Chapter 289
Instantly, quite a few people turned to look.
The corners of Adam’s mouth curled up, he had guessed early on that this scrawny man would be this shameless.
"You’re speaking nonsense! It was clearly you who stole our money!" Cecilia immediately retorted.
"Who saw me steal it? It was obviously him who stole my money, and now he wants to deny it!" The scrawny man yelled with a scoundrel’s face.
"Fellow townsfolk, you must believe me! We live and work in peace here in the Silver Willow capital. Is there any need to steal from two outsiders
"Although my family is poor, I have always had ambition, I worked hard to save this money over half a year to treat my sick mother!"
"My poor mother! She’s been bedridden and hasn’t been able to walk for almost a year!"
"The doctor said that if we don’t treat her urgently, she won’t make it!"
The scrawny man instantly burst into dramatic tears, snot and sorrow streaming down his face, his acting was practically invincible.
The surrounding passersby were instantly swayed, coupled with the fact that Adam and Cecilia were visibly outsiders, the crowd immediately began to speak up.
"What a filial child, and what a pitiful mother! The Heavens are truly unfair!"
"Let him go right now! You two thieves, you should be dragged to the magistrate’s office!"
"Hurry up and let him go back to treat his mother! If you delay him, you are committing murder!"
"What a shameless pair, stealing life-saving money like this!"
One sentence after another, the crowd hurled self-righteous accusations at Adam and Cecilia.
"You people... do you even understand the situation?!" Cecilia was instantly choked with anger. When had she ever encountered something like this, where black and white could be inverted so easily?
Just because the other party cried a bit, acted pitiful, and threw out baseless claims, he could win the sympathy and support of so many people? Where was the logic in that?
Adam, however, was extremely calm, as a veteran internet surfer in his previous life, this was just a minor spectacle.
"Alright, Cecilia, don’t lower yourself to their level." Adam smiled faintly, reaching out to wrap a comforting arm around her shoulder.
"But Young Master, he clearly stole our money..." Cecilia said, feeling incredibly wronged.
"I know, but with people like this, reasoning is useless." Adam shook his head indifferently.
"Then what should we do?" Cecilia frowned as she looked at the growing, hostile crowd.
"Teach him a lesson, of course, explaining things to these people is a waste of breath, broken bones are the only hard truth!"
Adam smiled faintly, with a swift backhand motion, he grabbed the scrawny man’s other arm and violently twisted it.
A sickening sound echoed as the scrawny man’s arm was snapped cleanly in half.
"Ahhh!!!"
The scrawny man shrieked miserably, he never expected this seemingly weak and scholarly young man to be so violently brutal as to snap his arm without warning.
The surrounding passersby who had been righteously condemning them instantly fell dead silent, completely dumbfounded.
"This is my purse, I don’t want to explain too much, see for yourselves." Seeing the scene quiet down, Adam finally spoke.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out countless identical purses, every single one was bulging to the brim.
"Do you really think I need to steal this person’s money?"
The onlookers were temporarily at a loss for words, looking at each other in dismay, they weren’t fools, they instantly realized they had been played by the scrawny man.
"But you still shouldn’t have resorted to violence, right?" A passerby, too embarrassed to back down completely, muttered a weak defense.
"According to the laws of the Silver Willow Dynasty, thieves are to have their hands severed, what wrong did I commit?" Adam countered directly.
"I..." The passerby didn’t dare say another word.
These people only had courage because they were riding the momentum of a mob, after witnessing Adam’s ruthless behavior, mustering the courage to say even one sentence was already impressive.
The passersby quickly dispersed, afraid of bringing trouble upon themselves.
Only a few bold individuals continued to watch from a distance, though they didn’t dare utter another word.
"You actually dared to lay a hand on me! I’m going to report to the authorities! I’ll make you pay!" The scrawny man clutched his broken arm, glaring at Adam with sheer venom.
"I have connections in the magistrate’s office! Even if my hand was to be broken, it should be done by the authorities, not you!"
"Report to the authorities? Sure, go ahead, let’s see who ends up paying in the end!" Adam chuckled, completely unfazed.
Seeing Adam act so fearlessly, the scrawny man felt a twinge of apprehension.
But he didn’t want to let Adam off easily. After all, his right arm was ruined.
"Fine! Just you wait! I’m going to report you right now, if you have any guts, don’t run away!" The scrawny man shot Adam a vicious glare, then turned and ran toward the magistrate’s office.
"Young Master, are you really not afraid of him reporting to the authorities?" Cecilia wasn’t actually worried, but they had come to the Silver Willow to look for someone, wouldn’t wasting time like this be a problem?
"Afraid? Why should I be afraid? He stole our things first, we were merely acting in self-defense, could it be that the laws of the Silver Willow forbid self-defense?" Adam smiled indifferently.
But he has connections in the magistrate’s office! However, Cecilia didn’t voice this thought, she believed her Young Master had his own plans.
"It’s fine, let’s head toward the magistrate’s office to save some time!"
Adam smiled faintly and began walking directly toward the authorities. Cecilia immediately followed.
The onlookers followed as well, their daily lives were usually extremely dull, so having a good show to watch was something they couldn’t ask more for.
The scrawny man quickly arrived at the magistrate’s office, but instead of taking the main entrance, he went around to the side door, there were no guards posted here, so he walked straight in.
After winding through the corridors, he arrived at a small room, laughter and chatter could be heard from inside, the scrawny man knocked cautiously on the door.
