Chapter 185 - 124: Sudden Outbreak of War (2)
"Percy, what are you talking about? Who’s charging...?"
Before he could finish his sentence, he felt the ground tremble. Immediately after, the entire fortress shuddered violently. Benjamin, who had just stood up, lost his footing and fell back into his chair, a look of bewilderment on his face.
Percy, who had been running toward him, stumbled and fell to the ground, still shouting, "The Undead Fortress is charging us!"
’Damn it! Why couldn’t you have just said that clearly!’
Now Benjamin understood why the fortress had suddenly shaken. ’Holy hell, they’ve already hit us!’
"AWOOOO—"
The long, warning howls of the Wanderers already echoed from outside. Benjamin’s face paled. He immediately gave the order to engage and summoned his system interface to check the fortress’s condition.
After Li Ziyu had given the order to attack, the Undead Fortress had been constantly accelerating. Benjamin had been too confident, allowing the two fortresses to get too close. This gave the Undead Fortress just enough distance to build up Speed and ram them.
He could see it clearly. The newly installed Fierce Horn had slammed into the Jackal Wolfman Fortress, piercing its defenses. It tore a massive hole, sending splinters of wood flying everywhere and locking the two fortresses together.
Down below, the Wanderers were going insane. They had indeed seen the enemy approaching, but their City Lord hadn’t ordered an attack. They never expected the enemy to just charge in and damage their fortress. This was intolerable!
’Charge!’
They threw their heads back and howled, alerting their comrades inside the fortress to the enemy’s presence. At the same time, they dropped to all fours and sprinted toward the Undead Fortress.
Atop the platform, the Undead had also gone wild. They swarmed toward the gaps in the Light Armor Shield and leaped down, cascading from the platform like a series of white waterfalls and landing with a crash.
The Undead hit the ground, but they paid it no mind. They quickly scrambled back to their feet, looked up to see the charging Wanderers, and met them with brandished claws and Weapons.
The Wanderers were the fortress’s guards. Even facing an endless horde of Undead, they didn’t show the slightest hesitation. They drew Crossbow Arrows, aimed for the Undeads’ heads, and fired.
Their aim with the crossbows was incredibly accurate. In an instant, hundreds, even thousands, of Undead skulls were pierced. Soul Fire dissipated from within, and they collapsed into piles of bone. After firing their Crossbow Arrows, the Wanderers immediately tossed their crossbows aside, drew their Daggers, and charged forward with a roar, completely fearless of death.
Two thousand Wanderers was not a small number, but against tens of thousands of Undead, they were useless—like small pebbles against a tidal wave. They tried to resist, only to be swallowed by the surf.
Li Ziyu stood atop his fortress and looked down. The figures of the Wanderers were just little black dots plunging into a white tide. They put up a brief struggle before being completely overwhelmed and annihilated. The white tide of Undead, however, remained almost unchanged as it spread toward the Jackal Wolfman Fortress.
Through his system, Benjamin saw the situation outside clearly. The Undead were spreading toward his fortress like a white flood. The Wanderers he had sent out were brave and fierce, but their deaths were meaningless; they couldn’t even slow the enemy for a moment. It was only then that he realized he had provoked a terrifying opponent.
’Percy was right. I shouldn’t have gone after the Undead. I should have stayed far away from them!’
Daylight did have an effect on the Undead, but it was nowhere near as significant as he had imagined. He had been too arrogant, actually believing that the Undead were just like the other City Lords he had defeated. His constant victories had made him let his guard down.
He couldn’t understand why the Undead would declare war and attack so suddenly. There was no rhyme or reason to it.
Trying to escape now wouldn’t be so easy. His fortress was impaled. Even if he reversed and turned to leave now, the massive ram would delay him. The delay might not be long, but it would be absolutely fatal—more than enough time for those Undead to swarm his fortress.
Besides, even if he wanted to run, would Li Ziyu let him?
’I myself know to cut down the weeds and pull up the roots; why would my opponent not?’
There was no way to retreat. The only option was to fight!
"Jackal Wolves, advance!"
"Long Spear Team, to the platforms! Fire!"
"Percy, have your Kobolds Charge as well! And release the rolling stones!"
A series of urgent commands poured from Benjamin’s mouth, and all the Jackal Wolfmen scrambled into action.
Percy cursed inwardly. ’If you had just listened to me, we wouldn’t be in all this trouble.’ Unfortunately, he and Benjamin were in the same boat now. If the fortress fell, no one would escape. He had no choice but to mobilize his own forces.
In the main square of the Jackal Wolfman Fortress stood a small mountain that took up a considerable area. At its base was a massive cave, which was where the Kobolds resided. Upon receiving Percy’s order, Kobolds swarmed out of the cave, wielding pickaxes, shovels, Hammers, and small knives.
The Undead were already approaching the Jackal Wolfman Fortress and were about to begin their ascent. Just then, a dozen hatches on the fortress suddenly opened. Long wooden planks extended to the ground, and Jackal Wolves clad in Metal Armor, wielding a Wolf Fang Club in one hand and a Shield in the other, appeared before the Undead.
"KILL—"
The lead Jackal Wolf brandished its Wolf Fang Club, held its Shield before it, and broke into a jog, charging the Undead.
The claws of the Undead scraped against the Shield, creating a piercing, grating sound, but did no damage to the metal. The Jackal Wolf raised its Wolf Fang Club and brought it down hard, directly smashing an Undead’s skull. It kept its Shield raised, pushing back three more Undead that had swarmed it.
Thousands of Jackal Wolves formed a metal wall before the white tide, clashing with the Undead in a brutal melee.
