Chapter 546 - 539: Inheritance Ancestral Land
After Li Wei and Saint Xi ventured deep into the Imperial Palace,
they discovered that Gorthe’s identity was becoming less useful.
The deeper they went, the more guards they encountered.
Not only were there guards patrolling in the open, but there were also Dark Guards hidden out of sight everywhere.
Even with Gorthe’s identity, Li Wei and Saint Xi were questioned multiple times.
Fortunately, Li Wei’s smooth answers allowed him to bluff his way through each time without exposing their identities.
However, he knew very well that if this continued, it was only a matter of time before they were exposed.
Li Wei scanned his surroundings, looking for a new target to switch identities with.
THUMP THUMP THUMP!
The sound of hurried footsteps echoed from a nearby corner.
A figure ran out from the corner. Upon seeing Li Wei, he picked up his pace and shouted, "Captain Gorthe, the Commander wants to see you."
Li Wei frowned. ’What’s going on?’
’Have I been exposed?’
Li Wei put on a stern facade and asked, "What’s the situation?"
The man was just an ordinary member of the Personal Guard. He had received Commander Collison’s order and was searching all over the Imperial Palace for Gorthe.
He didn’t know the specifics of what had happened either.
Faced with "Captain Gorthe’s" question, he could only reply, "The Commander wants you to see him, Captain. I don’t know what it’s about, but he didn’t look too happy."
Li Wei nodded and said, "I understand."
"You head back first. I’ll be right over."
Li Wei was still trying to stall.
Unexpectedly, the man didn’t listen to him at all. The Beastman Personal Guard member quickly said, "The Commander said you are to see him immediately."
Li Wei knew he was in trouble.
’This Commander must have heard something.’
’If I go see him, there’s a high chance I’ll be exposed.’
As the captain of the Personal Guard, Gorthe’s strength had already reached Tier Six.
His superior, the Commander of the Personal Guard, was bound to be even stronger than Gorthe.
Tier Six Peak, or maybe even Legendary Level.
If Li Wei went to see him, an accident was likely to happen, exposing his identity.
After thinking it over and over, Li Wei gave Saint Xi a look.
Saint Xi understood instantly and gave a slight nod.
Li Wei said, "Alright then. Lead the way."
The man, completely unguarded, said cheerfully, "Okay."
He turned to lead the way.
The next second, a large hand clamped down on his head.
Before he could even react, his consciousness faded to black, and his body vanished into thin air.
Li Wei stored the corpse in his Spatial Ring.
"This identity is useless now. We have to change again."
The sound of footsteps came from nearby. Li Wei’s eyes shifted slightly. "The guards patrolling the Imperial Palace are perfect."
By blending into a patrol, they could move throughout the Imperial Palace without anyone noticing and avoid suspicion.
Li Wei and Saint Xi hid, waiting for the guards to pass by.
The patrol guards had to check every corner of the Imperial Palace.
Naturally, that included passing through dimly lit areas.
Li Wei seized the opportunity, silently taking out the two guards at the very back of the patrol.
Then, he and Saint Xi transformed into the guards and fell in behind the squad.
No one noticed that the two guards at the back had been swapped out.
Following the patrol was a bit slow, but the advantage was that they wouldn’t be questioned.
Due to the strict rules in the Imperial Palace, guards didn’t talk while on patrol.
So, they basically didn’t have to worry about exposing their identities.
Having changed identities in a hurry, Li Wei didn’t have time to use his dream ability to obtain the guards’ memories.
Speaking would be an easy way to get exposed.
Fortunately, he didn’t need to speak at all; he just had to follow the squad silently from the back.
In the blink of an eye, the sky grew dim.
The guards, having patrolled all day, seemed ready to change shifts.
Saint Xi suddenly tugged on Li Wei’s arm.
The two communicated mentally.
"This is it. I can feel we’re closest to that thing here."
Hearing this, Li Wei paid close attention to their surroundings and memorized the location.
As they passed a gate, Li Wei glanced at the sign above it, which read "Inheritance Ancestral Land" in the Beastman Language.
The guard squad Li Wei was following could only patrol the outer walls of the Inheritance Ancestral Land; they were not qualified to enter.
After passing by the outside, the squad headed to the front gate to hand over their duties.
The night shift guards would take over the patrol from here.
Li Wei and Saint Xi took advantage of the shift change to slip away unnoticed.
When the guards changing shifts discovered the number of people was wrong, it immediately drew attention.
Two guards inexplicably missing was a very serious matter.
Soon, the entire daytime patrol squad was taken into custody.
All the guards in the Imperial Palace began searching for the two missing individuals.
In addition, there was the missing Taiguo’er and the ordinary Personal Guard members with him.
Four Beastmen had now gone missing inside the Imperial Palace.
The whereabouts of four people were unknown.
This immediately caught the attention of Collison, who was in charge of security for the Imperial Palace.
"Still no sign of Gorthe?"
"Four Beastmen have gone missing now."
"I don’t know... if you count the Beastman sent to find Gorthe, that makes five who have vanished."
"There’s definitely an enemy in the Imperial Palace."
Upon reflection, Collison immediately realized something was likely wrong with Gorthe.
The Gorthe who returned to the Imperial Palace might not have been the real one at all.
The scout he had sent out during the day to gather information had also returned.
"Commander, I went to the place where Captain Gorthe was supposed to be carrying out his mission. I found that he and his squad never went there."
"The guards at the Imperial Capital’s main gate saw Captain Gorthe’s squad leave the city. After that, no one else saw them."
