Chapter 428: Barbatos, You Set Me Up
The scene shifts back to Bai Luo.
After sensing that the Knights of Favonius were approaching, Bai Luo left Windrise. However, instead of returning to Mondstadt City, he followed the road leading out of Mondstadt and arrived at the Whispering Woods.
Finding a comfortable spot, he sat down on a withered tree trunk, took out the bottle of aged wine, and began flipping through the notebook he had borrowed from Sucrose.
Although the notebook’s overall appearance was rather plain, it was obvious that its owner cherished it dearly.
Aside from the natural signs of being frequently read, there wasn’t even the slightest stain on it.
But after turning to the first page, Bai Luo’s expression gradually became strange.
Given Albedo’s habits, the title page of his notebooks usually contained some sort of encouraging message. Yet the title page of this notebook... was a photograph?
It was clear that the Kamera used to take this picture was even more advanced than the one Bai Luo had collected.
Perhaps it had been modified. Despite being taken from an extremely long distance away, the image was remarkably clear.
As for the person in the photo...
Diona?
That’s right. The subject of this apparent candid shot, taken outside The Cat’s Tail, was none other than Diona angrily scolding some drunkard.
Whether it was the angle or the technique, it could only be described with a single word:
Brilliant.
Second Page
After turning past the title page, he found yet another photo of Diona, this time accompanied by written notes.
On the left side was a picture of Diona stretching, with an annotation:
"Diona seems to be far more flexible than I am. Perhaps it’s a natural talent possessed by cats? Some things simply can’t be envied. I’d really like to study the structure of her spine."
On the right side was a photo of Diona licking her hand, accompanied by another note:
"Cats have a habit of licking their paws, and Diona does the same. This seems to be part of their grooming behavior. However, frequent licking can result in the accidental ingestion of fur, increasing the risk of gastrointestinal blockage. Hmm... should I secretly mix some hairball remedy into her meals?"
By this point, Bai Luo was already feeling that something was off.
Even if this were Albedo’s alchemy notebook, there was no reason to document Diona’s daily habits in such obsessive detail.
Unless...
Ignoring the written notes, Bai Luo began flipping through the pages more quickly.
And then—
Photos of Diona feeding cats.
Photos of Diona mixing drinks.
Photos of Diona dancing.
Photos of Diona getting angry.
The notebook could practically be said to contain a complete record of every aspect of Diona’s daily life. There were even some highly private moments.
Such as sleeping, acting spoiled... and bathing.
Cough, cough. That one definitely shouldn’t be looked at.
If something like this were ever leaked, it would be a devastating blow to Diona.
For the sake of that little kitten’s mental and physical well-being, Bai Luo decided to confiscate this notebook—which he had mistakenly believed to be an alchemy journal.
And he swore before the Geo Archon that once it was in his possession, he would never let a second person see it.
Absolutely.
Thinking about it, he more or less understood what this album was all about.
If he remembered correctly, Sucrose had indeed spent a period of time tracking and observing Diona.
Perhaps she had felt that leaving the album at home would risk losing it, so she carried it with her everywhere and disguised it to look as ordinary as possible.
Ironically, it was precisely this overly obvious attempt at concealment that caused Bai Luo to pick it out.
"Whatever. There will be plenty of opportunities later. If the carrot doesn’t work, there’s always the stick. Worst case, I’ll just extort her a few more times."
Carefully putting the album away, Bai Luo picked up the wine bottle beside him.
Who knew when Barbatos had buried this bottle? Its rich aroma was so intoxicating that even Bai Luo, who wasn’t particularly fond of drinking, found himself captivated.
The fragrance was so strong that it even drew the woodland creatures of the Whispering Woods out of hiding.
They were afraid of Bai Luo and didn’t dare approach, merely watching from afar.
No matter what, the wine no longer had anything to do with Barbatos.
It belonged to Bai Luo now.
Just as he swallowed a mouthful of wine, the winds around him suddenly began to change direction.
"Wooo—"
A sound resembling a mournful whimper echoed through the air.
Countless animals fled deep into the forest, not daring to make a single noise.
"...Barbatos."
The giant dragon that had landed behind Bai Luo spoke once more in a low voice.
He still held onto one last shred of hope for the god who had once treated him as a friend.
"Dvalin, I really am not the Anemo Archon."
Turning around to face the dragon, who looked as though he were weeping, Bai Luo let out a sigh.
Although he possessed the Anemo Archon’s power, was holding the Archon’s wine, had an erhu blessed by the Archon hanging from his waist, and also loved freedom and slacking off...
Wait a second.
Holy crap, I’m actually not that different from the Anemo Archon, am I?
"Barbatos, could it be that after putting on this disguise, even your heart has turned dark?"
Blood-red tears dripped from the corners of Dvalin’s eyes, crystallizing as they fell.
At this point, it wasn’t just Dvalin’s body that was crying.
His heart was crying as well.
The people of Mondstadt regarded him as a demonic dragon, and he could dismiss that as mere ignorance.
But what about his god?
He had answered Barbatos’s call and driven away the poisonous dragon for Mondstadt. Yet now, this Anemo Archon, seemingly swallowed by darkness, didn’t even dare acknowledge his own divine identity.
"I merely borrowed the Anemo Archon’s power. As for the Archon himself... he’s probably asleep right now. How about I take you to see him? Or perhaps I could bring the sleeping Archon here to meet you?"
Although the Fatui, like the Abyss Order, had their eyes on Dvalin, Bai Luo had absolutely no intention of abducting him and taking him back for credit.
Not only did he have no desire to make an enemy of the Abyss for the time being, but if he really brought the Anemo Archon’s familiar back with him, who knew what kind of trouble would result?
And if people learned that Dvalin had mistaken him for the Anemo Archon, then Pierro—the Jester—would definitely come up with some new scheme.
For example:
Replacing Barbatos and becoming the new Anemo Archon, allowing the Fatui to completely seize control of Mondstadt.
Would Barbatos turn against Bai Luo because of that?
Please.
With that carefree personality of his, if Bai Luo could govern Mondstadt efficiently and keep everything running smoothly, Barbatos probably wouldn’t interfere at all.
He might even voluntarily hand over his Gnosis and help Bai Luo take the position.
After all, he had already offered his Gnosis to Bai Luo before.
Having seen through everything, how could Bai Luo possibly play into their hands?
After hearing Bai Luo’s explanation, Dvalin hesitated.
Because he could also sense that this young man’s personality was indeed somewhat different from Barbatos’s.
Maybe—
"Waaah—!"
A startled cry from somewhere deeper in the forest suddenly interrupted their conversation.
And it also caused the Dvalin, who had finally begun to calm down, to unleash a furious roar.
"Barbatos! You set me up!"
