Chapter 1156 - 533: Throat Cut_2
The next second, this mob howled and charged at the Lord’s Allied Forces. Among them, many mages recklessly hurled large-scale lethal spells, caring little about friendly fire.
Then, the tense strings of the warriors snapped...
One must remember that it was already night, and although there was moonlight and the Illumination Technique, visibility was far from high. Even though most could see the collapsed city gate, few could distinguish the rabble from the Knights and Mages of the Marshall Family under these circumstances. When they came under attack, despite those with great strength or enhanced vision through spells refraining from acting rashly, many chose to retaliate immediately!
After all, the order they had received was clear—show no mercy to the resistors.
Thus, the moment they were assaulted by magic and cold arrows, the ranged professionals from Duntis and the Hussein Family armies at the front retaliated fiercely. Their attacks covered the entire city wall, indiscriminately hitting the mob and both the Bafei Sword Knight Order and the Bingmu Mage Group.
Ranger arrows and powerful crossbow bolts rained down, Spellcasters summoned flames and thunder that crashed down, instantly ’plowing’ through hundreds of people. Many mages and knights of the Marshall Family were blasted away before they could react, and the disorganized ranks of the rabble collapsed in droves.
And then the situation spiraled out of control...
Trained and disciplined, the Bafei Sword Knight Order immediately regrouped after the first wave of attacks, spurred their horses into action, drew their weapons, and began to charge with steps as rhythmic as drumbeats; the Bingmu Mage Group also quickly cast seven or eight defensive Spells and, after a brief period of chaos, uniformly buffed themselves with numerous supportive and amplifying spells. They then orderly chanted joint spells, constructing a series of continuous ice walls in front of them to fend off the imminent knight charge.
As the main corps of the Marshall Family, they were well aware of the Lord’s Allied Forces’ ’Violet Falcon Array’ assault tactics. Even theoretically not being in the eagle shoulder position wouldn’t make the first few waves of assaults any less destructive.
Indeed, Motan had guessed wrong earlier. While he and Double Leaf, deemed ’non-combatants,’ were arranged in the central area, the corps originally supposed to be there were not Marshal but Fernan; however, to maintain the integrity of the offensive, the Fernan Family’s warriors were shifted to the left shoulder of the ’Violet Falcon Array,’ replacing the Marshall Family and forming a pincer with Fire Claw. That’s why the central area had been vacated.
In a nutshell, the two sides went to war under these circumstances where neither side had the time to react!
As the wings, the Simon Family Night Watchers and the Baroka Family Pan Mountain Heavy Cavaliers launched their offenses first. In an instant, they both maximized their speed, slashing up from both sides like two scythes. In terms of sheer force, the Baroka Family’s Heavy Cavaliers were the fiercest of the Violet Falcons, far surpassing even the Wolf Cavalry of Fire Claw; despite being slower and less enduring, as the eagle’s wings, they always caused the most destruction at the start, no matter the opponent.
Regarding the Simon Family’s Night Watchers, although they too were the eagle’s wings, they were the polar opposite of the Baroka Heavy Cavaliers. This mixed corps, formed from Martial Monks, Thieves, and Rangers, lacked overwhelming impact force but had great mobility and versatility. Whether in close quarters or at long range, they could adapt with ease. They might not be able to break through enemy formations, yet in terms of containment and entanglement, their quiet Dark Elf warriors were undeniably powerful, confident they could suppress even the renowned Bafei Sword Knights.
For they were not fighting alone—following close behind the Night Watchers, the [Violet Right Shoulder Eagles]—the Fire Claw Territory Wolf Cavaliers were like hungry wolves circling their prey, always ready to tear into the foe tangled by the Night Watchers.
However, the Iron Gate Guards of the Fernan Family, sharing the mantle of the eagle’s shoulder, were somewhat less suited for the task. Known for their defensive capabilities, they struggled with this mission, falling further behind due to their slower movements and finding it hard to provide instant support to the Pan Mountain Cavalry.
But this was of little consequence. At that very moment, the latter had already barbarically shattered more than a dozen ice barriers and, like tigers bursting through open gates, pounced upon the Bingmu Mage Group, fortified within dozens of spells and barriers.
Elsewhere, the Sword Knight Order of Bath had just begun their charge, still far from reaching their peak velocity, when they collided fiercely with the Night Watcher Legion. The vanguard of almost a hundred Martial Monks was instantly impaled, while the Dark Elf Rangers lurking in the midst of their ranks leaped forth as the knights’ speed slackened, raining down a hail of arrows that slaughtered dozens of knights.
Next, nearly a hundred traps that had been laid just before the battle were sprung, and several dozen knights stumbled off their mounts in disarray, unable to rise before cold, sharp daggers severed their throats.
Not far off, a sudden rise in the howling of wolves signaled the detachment of the Wolf Cavalry from the Fire Claw Territory, brandishing gleaming scimitars as they charged with a roar.
The Sword Knight Order of Bath quickly found themselves in dire straits.
Meanwhile, the rest of the Lord’s Allied Forces, still maintaining a regular pace, pressed forward, and because both the Ice Mage Group and the Sword Knight Order of Bath were completely tied down, and the Mercury Guard upon the city walls still showed no sign of action, the only obstacle between them and the city of Mercury now appeared to be a disorderly, ragtag militia.
And, indeed, these were not merely feigned appearances but a real rabble.
The Duntis Golden Crow Guard, as sharp as an eagle’s beak, needed only a few minutes to obliterate half of their opponents. The Swordsmen and Spellcasters, formidable in breaching fortifications, could hardly believe that their enemies were so easily defeated.
Clearly, even if the ragtag militia possessed average mid-rank strength, they were outclassed in terms of coordination, equipment, and combat discipline, resulting in a near-instant collapse.
At least, that’s how it seemed on the surface...
Half a minute later, as the Mages of the Duntis Golden Crow Guard prepared to end this mockery with a small-scale Joint Spellcasting, nearly a hundred shadows, moving at incomprehensible speeds, burst forth from the remaining rabble and infiltrated the ’Beak of Duntis’ formation, then disappeared without a trace!
Another half minute passed, and the multitude of Mages, who were calmly Joint Spellcasting from the rear, were cut down like wheat, their Magic Power output abruptly halted. This chain reaction of interrupted spells backfired on the four hundred-plus Mages, while the many close-combat Professionals left at the rear failed even to locate the enemy.
The Hussein Balance Guard that followed was also attacked. This legion, with its strong overall capability and acting as the ’Neck of the Falcon’, managed to keep track of the enemy, but were penetrated through and through by an ’elite’ force that had somehow closed in on them undetected. Despite being numerous and fiercely resisting, people kept falling in droves, not just due to the enemy’s superior strength—the many seemed also to succumb to some sort of mental Spell, collapsing in a sudden heap.
Furthermore, the Hussein Balance Guard had always maintained a hemispheric formation to protect the Violet Royal Family within, which made their own defense lines thin. Thus, the fewer than a thousand soldiers at the center lasted less than five minutes before being brutally breached.
And the attackers sliced into the smallest and final segment—the Violet Falcon Array—with under a tenth of their number lost and in a manner that could only be described as ferocious.
Emperor Clive Bresin of the Empire, personally leading his troops, was right there!
