Chapter 999 – Debt Compass

Lux knew she was right.

Kaelmor was busy. Probably. The diversion Lux had planted with the Shadow Corridor rumors and ancient sovereign traces should keep him looking elsewhere. The king would be watching the wrong shadows, clashing with old names, chasing the idea of a sovereign that might not exist in the shape he feared.

But Kaelmor was not stupid.

And this place was connected to him.

They needed to move fast.

Lux forced himself upright.

Aela shifted beside him, weak but conscious, no longer part of the tree yet not strong enough to stand by herself. Ely rushed in and knelt beside her, hands glowing with healing mana. Aela looked at Ely for a long moment, then allowed the healing.

That alone felt like progress.

Lux stood with Sira’s help, though he complained with his eyes because accepting support verbally would have damaged his reputation.

Sira did not care. She held him anyway.

"Don’t even pretend."

"I wasn’t."

"You were thinking about it."

"Yes."

Gula snorted.

Yue began scanning the shrine. "Traces."

Lux nodded. "Already on it."

Despite the pain, despite the core strain, despite his regeneration still crawling through the wound in his abdomen, Lux raised his hand and pulled something from his dimensional storage.

A coin-sized black compass appeared between his fingers, its needle made from pale bone and its rim carved with tiny infernal numbers.

[Artifact: Debt Compass]

[Grade: Epic Rank Fraud Detection Relic]

[Description: A relic once owned by Lord Marquen Voss, a minor fraud lord who attempted to falsify debt records against the House of Greed. The compass detects ownership residue, false signatures, forged contracts, and deliberate trace manipulation. When inverted, it can scramble residual evidence and redirect investigators toward pre-selected false conclusions.]

Lux had caught Marquen three days before the bastard fled Hell, made him repay every coin with interest, then took the artifact as "administrative compensation."

Now, Lux flipped it upside down.

"Time to lie professionally."

Dark-gold and silver-blue light moved through the shrine in thin threads.

He erased what mattered.

Their steps.

Their aura signatures.

He did not erase everything.

That would look suspicious.

Instead, he left the kind of story Kaelmor was already afraid of.

An unknown sovereign had been here.

A power old enough to bypass wards.

Strong enough to consume the guardian and reach the first elf.

Lux copied the trace pattern he had used for Yue.

Different shape. Same implication.

A nameless sovereign.

Impossible to identify.

And this time, he added something uglier.

Consumption.

Not clean rescue.

A predator mark.

The remaining traces would suggest the first elf had been eaten by a creature that could consume sacred beings, root-memory, and oath-bound vessels.

Aela watched him in silence. "You are making them think I am dead."

Lux’s eyes remained on the work. "And eaten."

Yue nodded. "If Kaelmor believes she is dead, he stops searching immediately. If he believes a rival sovereign consumed her, he will look outward, not here. He also did the same to me."

Lux smiled faintly. "That’s the goal."

[Trace Rewrite In Progress]

[False Signature Applied: Unknown Sovereign Presence]

[Consumption Residue Simulated]

[Original Party Traces: Removed]

[Risk Of Detection: Reduced]

[Warning: User Core Strain Increasing]

Sira saw the warning over his shoulder. "Lux."

"I know."

"You always know. That’s not comforting."

He finished the final seal with a flick of his fingers. The shrine’s air shifted. To anyone searching later, the story would be clear enough to be terrifying.

The first elf had been removed.

The debt vessel was gone.

The unknown sovereign had consumed the creature inside the tree.

Lux lowered his hand.

His face had gone pale again.

Ely looked up sharply. "We need to leave now."

Lux nodded.

Aela looked at the tree where she had been trapped for centuries.

The bark had split open.

Empty now.

For a moment, her face showed something raw.

Not grief.

Nor relief.

Both, perhaps.

Then Ely reached for her hand.

Aela looked down at it.

After a pause, she took it.

Sira opened a portal and slid under his arm before he could object. "Lean."

"I’m fine."

"Lean, or I’ll tell everyone you pretended to die for emotional leverage."

Lux leaned. "Cruel woman."

"Correct."

Gula stepped through first with Lullaby, checking the other side. Yue followed after, then Ely helped Aela toward the portal. The first elf paused before entering, glancing once more at the revived springlight in the distance.

Lux caught her gaze and smiled.

Aela looked at him.

Still uncertain.

Then she stepped through.

The world folded.

For Aela, it was not like walking through a door.

It was like stepping out of one era and falling directly into another.

One moment, she could still feel the Hollow Mountain behind her. The roots. The spring. The ash that had become memory. The tree where her body had been sealed for so long that she had forgotten what skin felt like without bark pressed against it.

The next moment?

Soft carpet beneath her bare feet.

Warm golden lights above.

Walls too clean.

Glass windows too wide.

Furniture shaped with impossible smoothness.

The air smelled of polished wood, fresh flowers, coffee, food, and too many living presences woven into one strange household.

A mansion.

Aela went still.

Her fingers tightened around Ely’s hand.

Everything looked foreign.

If it had been a battlefield, she would know how to stand. If it had been a shrine, she would know how to kneel. If it had been a forest, she would know how to listen.

But this?

This place had stairs that curved like water, light crystals that were not crystals, paintings framed in gold, and some black rectangular object on a side table that stared at her with dead reflective eyes.

She looked at it.

It did nothing.

Suspicious.

Lux stumbled through the portal last, leaning shamelessly against Sira because his legs were making very democratic arguments about collapse. Yue came beside him, one hand still near her spear. Gula stepped in with Lullaby.

The portal snapped shut behind them.
