Chapter 347: It’s Her
The name, the motive, even the details of the crime—it all matched up.
But Su Li knew the moment she saw him that he wasn’t Yang Jiu.
He was just a scapegoat.
Su Li knew it, Mr. Zhang knew it, everyone knew it. But the scapegoat had turned himself in, and all the details matched.
If even the group of homeless men testified that this Yang Jiu was *the* Yang Jiu, the whole situation would be truly laughable.
After seeing ’Yang Jiu,’ Su Li spoke with Mr. Zhang for another half hour.
When they were done, Mr. Zhang handed ’Yang Jiu’ over to a colleague and went off to handle something, though Su Li didn’t know what.
When Su Li came out, she was surprised to see Wa Wa Lian.
"Sister-in-law." Wa Wa Lian broke into a smile the moment he saw Su Li.
Su Li took a deep breath, but ultimately accepted the title. "How is Wu Sheng? Is he okay?"
Wa Wa Lian grinned. "The boss is doing great. You don’t need to worry, Sister-in-law."
"That’s good. If you see Wu Sheng, please tell him I’m doing fine as well," Su Li said.
Wa Wa Lian chuckled. "Of course, Sister-in-law. I actually came today to let you know that this whole thing will be over soon."
Su Li paused, stunned. "Over soon?"
"Mhm. As for the specifics, you’ll find out very soon, Sister-in-law. You don’t need to worry."
After a brief pause, Su Li smiled. "Alright. That’s actually the same message I wanted you to pass along to Wu Sheng."
Wa Wa Lian blinked. "Are you talking about the case?"
Su Li gave a silent nod.
Wa Wa Lian insisted on escorting Su Li back to the hospital.
Li Hongqin, who was with them, couldn’t stop praising him. "What a handsome and polite young man. Very nice, very nice."
The praise made Wa Wa Lian blush beet red. He dropped Su Li off and then quickly scurried away.
Watching Wa Wa Lian flee in embarrassment, Li Hongqin let out a rare, hearty laugh. "Oh my god, that’s hilarious! Look how red he got..."
Just as Li Hongqin was in the middle of her laughing fit, there was a polite knock on the door.
"Who is it? Come in," Li Hongqin called out, still smiling.
The door opened, and the crisp sound of high heels on the floor preceded a beautiful woman who stepped inside. She had long, flowing hair and wore a white dress.
She had the air of a well-bred lady from a wealthy family—poised and intelligent. She had an oval face, large eyes with distinct double eyelids, and a charming fullness beneath them.
She was of average height, but her well-proportioned figure made her seem taller. The high heels she wore only served to make her appear even more slender and graceful.
"Are you Su Li?"
Her eyes swept across the room before quickly locking onto Su Li’s face.
"Hello. My name is Bai Xinyue."
She gave a slight nod by way of greeting, then took a few steps forward and gestured to the bespectacled man behind her.
"This is Yan Zhong. He’s the lawyer I’ve found for you."
She stopped a few meters away, a faint smile on her face. "I heard that the person who harmed you has turned himself in, so I took the liberty of finding you a lawyer. He will file a lawsuit on your behalf and make sure the suspect is sent to prison."
Seeing the stunned look on Su Li’s face, Bai Xinyue arched an eyebrow and smiled.
"You probably know who I am, or at least, you’ve heard my name before, haven’t you?"
Su Li said nothing, but Bai Xinyue could read the answer in her expression.
"My apologies. That’s just how I am. I don’t like to beat around the bush; I prefer to be direct."
She smiled. "Aunt Ye has probably mentioned me to you, and she’s probably also told you my reasons for doing this. To save you any embarrassment, I won’t repeat them."
"In any case, I am deeply sympathetic to your plight, and I hope we can bring the perpetrator to justice as soon as possible."
She gestured toward the lawyer again. "Lawyer Yan is someone our family works with frequently. I won’t say he’s the absolute best, but he’s better than any lawyer you could find on your own. Whatever you’re thinking, whatever compensation you require, you can tell him. As long as it isn’t too far outside a reasonable range, he will make it happen for you."
As she spoke, she glanced pointedly at Little Tang Mo. "Consider it a form of compensation for you. You don’t need to be so formal about it."
From the moment she walked in, Bai Xinyue had steamrolled the conversation, not waiting for a response or caring what they thought. She simply stated her purpose as quickly as possible.
Her refined upbringing kept her tone and manner of speaking very controlled. Someone who didn’t know better might have actually believed she was just being direct.
In reality, however, Bai Xinyue was anything but direct. She was acting this way simply because she didn’t see Su Li as her equal.
Her visit was a show of force and a negotiation, all designed to make Su Li recognize the difficulty of her position and back down.
She hadn’t said any of this outright, but her every word and gesture made her intentions perfectly clear.
Bai Xinyue saw that Lawyer Yan had begun his self-introduction, so she glanced at her watch.
"I do apologize, Su Li, but I have other matters to attend to, so I’ll be leaving now."
She offered her apology, but she was already turning to leave before the words were even fully out of her mouth.
The moment she finished speaking, she turned to walk away.
Li Hongqin watched her go. "What is her deal?"
’How can someone be so rude? And it’s not just the rudeness. She’s just like that Ye Xilan, completely full of herself.’
"That’s just how they are," Su Li said with a soft, low chuckle.
’What else could it be? Birds of a feather flock together.’
’She comes in, directs and stars in her own little play, and then leaves the moment the curtain falls.’
’It’s not that there’s something wrong with them; it’s just what they’re used to.’
In her past life, Su Li had met many people like that. A lot of company bosses had the same habit, more or less.
They’d walk into an office, give orders out of the blue, and then leave as soon as they were done speaking.
Of course, Ye Xilan and Bai Xinyue hadn’t developed this habit from being bosses. They acted this way simply because they looked down on Su Li.
They couldn’t be bothered to actually have a conversation with her.
Su Li chuckled softly, ignoring the lawyer who was still talking. She raised her voice, calling out to Bai Xinyue, who had already reached the doorway.
"Miss Bai, please wait a moment."
Hearing Su Li’s voice, Bai Xinyue took a short, sharp breath, as if steeling her patience, then turned back with a smile plastered on her face.
"Yes? What is it?"
Su Li gestured toward Lawyer Yan. "Miss Bai, you forgot something. I don’t need him."
The lawyer stopped talking mid-sentence. Bai Xinyue arched an eyebrow in surprise. "You don’t need him?"
"That’s right. Since I never requested your help in the first place, I can’t very well thank you for it. Please take him with you when you leave. I don’t need him."
The smile vanished from Bai Xinyue’s lips. She narrowed her eyes, her gaze turning sharp.
"Are you sure?"
She finally gave Su Li a proper look. The three words came out slowly, each one laden with meaning.
A corner of Su Li’s mouth twitched. "I’m positive."
"Whatever negotiations or deals you have with the Yang Family are none of my business. I don’t need your help, and I don’t need your lawyer. I’ll find one myself."
As she spoke, Su Li slowly lifted her head, her gaze meeting Bai Xinyue’s and holding it.
Su Li’s left eyelid twitched twice, a stinging sensation following. It was a conditioned reflex.
’After all these years,’ Su Li thought, ’I never expected to see Bai Xinyue again.’
When Ye Xilan had mentioned the Bai Family from the north side of the city, Su Li hadn’t thought much of it. Not until Bai Xinyue appeared before her.
Bai Xinyue... oh, Bai Xinyue...
The cornea that Zhao Wenming had stolen from her in her past life... had ended up in Bai Xinyue’s eyes.
