Chapter 243 - 148: Why Are There Wild Eye Demons?
When Lin Kong ascended to the fourth floor, he discovered the scattered skeletons were gone. In their place, lying on the ground and leaning against the walls, were desiccated husks—mummies of the Human Race.
’Are these... not completely dead?’
He focused his senses and discovered that the mummies still faintly held a trace of life. This meant they weren’t truly dead. Still, from the looks of them, they might as well be.
’Poor things.’
Lin Kong walked over to one of the mummies and touched it. Sensing the minuscule life force within, he sighed.
He then cast a Healing Magic spell on the mummy.
The life force within the mummy gradually began to recover. But before the spell’s effects could fade, both the life force and the Magical Energy flowed toward the mummy’s back and vanished.
’Huh? Why did it all flow to its back?’
Lin Kong had been using his spiritual vision the whole time, so he had naturally seen the direction the life force and the Magic had drained away.
He reached out, grabbed the mummy, and began to turn it over to see what secret was hidden on its back.
"ROAR~"
The mummy’s eyes suddenly snapped open. It gaped its shriveled mouth and lunged, trying to bite Lin Kong.
On his first solo expedition, Lin Kong was caught off guard and the mummy bit down on him. He quickly shoved it away with all his might.
"BANG~"
The mummy slammed into the nearby wall with a loud thud, and its last flicker of life was extinguished.
Lin Kong glanced at the teeth scattered across the floor, then felt his completely unharmed shoulder.
He didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, muttering to himself, "Fuck, that scared the shit out of me!!!"
’Don’t tell me these mummies are zombies?’
’Is someone conducting zombie experiments here?’
’I thought the Undead Calamity was over?’
’Are they preparing for a third phase?’
Several thoughts flashed through Lin Kong’s mind. To be sure, he ran over to the now well-and-truly dead mummy, pulled it upright, and examined it closely.
’Huh? What’s this wound?’
’Hmm... why does this scar look so familiar?’
Lin Kong discovered a huge scar on the mummy’s back. The scar tissue covered more than half of its back, and it looked incredibly familiar.
Suddenly, the scar tissue peeled back, and an eyeball emerged from within the wound.
It then shot out tentacles that wrapped around Lin Kong’s hand, preparing to use the leverage to leap onto his body.
Lin Kong reacted on pure instinct, punching it against the wall. He then drew his sword and, with a few swift slashes, diced the eyeball into pieces.
’What the fuck...’
’An Eye Demon?’
’Holy shit, a wild Eye Demon?’
’No, wait... this isn’t a wild one. It’s a parasitic Eye Demon.’
’So... someone is raising Eye Demons?’
’Who would be so bold?’
’Don’t they know that a parasitic Eye Demon will take control of its host?’
Lin Kong looked around at the other mummies and suddenly understood. They were all hosts for parasitic Eye Demons. Judging by the distribution of the bodies, the skeletons downstairs must have been the soldiers killed during the Eye Demon attack back in October.
And these ones upstairs were the domain’s subjects, used specifically as hosts to keep the Eye Demons alive.
Since the lord had led his army away from the territory, the Eye Demons trapped in this building had no source of energy. They could only absorb it from their hosts, sucking them dry one by one until they became mummies. In a few more days, the Eye Demons themselves would have completely starved to death.
If Lin Kong hadn’t arrived when he did, he would have missed seeing them by a hair’s breadth.
’Well, what a coincidence. Ever since the Eye Demon invasion ended last month, the domain has had no source of them.’
’I can put these Eye Demons to good use.’
’I’ll head back, grab some sprites and Slimes, and create some Symbiotic Eye Demons and Soul-Snatching Eye Demons.’
