Chapter 1008 - 463: The Final Fierce Battle_2
The Holy Knights on both flanks, their eyes red with fervor, pushed forward. They had been commanded before the battle to wait until the death squad had absorbed the first wave of impact before they could take action. They had already made several charges in the previous combat and their remaining physical strength was insufficient to break through the defensive line while keeping casualties under control. To use the words of one death squad member, "Your lives are more valuable than ours, so you have to make a brilliant entrance after we’ve made our sacrifice."
"Damn it!"
Kay, the low-rank Holy Knight who had once confronted Gerbin on the A1 slope, cursed wildly as he brandished his lance and desperately charged toward the increasingly thin ranks of the death squad, roaring, "You bastards, get the hell to the back once you’ve completed your mission!"
The pointed-eared Elf warrior, Grape, glared at him from afar. She swung her massive battle-axe and sent the head of a mutant flying, crisply spitting out, "Spit!"
Not far away, the Dwarf Priest Stone Music casually tossed two blessings of courage onto his childhood friend Tirio Wind Rage, who pounced on a mutant that tried to overpower him and, while praising the name of the God of Justice, smashed the creature’s pelvis with one hammer blow.
"Lead the charge, you big silly uncle!"
Robin Weld, dressed in a deep green cloak, leaped high and drew her short crossbow from her thigh. She shot an arrow into the brow of the mutant pinned to the ground, then nimbly landed on the shoulder of another mutant; she pulled out a short dagger from her waist and plunged it into the latter’s skull.
"Watch out, my love!"
Tirio Wind Rage, his magic points all spent, in his urgency used a bear hug he had learned from television to thrust one mutant aside, saving Grape who was in a perilous situation.
Not a single player retreated; they were clearly fighting with utter abandon.
After all, the big shot Hei Fan had already given up on commanding, so how to fight was left to their own judgment.
The NPCs in the rear also swarmed forward; the three combat sequences nearly disbanded during the charge. The fast-running Thieves and Rangers took the lead, following the death squad into the enemy lines, while the Spellcasters left behind frantically hurled various instant-cast magic spells, aiming wherever there were more monsters, certain they would hit something.
Elf Thief Elsa, originally positioned in the reserve sequence, had somehow already made her way to the front. The somewhat timid girl moved agilely amidst the players of the death squad, rushing wherever mutants were numerous, desperately protecting those Spellcasters and Clergy who were approached by monsters, like dancing on the edge of a knife.
A heavy crossbow pinned half a mutant crawling behind Elsa to the ground, ensuring a monster with only its upper body left could no longer reach the clumsy girl just inches away.
"Mr. Lorum!"
Elsa turned around, stunned, and exclaimed to a staggering figure standing out from the crowd, "But you were already..."
"Haha, didn’t sleep too soundly," Lorum said with a laugh, shaking the heavy crossbow in his hands, "Now I’m settled, but seems I can’t sleep anymore."
The tall young man behind him winked at Elsa, "Old Lorum asked me for a lift, you ran too fast."
"Thanks, Raymond," Elsa said.
Lorum hopped on one leg, punched Raymond in the chest, and grinned, "But next time no princess carry, I’d rather be slung over your shoulder."
"Sure thing, see you around," Raymond laughed heartily, lifted the longsword inherited from his father, leaped towards the front lines, and charged at the mutants. His hand holding the sword was still shaking, but it didn’t matter because he now understood what his old man meant by the irreplaceable thing he held dear.
It feels pretty good!
"Mr. Lorum, I..."
Elsa only then came to her senses, looking expectantly and stuttering at the Gnome Ranger, not far away, who was of the same height as countless others. Her face flushed red as she hung her head low.
"Focus! Now’s not the time to get hung up on that!"
Lorum, however, was intently covering his comrades in the distance who were engaged in close combat with the mutants, not even turning his head as he said, "After this battle’s over, I’ll confess to you."
The little Thief was stunned for a moment, then she smiled sweetly and nodded vigorously, "Mhm!"
After all, a chaotic battle had thus messily begun.
The fight to the death between the living and the dead, without any place for mercy, erupted in the nearly completely burned-down city of Savar.
Centered around the square in front of the Holy Church Union chapel, combat was happening in every corner: Mages lobbing huge Fireballs from rubble; Magicians stealthily climbing towers to guide demon portals; Shaman Priests, out of Magic Power, using Totem Poles to hit people; Warriors, baring their chests to block several monsters in a ruined house, unleashing Heavy Storm; Rangers hopping on various heads all over the place shooting arrows; Hunters carrying their injured beast partners on their backs, charging into the enemy ranks to bite together; Thieves sneaking into clusters of Mutants, unexpectedly striking with Death Dust; Alchemists driving Alchemy Workshops like chariots, crushing their way through; the Scarlan navy, grouped in threes and fives as if they were a band of believers from the Justice Sect; Druids, planting corpse flowers on-site with the Fertility Priests; Holy Knights charging forward by the half-meter ...
The scene was sheer chaos!
Motan was also desperately fighting in the crowd, fulfilling the duties of a common Priest as much as possible. He indeed had no command since the remaining members of the joint troops were all in various states, differing in Physical Ability, Magic Power, and mental strain. In such a state, it was difficult to execute orders precisely, and forceful strategic deployments would only cause confusion. Hence, in this battle, the best command was no command, letting everyone unleash their own Strength was enough.
Of course, Motan was not completely hands-off; he used the same method as in the previous battle at Doe Hill: while observing the situation, he would occasionally randomly pull together a few people to form a temporary team with himself at the core. After completing various objectives like assaults, flanking, interception, emergency support, the team would disband on the spot, then another one would be formed, and the cycle continued.
Keeping track of casualties had become meaningless; every minute and second saw warriors falling. The dire physical and mental states, combined with double the enemies’ numbers, were certain to make this battle extremely difficult. For every meter the joint troops pushed forward, a heavy price was paid; in less than ten minutes, the more than two hundred daredevil players were nearly wiped out. They fought the fiercest and faced the largest enemy front, with soldiers dying in droves.
But the number of Mutants was also sharply decreasing. During this process, Motan, Luna, Paula, Cordova, and Guxiaole all played pivotal roles.
Luna stood on the second-floor balcony of the Alchemy Workshop, mixing various large-scale damaging tools effective only against Mutants on-site and throwing them down. A few unlucky helpers sent to assist her were helping transport materials and push carts, occasionally even serving as test subjects, like with the explosive crystal that only needed half a second to detonate but had a kill radius of three meters, disrupting the Mutants on the west side of the square.
Paula wielded her water-based auxiliary Magic with at least Middle-Rank Mage capabilities and her engineering hand cannon to move around, saving the dying and aiding the wounded while pouring out firepower. She frequented the densest areas of Mutants.
As for Cordova, he had plunged into the Mutant swarm alone and started mowing them down from the moment the battle began. Relying on his terrifying Attack Power and durability, he carved a gap in the horde of monsters and even caused some chaos with crates of revitalizing powder, not only achieving an objective slaughter rate but also indirectly easing the pressure on the main forces.
Guxiaole, who declared earlier that he had held something back, grabbed a Longsword with only the handle remaining. After standing dumbfounded for two minutes, he charged into the east side of the square and unbelievably pierced through the high-density Mutants!
