small-scale skirmish. Despite giving him, their commander, considerable respect, their "as restrained as possible friendly discussions" inevitably turned into a melee after just thirteen and a half seconds over, of all things, the placement of a damned rivet...
In summary, after several guards finally managed to suppress these hot-headed individuals, Motan earnestly persuaded them for three long hours. During this process, he was unintentionally wounded eleven times by small-scale explosives tossed by both sides, was force-fed three pots of hot tea by Yu Chen, who was worried about him getting dehydrated, and was hit several times by wrenches flying through the air. Staggering out with his Health Points having dropped by a staggering thirty-two percent.
But after all, he succeeded in implementing his own ideas, barely getting the designers, led by goblins and dwarves respectively, to agree to a cooperative effort, promising to build a new ship out of that pile of wreckage as quickly as possible...
That was the ship named "Kirov," this aberrant airship.
Its prototype was a standard airship from Bao Gang Aviation, which despite crashing eight times already, was still considered ninety percent new quality goods. With the help of many civilian engineers, both groups completed the fundamental structural repairs in barely under two days, and then began to undertake the monstrous large-scale modifications as per Motan’s requests.
To minimize the chance of another disaster, the tearful Bao Gang Aviation employees had to remove everything from the airship that posed an explosive threat, turning it back into essentially a shell. Then, on that basis, together with the Pan-Dwarf Business Circle’s employees, they expanded the airship’s structure threefold, transforming it from an odd shuttle shape to an exotic oval shape, thus making the effective area of the airship ridiculously large. Next, they pulled out every spare engine from the warehouse and the Bao Gang Aviation engineers endowed them with an explosive overloaded function to compress their lifespan, while the business circle’s engineers modified the safety devices, adding at least three kinds of security measures, and then mounted these temporary engines, with an average lifespan of less than a month, all over the ship.
They repeatedly cycled through increasing the hull’s size and repairing or creating additional engines to be attached. After about three or four rounds of this, this strangely shaped good ship came into being.
It had an area, an output, a carrying capacity, all of which were so huge they were freakishly out of proportion for an airship, as well as a moving speed so slow it was freakish. Just like Captain Ford • Bombdrill said before, this thing couldn’t even outrun a horse at full speed – all of its tremendous output was used just to keep itself from falling.
Because it was just too heavy...
Under the condition of leaving only the minimum necessary crew, Motan insanely converted all the vacant spaces of the ship into storage, and then filled them with explosives collected from all over Misha County. These ranged from goblin-made "Babe’s Treasure" toothbrushes and dwarf-made "Lovely Flying Monkey" mechanical pets to various detonators and explosives. Anything that couldn’t be used as land mines on the Hodir Mountain Path was crammed in by Motan.
In the end, he forcibly filled the airship to the brim.
Of course, despite storing explosives equivalent to over a dozen warehouses, the theoretical combat value of the "Kirov" airship was still zero, undoubtedly zero.
In any conventional war... or even combat, a vehicular behemoth with a maddeningly slow speed and practically nonexistent maneuverability is of no value. Moreover, it lacked basic armor, and just a Fire Blast Technique that a Primary Stage Mage could conjure up could directly take out its exposed engines and cause this slow and defenseless airship to crash.
Of course, since it was loaded with explosives, the "Kirov" might not even have the chance to crash; it was more likely to just explode in mid-air like a bunch of fireworks.
An airship that any random archer or Magician could shoot down as easily as targeting a bird has about as much value in war as a joke.
