Chapter 427: Was That Music?
Putting away the greatsword in her hands, Eula crouched down to inspect the bard lying beneath the tree.
"All the monsters and animals nearby have lost consciousness. Even the hilichurls in the distance are the same."
Amber jumped down from the tree, pushing her goggles back onto her forehead as she spoke.
Her appearance here was actually a coincidence.
Because of the dragon crisis, hilichurl tribes had been moving closer and closer to Mondstadt. Amber happened to be scouting the area when she heard the commotion and rushed over.
Eula’s situation was similar.
She had noticed that one of her elders had been making frequent trips to Springvale, which seemed suspicious, so she had planned to investigate.
But the noise from this direction caused her to change her plans.
"Leave part of the team to secure the Statue of the Seven. The rest should search the surrounding area for clues and see if there are any other injured people. Amber... come with me. We’ll take this victim back."
Judging from the scene, the source of the noise had been this giant tree.
And as the only living creature beneath it, this bard undoubtedly knew something they didn’t, which was why Eula wanted Amber to help protect him.
"Oh, okay."
Although Eula was the captain of the Reconnaissance Company, she technically had no authority to command Amber. But as Eula’s good friend, Amber would have helped even without being asked.
With Amber’s assistance, Eula carried the unconscious bard on her back and hurried toward Mondstadt.
Meanwhile, Mondstadt had already entered a state of high alert.
The residents had all taken shelter, leaving only the somewhat uneasy Knights of Favonius patrolling the streets.
Although no dragon could be seen in the sky, the strange noise had sounded remarkably similar to the dragon roars recently heard from Dragonspine.
They couldn’t afford to take any chances.
An eagle slowly descended and landed steadily on Diluc’s arm.
Standing in the shadow of the city walls, Diluc removed a note tied to the bird’s leg. As he read its contents, his brow gradually furrowed.
At first, he hadn’t believed the noise was from a dragon. Having personally encountered both Dvalin and Ursa before, he knew very well what a real dragon’s roar sounded like.
But the message brought back by the eagle forced him to take the so-called dragon roar seriously.
Because Dvalin had left Stormterror’s Lair.
Although Diluc had returned to Mondstadt, he had never stopped monitoring Dvalin’s condition.
He had stationed trusted subordinates there with orders to notify him immediately if Dvalin ever left his nest.
If Dvalin had departed despite not yet fully recovering from his injuries, then something was definitely wrong with the "dragon roar" coming from the direction of Windrise.
Could it be that the skeleton atop Dragonspine was about to come back to life as well?
What a troublesome time.
Just as he was considering how to deal with these developments, shouting from the city gate caught his attention.
Avoiding the Knights, Diluc quietly climbed the city wall and looked outside.
What he saw was the Lawrence Clan’s Spindrift Knight and the Outrider returning from Windrise with someone in tow.
And that person...
Diluc: "???"
Why was it that bard again? And why had he passed out again?
After those two questions, the image that appeared in Diluc’s mind was the Ausbilder annoyingly smug grin.
It wasn’t surprising that the Ausbilder was his first suspect.
It wasn’t that Diluc blamed every bad thing on him, rather, nearly every time this bard had ended up unconscious so far, the Ausbilder had somehow been involved.
It was hard not to suspect him.
Besides, the Knights had just reported earlier that the long-missing Ausbilder had reappeared at the camp near the mountain’s base and had even drugged an alchemist unconscious.
Then something happened at Windrise.
There was absolutely no way the Ausbilder could clear himself of suspicion.
The person assigned to receive Eula and Amber at the gate was Kaeya.
The affairs on the city wall had almost entirely been handed over to Kaeya by Jean.
As for Jean...
She had more important matters to attend to, such as calming the frightened civilians in the shelters.
With the image she carried, there wasn’t a person in Mondstadt who didn’t trust her—from eighty-year-old elders to eight-month-old infants.
As for Kaeya...
Perhaps only a bunch of old men and drunkards would wholeheartedly support him.
"What happened?"
When Kaeya arrived and saw Venti being carried on Eula’s back, he wore an expression much like Diluc’s.
"Found him at Windrise. He appears to be a victim."
After another knight helped take Venti from her, Eula explained the situation to Kaeya in detail.
"So you’re saying none of you actually saw this so-called dragon?"
Before Kaeya could respond, Diluc suddenly interjected from the side.
If it had been an ordinary knight, Diluc would never have spoken up so casually.
After all, he was considered one of the Knights of Favonius’ "troublesome elements."
But Kaeya was different. Both Kaeya and Jean understood that Diluc’s dissatisfaction with the Knights stemmed from the events of several years ago and from the organization’s gradual decline.
Eula, however, didn’t know any of this. To her, Diluc was merely an ordinary citizen of Mondstadt. Even if he owned Dawn Winery, he had no right to involve himself in such matters.
Chasing after the Darknight Hero together had been a private matter.
"It’s fine. Let him hear it. Master Diluc’s network of connections is a great asset to us as well."
Using his usual silver tongue to smooth things over, Kaeya gave his approval.
With that permission, Amber and Eula recounted everything they had witnessed from their respective perspectives.
As they spoke, Diluc’s expression grew increasingly strange.
"Mu... sic?"
It wasn’t just Diluc—even Kaeya looked surprised.
Because from Mondstadt, the sound had resembled nothing so much as two pieces of tree bark being rubbed together as hard as possible.
Compared to that noise, even the clinking of glasses and the snoring of drunkards in Angel’s Share sounded pleasant.
"I know it sounds unbelievable, but based on my understanding of music theory, it... really did somewhat resemble music."
As a descendant of the Lawrence Clan, Eula had received an exceptionally refined education, including but not limited to cooking, painting, the arts, and music theory.
One could say that her upbringing was every bit as sophisticated as that of Inazuma’s Shirasagi Himegimi.
Although many traditions had been simplified repeatedly as her family declined, Eula had inherited and preserved most of them.
One example was the Ritual Dance.
To master the Ritual Dance, one had to possess a solid understanding of music theory—at the very least, the rhythm had to be correct. Otherwise, endless reprimands would follow.
In short, as absurd as it sounded, Eula had no choice but to admit that the so-called dragon’s roar coming from Windrise truly seemed to be connected to music.
