Under Lin Haoyue’s command, the plant people brought out an anesthetic. This substance was purified from a naturally mutated Big-Mouthed Flower.

Unlike other Big-Mouthed Flowers that formed a shield to trap their prey, this variant secreted an anesthetic solution after swallowing an enemy, paralyzing it for slow digestion.

However, the damage it dealt during digestion was too low to meet the objective for defensive plants: quickly eliminating enemies.

So, after discovering this particular Big-Mouthed Flower, Lin Yu had it removed from the defensive line and transferred to an open area within the territory.

After testing, they discovered its anesthetic effects were quite potent. Lin Yu then arranged for people to collect and purify its anesthetic solution, just in case. Now, it was finally being put to use.

The plant people slowly increased the dosage, experimenting to find the amount needed to anesthetize the Eye Demon. Fortunately, the volunteers were all high-level, so an overdose wouldn’t cause them permanent harm. Otherwise, some volunteers might have ended up making the ultimate sacrifice.

Once the correct dosage was confirmed, a parasitized Forest Wolf was injected with the appropriate amount of anesthetic and taken by the plant people into the operating room.

Afterward, a Cactus Hero walked in.

He used control techniques learned in the Jade Sanctuary to generate minuscule cactus spines.

Then, under the direction of Lin Kong—who, due to the limited conditions, was the only one who could see the detailed nerves inside the Forest Wolf through Lin Yu’s shared vision—the Cactus Hero began to pick out the nerves transformed by the Eye Demon, bit by bit.

Time ticked by. The Cactus Hero worked diligently, but the end of the task was nowhere in sight.

Left with no other choice, Lin Kong had him focus on removing the main nerves first. As for the finer nerve endings, they were simply ripped out along with the surrounding flesh.

By the end, the once-whole Forest Wolf was a bloody mess and had to be given several more doses of anesthetic.

"Is it all out yet?" Lin Haoyue asked nervously. The Forest Wolf’s body couldn’t hold on for much longer.

"Almost, almost!" Lin Kong stared unblinking at the Forest Wolf’s body. In its mangled state, seeing if every nerve had been removed was incredibly difficult. Even with the aid of the World Tree, Lin Kong could only get a general idea. Still, he did his best to check, determined not to let the experiment fail on his watch.

"They’re gone! All gone! I can’t see any traces left." Finally, no residual nerves remained in Lin Kong’s field of vision.

"Alright, Tan Ru, heal it!" Lin Haoyue commanded hastily.

As everyone watched with bated breath, the Forest Wolf’s body began to rapidly heal under the Healing Magic cast by Tan Ru.

Through Lin Kong’s special vision, he could see new nerves beginning to grow inside the Forest Wolf.

"DAMN IT!!"

The moment the Forest Wolf’s body was fully restored, everyone around let out a collective sigh. They didn’t need a prompt from Lin Kong.

"Sigh..."

"It actually failed?!"

The Cactus Hero responsible for removing the nerves was especially crestfallen, sighing incessantly.

As it turned out, while the Forest Wolf was being healed, a new Eye Demon had grown on its back. It was now staring at the crowd outside the isolation room, its eye glinting with triumph.

Lin Kong gasped, his breath catching in his throat as he stared at the Eye Demon on the Forest Wolf’s back.

"It seems we didn’t get it all out," Lin Haoyue said. She was stunned for only a moment before realizing the cause of their failure.

The nerve endings were minuscule and numerous (the total length of nerves in a human body is typically 3 billion meters). Combined with the Cactus Hero’s own limited abilities, it was impossible to remove them completely. This meant that remnants of the Eye Demon’s nerve-mimicking tendrils had been left inside the Forest Wolf.

The Eye Demon race was bizarre in its own right. It seemed that as long as any part of it remained, it could regenerate along with its host—unless the host never grew new nerves.

Hearing Lin Haoyue’s analysis, everyone’s spirits sank even lower. For a moment, no one knew how they could possibly remove the Eye Demons from the other parasitized volunteers.

"Is death the only way to be free of these Eye Demons?"

Inside the isolation room, Lin Kong’s muttering echoed in the air.
